Super chill and charming game. Even if the complexity of the rest of the series intimidates you, I can’t recommend playing this one enough at the very least.

This game is so dated and such a relic of its time. Not just its level design, its graphics, or its gameplay design, all of which induce a level of nostalgia for even those who have no experience with the franchise. But even its very existence, a faithful recreation of Disney's most classic and popular worlds and characters as the backdrop for a final fantasy action game, is truly a relic of its time. The combat can be repetitive and the control scheme can be frustrating, but exploring and interacting with these environments is continually a delight, and I finally understand the reverance that this series has garnered among an entire generation of gamers.

Same as the base version just with the extra goodies.

Great story, great soundtrack, only problem was the gummi ship and some worlds were sorta boring (atlantica, neverland) other than that a great game

I went into Kingdom Hearts wanting with all my heart and soul to hate it. Already a big hater of everything Disney, Soras googoo gaagaa punk lookin ass was doing nothing to inspire confidence about the games original elements. But damn i was absolutely blown away. The original story was actually very enjoyable, especially in later games, and the gameplay is some of the best the character action genre has to offer. The individual worlds can get a little lame just being remakes of the disney movies with Sora Goofy and Donald inserted in. One of the best final bosses in video games imo.

didn't really click with me tbh

I loved every second of it. The world variety was so good, every world had something unique to it. Like for example in Halloween Town that your outfit changes was so cool. There is so much you can do in this game, it‘s crazy thinking that this game is over 20 years old now. I think the combat system is very solid, it is just the clunky camera that‘s annoying sometimes. I had little to no problems with it tho. To the story and plot, I mean of course it can be kinda corny sometimes with all that power of friendship stuff but it’s still a game made for kids. I‘m cool with it tho. I think every age group can play this. There are still so many plotholes so I really am hyped to play all the other games, I just dont know where to continue hahaha. All in all I‘m surprised that I like this game that much, it really made me feel like a little kid again going to all the diffrent Disney Worlds. Looking forward to the other games ;)

For years I put this series off because it just seemed to “kiddy.” I mean a kid with a key sword with a party of Donald and Goofy go through the worlds of Little Mermaid and z Winnie the Pooh while mixing it with very dumbed down Final Fantasy characters. Not something teen me wanted anything to do with. 34 year old me though said sure it has to have a rabid fan base for a reason, right.

The first hour or so my teen self was right. The characters have corny lines and there are way too many 3rd grade level scenes. However once you first leave traverse town and head to the world of Alice and Wonderland the game flips and clicked for me. It becomes a highly enjoyable action RPG with simple but solid and enjoyable battles, wonderful Disney characters and worlds to explore, and some of the greatest music video games have been blessed with. The gameplay is as I said simple but fun. It is never overly complicated as you have a regular attack with a few combos and 4 elemental spells, a heal spell, a defense spell, and a stop spell. It easy enough for anyone to pick up but designed well enough for it to be entertaining for anyone as well.

The worlds of Disney while fairly small are vibrant and fun to explore. It is fun interacting with all of the lovable Disney characters as well as the stripped down version of Final Fantasy characters. The story was surprisingly very good. I have always heard how confusing the story gets and was happy to see it doesn’t get overly confusing right off the bat in the first game. I was also glad to see it was a story was it’s own thing based around Sora Riku and Kairi involving the Disney and Final Fantasy characters and not just some kind of Disney or Final Fantasy regurgitated story.

The star of the first game for me was the music. Every single track oozes with charm and creativity matching the story, world, character, or moment. This game will definitely be added to my list of favorite OSTs list.

I know most people that wanted to play this game already has but if you haven’t and you are a fan of Disney or action RPGs stop what your doing and play this classic wonderful gem.

As a mostly turnbased kind of RPGplayer, i didn't expect to get pulled in this one like i did. I have to admit that i almost didn't though.

That start felt extremely slow phased. The First island was the biggest drag, and Traverse Town took a bit getting used to as well. I don't know why they chose a really confusing world as the first Disney world to visit (Wonderland). I actually had to use a guide at some point to see what to do, that didn't really leave the best first impression). The next world (Tarzan's Jungle) had even worse platforming jumps (i had to repeatedly swim back and redo the jump on the hippo's)that put me off as well. It was after those worlds that the game really started to click for me. After that i was hooked!

the combat is easy to get but quite deep, with direct combat abilities, ff magic spells, and Disney summons. Every completed world gives a lot of rewards. You get a lot of new things to play around with constantly, and that makes it addicting. There are a lot of optional bosses stronger than the end boss, so people who like difficult challenges are really treated well.

The gummyship parts were a good idea on paper and there is lore behind their existence, but more an yawnworthy timewaster than anything else in practice. You don't need to interact with the gummiship improving garage at all to get by, which says plenty about the difficulty. It's not that intruding because you can warp to worlds you've been to quite early in the game, and you can speed up your ship to get by faster. In my opinion it would be better if it was just small cutscenes of the ship going from and to planets, and keep it at that.

Soundtrack is legendary (love that piano!), and the game looks great for it's time, i even dare to say one of the best of it's time.

At this time, Kingdom Hearts seems to be a simple shounen anime like story with Disney fan service, and just enough world building to keep you engaged. It came out when the Disney renaissance was still in full swing (not the current Disney), so seeing all the different Disney villains work together would feel very special. The marvel shared universe before that was a thing, that seems the idea the storyboard was going. Some worlds are a bit to much just parts of their respective movies with a bit of heartless in it, but there is also a certain charm in it. You sure get extra if you somewhat enjoyed the older Disney properties (and there is a lot to love about some of those!). The FF characters (from 7 and 8) didn't feel that impactful in the story in any way, and only there for the 'I know him/her!" effect. But i can imagine how amazing it would be to beat up Sephiroth (with his famous music and all) before smash ultimate was a thing. He really gives a hard fight as well.

It has the passion and heart(get it?) square still had with their RPG's at that time, with that passion really reminiscent of games like FF 7-10. I was surprised just how many little systems and sidethings there were that probably took a lot of time to make and a lot of player's wouldn't even engage with (the synthesizing especially!). Even a whole Winnie the Pooh world with just minigames, and even that had a special ability as a reward. Just to show how there are nice rewards around every corner in this game.

It's not deep in any way story or character wise, but a labor of love, and experimental in it's own way. Not everything works well, but the stuff that does is addicting. You really feel you are playing a game from an begone era of SquareEnix. I'm not surprised that this game sold so well, and started a still ongoing franchise! The only gamefranchise that tries to do something a bit more 'edgy' with the Disney brand (Epic Mickey kind of tried but not on this scale), combined with the JRPG nature makes it really one of a kind in many ways.

This was a long-awaited, playthrough and boy did it pay off handsomely. Kingdom Hearts was an thrill and some more, mixing the lovable worlds and characters from Disney, with the immersive and in-depth story telling and elements of Square Enix. While the game may have a slow start, and directions can be cryptic. pushing through, this was an amazing experience through and through, cannot wait to continue forth through the series.

Really good entry point for the series, with solid combat and progression, and fun story.
All the additional post-game content is also really good.

Aged like shit but still good, the story saved it

Got a lot right and a lot wrong.

funciona bem como uma história standalone e ainda prepara o terreno pra pro segundo jogo que já é bem mais ousado com a lore e personagens achei importante que a versão final mix melhora pontos cruciais de jogabilidade do original então a experiência de jogar é bem menos frustrante

minor spoilers from early game

it’s common to read people saying that Kingdom Hearts changed their lives; how the game is chained to their tough, good or formative moments. Sora, a fictional character, being like a friend to them in childhood and growing up with him as time passes for both. almost everyone who likes KH has something to say about it. and because of this, i write and rewrite this a few times. among all those special stories from many people, i felt like i had anything meaningful to add. why should i write something that’s so well-known within the canon of Kingdom Hearts players?

i questioned myself about having some kinda special thing to say and not just being one among the others. since yeah, i owe KH one. and when i noticed that thought of mine, i realized that for a brief moment, i lost the point of the game. Kingdom Hearts is not about surpassing other people in such an egocentric way.

Kingdom Hearts invites us to grow up with Sora. it’s a journey about growing up. Sora is the kind of person who cares more about other people than himself, and allied with that, the Disney Worlds aren’t fillers at all; instead, they’re the perfect opportunity to develop the core characters. the Wonderland World is the key moment that demonstrates not just to Donald and Goofy, but also to us, the link between the narrative themes to its progression design.

we cross through space with an awkward ship that seems to be over-complicated and more of a hindrance than anything else. yeah, this idea is half right, but i prefer to look at it from another perspective that contributes more to the game’s substance. the Gummi Ship sections are like a game within the game, a childhood game. in Destiny Islands, the game establishes a strong desire of Sora, Riku, and Kairi to adventure and discover new worlds. the manner in which they have to reach the skies is by using the Highwind, a raft, for which we have to collect items to craft it. it wouldn’t make sense for the Gummi Ship sequences not to exist, because it, which is also named Highwind, was born from their desire to travel to other worlds, it’s the same thing in essence as the raft. Kingdom hearts’ core progression is fundamentally the materialization of a kid’s creativity.

it wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t have a fully moddable cool spaceship that traverses wormholes and destroys meteors with big guns and lasers before we land in the worlds.

the principle of the game’s core is fragmentarily divided; traveling through space with the Gummi Ship or giving up their time to help people in other worlds, but there’s a particular segment that unifies both elements in a good – yes, good – way: the Deep Jungle World. while in space, before they land, once again Donald’s ideals conflict with Sora’s ones. find King Mickey or find Riku and Kairi? as a consequence of the verbal fight, the Gummi Ship accidentally falls into a maze-like jungle.

people hate this level because it’s obtuse and stressful, but that’s exactly the point of this place. they didn’t want to be there in that unfortunate situation, temporarily divided in such a hostile place. a parallel can be drawn between what happened to Sora and Riku in Destiny Islands. the game uses Deep Jungle World segment for Donald and Sora to recognize that being egocentric about their feelings and objectives would put them in different places, both physically and emotionally. Sora is far from home, getting lost is fair not just because it’s a jungle, but also a crucial part for the characters to recognize the way they acted, mature and bond their hearts.

the long-awaited dream adventure was illusory; abstract – because that’s how life works. it will not wait for us to prepare ourselves for what we think will happen. we will not have the needed time to mature, rather we’ll have to shield our souls, slash the regrets and cast the light that will guide us through the dark path. regardless of the unknown path, don’t let the future scare you at all; there are people who will need you, and you’ll have to be the Sora of their lives.

Destiny Islands is where it all begins, ends, and where all promises are made. here, a new chapter of their lives closes so that a new page can be written. Sora is walking toward an unknown, uncertain, and harder path; he will face the faceless, but this time there’s someone waiting for him to fulfill his promise, and he grew up as a person during the journey. no matter how hard things will be from now on, he is no longer the same. i’m not the same as when i started writing this. i’m fine not writing with all the affection i owe to this game; i can take the opportunity to replay the game and write down more of the things i’ve been keeping with me. i’m fine with being one, among all those special stories.

I played this game on a whim last year, i was kinda getting fed up of the 'Backloggdian Media Critic' mindset ive been getting into since it was making me not enjoy stuff i'd otherwise really like without a random critique getting in the way and i wanted a game to detox myself of that, something that was good but wasn't necessarily praised as being the top 1 media of all time, and thought to just play kingdom hearts
i was familiar with kh before, my siblings would play it and talk about it in a way that i couldn't tell if they enjoyed it or were shitting on it, and i'd boot up kh2 from time to time and try to get into anti-form in land of dragons cuz i thought it looked cool, but this was pretty much the first time i had a real playthrough
I started the game on proud cuz i heard the series was best played on the hardest difficulty, and i hated it, the combat was shit, the story progression was unclear, and i kept fucking dying to guard armor and clayton/stealth sneak.
i was just playing it so i could get to kh2 which looked way better !!
but i kept playing, and the game was still not very good but i was having more fun with it, then i kept playing, and playing.. and i was just hooked, getting more experienced with the combat and getting access to more and more tools really opened the game up and with the help of a guide i was having so much fun and found the game so charming and the game completely won me over, by the time i made it to hollow bastion i was hyped as fuck and shit.
the music, the atmosphere, the story revelations and twists, having your keyblade stolen by riku and being abandoned by donald and goofy then having to pick yoruself back up and start fighting with beast as you hold a wooden sword that deals no damage and can only cast magic. i was so enamored by the game at that point, and the riku-ansem fight was the cherry on top because, what a fucking fight. i was playing the game on the dream rod route so i barely had any physical abilities and had to rely on guarding, parrying, using leaf bracer to dodge, and learning his attack patterns, when i finally beat him i was jumping for hella joy, and the story takes a turn,
sora realizes that kairi had her heart inside him the whole game, and to release it from his body he stabs himself with the keyblade of heart, as he smiles as a callback to the first time he meets donald and goofy
and then you play as a fucking heartless sora making your way backwards through hollow bastion, the game was just not stopping the gas ! !
as i went to the end of the world (that's the name of the final world in the game) i started feeling a bit fatigued, the game started to reuse some bosses and the final enemy gauntlet was extremely tough, but i still loved this game, and when i finally finished it, seeing that final cutscene of sora and kairi transition to simple and clean playing as they let go of their hands
i finally knew, without a doubt, that Kingdom Hearts was light.

Re-Review after replaying KH1 for the first time ever since I beated KH3 and I ended up abandoning the series for a couple of years.

I'm going to give a hot take here. Kingdom Hearts 1 is the best game in the KH franchise period. Nothing beats the original, and this is why:

Kingdom Hearts past the first game dropped the ball in extremely slog and boring repetitive loop, making Disney worlds filler until you reach the climax of the game (For example, KH2 has a strong start, mid point and Endgame, but everything else is very boring)

This is not the case with KH1, I really missed Disney villains being an actual treat and being part of a big complot that brings danger to the world order, it was unique, charming and very immersive, it's a shame that after a successful first entry, they resorted to making the Disney worlds just a playable movie with very slight heartless intervention.

Not just that, the first Kingdom Hearts was full of charming easter eggs and secrets that are NOWHERE to be seen anymore. Being able to interact with the environment to unlock secrets or pathways was something I really adored of KH1. Traverse town for example, had many things hidden on it, and it kinda teaches you the usage of magic and trinity, and this is expanded to other worlds as well, which encourages revisits for secrets after unlocking new abilities.

Platforming in KH was really rewarding, and made the worlds really immersive, unfortunately, this is not a thing anymore, outside of puzzle pieces and very obvious treasure chests that you can't really miss on your first playthrough of something like KH2.

KH2 and the rest of the franchise does not encourage this, and instead delivered great combat in exchange, which for some it will be a golden deal, but for me, KH1 is just unbeatable.

Also, they really nerfed Donald and Goofy past KH1 is incredible, Donald was really strong and so was Goofy, you could feel their presence, and you would feel isolation and hardship whenever they're not present. In KH2 for example, you wouldn't really notice if they're doing anything, as you're the only one actually dealing damage (outside of limits and drive for example, but it's all sora, and nothing else)

Also, I really love the boss fights of KH1, they're very iconic and formidable, specially the super bosses of secret big heartless fights. Kurt Zisa being the perfect example of a very threatening boss, and this is never ever brought back again, since after KH1, most of the super bosses were boring humanoid bosses (Sephiroth and Terra are still fun to battle against, but I would have really enjoyed to battle a big nobody or heartless, instead of just battling random data humanoids)

KH1 may have clunky gameplay and more slower than KH2 (which I agree that the combat is really good), but to make up for it, it has a lot of charm and lots of love put into it, the worlds all feel very alive and are very interactive, it encourages you to explore them, and that's something I really hold dear of this game.

get up on the hydras back

I've been seeing a lot of Kingdom Hearts shit on the timeline lately and I gotta say, I don't know what the hell is going on.

You were magnificent kingdom hearts. You were the greatest mid I’ve ever played

(review wip)

KHFM1.5+2.5 version for PS4 (and compatible with PS5).

I don't regret starting this franchise (or so i thought) but there were definitely some oddities that, for a PS2 title, gave this title a little headache for me to get through.
I'd go for the gameplay first, which is a mix of good and bad things. The battle system is in real time, which gives you freedom to move around and bash into enemies, but the problem with it is that certain gameplay elements such as Magic has a different treatment that feels like it's VERY secondary, but the most important thing i had trouble is that the enemy patterns (especially bosses!) tend to go all wack as you get into harder worlds. I can't honestly say if combat is supposed to be done in a "toccata and fugue" way rather than simply mashing that damned X on the enemy (although there are abilities that give you the chance of counter-attacking which makes mashing just a bit easier to go with).
Now, regarding the party member AI, they can be managed through the game menu, where you give them priorities during combat, but i simply couldn't get it through considering managing their priorities is tricky, anyway they can easily just get beaten up by enemies either way.
The difficulty curve is expectable to be rapidly increasing as you go further in the game, for being a Squaresoft standard. Certain bosses cannot be beaten with just button mashing (this is very expectable for the fact that this game was aimed to Disney appassionates as well, BUT there is no lie when it comes to old school Disney games which were intentionally made hard to increase sales) so there will be definitely strategies.

Now, the plot.

I gotta tell you, Kingdom Hearts' selling point for me goes to the fact that there are many Disney properties mashed into it, but in this game there's only a mere portion of it, including cameos as well.

... still not finished.

(Played on PC, the port is bad)
Early PS2 game jank my beloved

The idea to mix the Disney Worlds with the Final Fantasy ones was brilliant, but not satisfied, the game created a whole lot of new things, characters and worlds, all in the same level of quality as the classic Disney and Square ones.

For being the first game in the franchise you'd think things would feel dated and clunky compared to the rest of the franchise. But it's actually surprisingly underrated?? Like the story is really charming, and the gameplay gets better and better the longer it goes on. Better than alot of people give it credit for.
