Better than the first game, with more characters to choose from and missions in more varied locations, but the game has a serious issue with performance. It enters "slow motion" when there are many enemies on the screen, which is ironic since this type of game focuses on having many characters on the screen. In the end, Metal Slug 2 loses its sense due to the existence of Metal Slug X.

Metal Slug is arcade gaming at its peak. Unbelievable sprite work and satisfying sound effects beg you to keep playing, while the game stomps a mud puddle right through your ass. It really doesn't get better. It's a shame it's just not feasible to make games that look like this anymore.

Oh, to be a laughing Tarma, having saved the world from fascists and aliens at the same time.

shooty arcade game with cool graphics :)

É metal slug 1 com mais coisa legal

Solid sequel, but Metal Slug X is the version to play.

Baydı amk bi daha oynamam bu seriyi. Ama iyi oyun ben 5 oyunu çok yakın zamanda oynadığım için sıkılıyorum. Onun dışında 1'in aynısı. Benim görebildiğim bir değişiklik yok.

same as the first game but now ALIENS

I played the first one not too long ago like a few weeks ago I think and I was amazed at what I was missing out. I decided to try the sequel already and it's somehow better and worse in ways I have to explain.

First to start with the positives, it's still Metal Slug. The game play is still very fun throughout the whole journey and while it's very similar, I don't mind it too much. I like the weird wtf aliens story that goes on around the near end of the game where you even team with the enemy you were fighting. This game also brought new characters and Fio is pretty cute. If you liked Metal Slug, you'll enjoy this.

There's even some new forms like being a mummy or being fat. God I really hope this game didn't influence a fetish. You can even ride a camel! A camel guys! That's pretty hype ngl. There's actually a couple of other vehicles to use but don't expect to use them much. There's also a laser gun, was that in the original? I don't remember it.

But now we have the elephant in the room, the slow down. Good lord it's soooo bad. It kind of ruins parts of the game for me when it feels like it's running in the single digits. I know the first game had framerate drops a couple of times but they were never this frequent or horrible. Also idk if I just am not observant but I swear the Metal Slug vehicle itself is barely in the game.

The presentation is nice though it does reuse a lot of stuff from the previous game but I can't blame them. Honestly I really hope the next game gets back on track with things. Wait it's basically just this again but better? Hmm maybe I'm in for a treat then!

"The important thing for games is that they allow you to lose your sense of time. The better a game is, the more it does this and makes you feel like you’ve been playing a very long time each credit. I don’t say this because short play times are best for earning income..."

- Kouji Hiroshita, one of the main developers of Contra (1987)

The punishing run and gun platforming gameplay loop that was given life with Contra (1985), the profit motive of arcade game development, and Japanese cultural depictions of the "Wild West" of post-colonial nations all combine in Metal Slug and Metal Slug 2.

Metal Slug as a franchise is something I have considered to be style over substance, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are plenty of games where the main draw is being as flashy as possible, and the team at Nazca was doing it better than anyone else at the time. It is a masterpiece of sight and sound, albeit a flawed one.

The obvious issues that come with a modern appraisal of a game released several decades ago- unfair game design meant to extract as much money as possible from arcade patrons; the game itself being unable to handle all the particle effects and slowing down to below 15 FPS; the fact that this is simply an emulator running the game rather than a real PC port- it all takes a back seat to how amazing the game's art direction is. The gameplay itself is a frustrating mess, especially within the context of an arcade machine that requires credits. In comparison to many other staples, the room for error is especially small in Metal Slug 2. There were moment in the playthrough where the two lives you are given evaporated in under 2 minutes.

Yet, I could never imagine myself giving this a wide berth were it to appear one day at the local Round One or Dave & Busters. It is the same reason so many people cherish games like Street Fighter 2 and The Simpsons: you get a memorable experience regardless of how many credits you were willing to devote to it.

The level design is solid and delivers plenty of variation across its initial 5 stages (the final missions is a glaring exception.) The soundtrack is a home run, the boss fights are enjoyable for what they are and overall it delivers some truly hilarious moments- all strengths of the genre. Perhaps we look back upon these Japanese science fiction epics with a bit too much of a rose-tinted lens, but Metal Slug 2 is one of the more solid arcade titles of the era.

Badass stuff here. Awesomely fluid animation, a good difficulty curve (until the ending), four playable characters, delightful carnage, a killer soundtrack and you can get fat in it. It would be a perfect game if it wasn't for the final mission being an endless wave of aliens and a final boss made of Nintendium.

Almost perfect. Good difficulty curve. The only thing I dislike is the final stage. Just an endless corridor of martians and a super unfair final boss.

twist rec #1

a great game from one of the greatest (if not the greatest) run and gun franchise ever made. the only issue i had with it is that it did have slowdowns which i thought was from the emulator but apparently that is accurate to the hardware. plus Metal Slug X is literally just this but they improved everything on a technical level so there isn't a huge point in playing it despite it being a good game.

I played so much Metal Slug 2&3 as a kid. Some of the greatest sprite art and animation around. HEAVY MACHINE GUN

Esse jogo é maravilhoso e melhora tudo que o primeiro fez, porem devido a versão X existir e ser uma versão superior do Metal Slug 2, acaba fazendo essa versão não tão necessária de jogar, talvez só como curiosidade.

great music, but a little more difficult than the first game. Apparently this game might run poorly depending on the hardware you play it on, so you might want to play the enhanced and optimized version, Metal Slug X, instead. X pretty much makes this game obsolete

pointless to play if X is the same game but better

basically Metal Slug 1 but with even better animations and backgrounds, more vehicles, more weapons and enemy types.

still has frame rate issues and weird difficulty spikes but nonetheless an solid follow-up.

I like the new settings and bosses of this game, that sewer part is really cool

My biggest problem is that stupid ass slowdown from the mummies, but otherwise its as good as Metal Slug 1

Metal slug 2 is an ambitious sequel

It Definitely improves over the concept of the original metal slug in theory and design, but it feels like the game was not made to run properly in the arcades

It's about as fun as the first one, with some positives and some negatives that balance it out enough for me to rate it about the same as the first game

I like that this game is the first to introduce a more crazy and bizarre ''story'', with the goofy looking aliens towards the end and the unspoken comedy, even better stages than the first game, and the visuals being absolutely beautiful, as an example using some simulated 3d animation for some moving bridges, the background for the stages looks wallpaper worthy and the variety of ambiences is great.
They also added many more little secrets than in the first game, adding some more to the replayability, which is always great, especially for arcade games like this, as not having many things you can do is what i feel like brings down a lot of other great arcade games, that are simply repeat the same thing over and over without any variety, and lastly the bosses are pretty good and have interesting mechanics

But, either due to their ambition, system limitations, or unpolished coding, the game lags a lot, sometimes enough to bring down the experience as you shoot rockets and kill your fps instead of the enemies, and this is not an emulator issue, it's also exactly the case in the arcade version of the game, it simply runs worse and it slows down significantly in some sections, it's not unplayable but it definitely takes away from the experience

A section i specifically dislike is the train section, it's unfairly difficult trying not to die in that section, the train simply pushes too hard, takes too long to destroy and there are too many enemies coming at you, so it feels like it just wants you to put another coin in sometimes

They wanted to go all out with this game's sequel and they did, freed their entire creative minds to it and i can appreciate it, i just wish it was slightly more polished, and luckily, They listened to similar complains, releasing later on Metal slug X a year later, a much less laggy and improved ''remixed'' version of Metal slug 2

In short, play metal slug X instead for the definitive experience, and only play MS2 out of the curiosity for the original game
