I somehow forgot I played this game back in 2014 which is wild considering I remembered playing more obscure games longer ago.
The game is okay. The humor is a bit hit or miss for me but I prefer the lighter tone over similar games like Anno. The framing of "funny dictator simulator" also means that the inherent totalitarianism of a city builder doesn't sting as much.
My biggest issue is that the controls are pretty bad and that you're never shown how close "in the vincinity" is for stuff
This review made me question why I review everything. Who's going to read this and then decide whether they'll play Tropico 5 based (in part) on the review?
I think the answer to that is that I mostly review for myself. Reviewing is a nice writing exercise and also I enjoy being completionist about this.

After having played Anno 1800, Tropico 5 seemed very mediocre to me. They are different games, but still, the difference in quality between the games is astounding.
In Tropico 5, I don't like how the quests reward you for basic buildings. It incentivizes you to not do anything until the right quest randomly pops up.
Also, the stats and graphs (super important part in an economic game, to know what is going on) leave a lot to be desired.
The music and setting is cool though.
Still, re-downloading Anno 1800...

Very cool game. Play as a leader from a fictional Spanic/Latin nation and rule over it. I personally like the options to customize the main character and the fun trivia about the crazy Latin leaders over the years. I just wish the tutorial could explore the game a little further. Cool game even if you are not familiar with strategy games.
My First Dictatorship is a lot of fun. Some extra textures could go a long way. It's a little annoying having the same bar over and over, and I'm not sure why you have to switch islands in campaign mode. I just bodied the British, why am I stuck in colonial times again? Oh well. Any game where you can stack the british up like sandbags is A-OK by me.
Probably the best Tropico game overall, the main campaign gives you a good taste of the potential of the new task system but without it you'll still have a fun time, especially if you decide to do strange challenge runs. the balancing act as you go from colonial times, where all you have to worry about are royalists and revolutionaries, up to modern times, where there's 5 powers to juggle around or completely ignore while turning your island into a industrial powerhouse, a tech giant, a tourism hotspot or whatever else.
