The goal for Dino Crisis in development was to make a more fast-paced style of survival horror, which the developers referred to as panic horror. Instead of scrounging bullets to take down shambling zombies, you have a good amount of options to take down dinosaurs who are much faster and stronger than you. Preparation is the key to panic horror; you need to learn how to assemble your inventory and develop backup plans for the inevitable surprise attacks. It’s a fun and fresh take on the genre, but it does feel limited by the Playstation’s hardware and the Resident Evil development heritage. The mental picture of dinosaurs chasing you as you frantically activate laser grids is one thing, but the reality of stiffly navigating hallways as the dinosaurs get stuck on corners is another. If Dino Crisis lived up to the strength of its premise, I think I would like it even more than Resident Evil, but it never got the refinement its sister series enjoyed in sequels and remakes. I can still give this game a recommendation, but it pains me how much more I feel this series could have been.

Amazingly, this holds up! Played it for the first time in 2021 and I think it's absolutely worth playing. Even if it is just Resi with Dino's, it's got enough of its own flavour to carry it. Just remember, you should probably just side with the big gruff dude when given the chance, it's probably more simple.

I can't even remember the first time I played this

The web of keycards are unfortunately a major element in the game and a major source of frustration.

FUCK Capcom, Fuck Exoprimal.

"Why don't we make resident evil but with raptors?"
"Awesome!"

"And one of these retardosauruses will take half of your inventory to kill making combat useless."
"Wait."

"And every door will now require you to find either two keycards or jump through a flaming hoop saying that you love this game."
"WAIT!"

"And the big bad boss T-Rex will die in like four shotgun shots. If you time it well, it'll never even attack."
"What the fuck..."

Although there are two good things here.
1. Regina's thighs.
2. T-Rex entry cutscene on a roof. That music piece was marvelous.

A great tank-controlled survival horror game with Dinosaurs. It's a fun game for sure. If you like Resident Evil, try this.

Dino Crisis has been on my backlog since I was a teenager. Before I even kept track of such things. I'm a lifelong Resident Evil fan. With a preference for the PSX titles. So, going over to friends and seeing the game in action was always a treat. I knew I would best the game one day. Just a matter of time... cut to 20+ years later. How does that happen?

Starting the game I found myself grinning ear to ear. The survival horror aspects are chefs kiss perfection. The dinosaurs are a threat brother. They don't play around. Unless flanked by two, I found it best to run when given the chance. But they didn't just beef up the enemies and call it a day. No, the raptors are intelligent. They will chase your ass into a hallway/room just when you think you can take a breather.

The game compensates for the increased threat with improved controls(Quick Turn!) and better gear/ammo. As a seasoned RE vet I never felt myself needing of ammo. I played smart. Not engaging with the combat system unless needed. And while I guess they can be seen as a flaw I quite enjoyed the arcade style DANGER! moments in cut scenes. Being capable of dying in cutscenes add to the pulse pounding nature of an intense game.

But here is where my complaints start to come in. I say intense game but I really only mean that for the first half. Maybe even third. The game eventually gives way to questionable design choices. Take all of the things people poke fun at Resident Evil and crank them up for the worse. The backtracking, inventory management, and puzzles I found tedious at a certain point. The inventory management not being relegated to a single magical chest is a downgrade for me. Harking back to RE Zero in this way.

And the puzzles. The word puzzles :l I get what they were going for. I thought they were fun at first. But, in my personal opinion, these word puzzles hang around for too long. Overstaying their welcome and begging for variety.

I don't have a lot to say about the story. It does the best it can with its over the top Dino subject matter. The main character is a badass. Something the adjacent RE series did well was cool women characters. Dino Crisis is no exception here. At the same time the story feels like it just sort of ends. Not a bad ending or anything. Just there.

Overall I still enjoyed my time with Dino Crisis. At the same time the parts I didn't enjoy are going to hold me back from replays. I think objectively speaking it's probably a better game than RE3. Though my nostalgia wont allow me to accept that in my heart, haha. Still, I'd be interested in know what you all have to say about the game.

Really bold choice of Capcom's to make this game mind-numbingly boring 80% of the time but that other 20% of the time almost makes it worth it. Almost.

Not a great game but a more than decent survival horror.

It has become a cliché to define it as "RE but with dinosaurs!", but it's because that's absolutely true.

Same clumsy tank controls, but yeah, in RE1 there were some moments where you were allowed to chill: zombies are slow, don't open doors, don't have more than one type of attack... Dino Crisis has focused on destroying that quietness that comes when you understand what enemies can and can't do.

Decent voice acting, but music is not great and the plot is too complex and doesn't get scary. Some puzzles are fun, but are logical games that hardly are integrated into the narrative, more than riddles. It makes sense in a way: it's a more sci-fi survival horror than RE.

It's quite hard and the ending part assembling the generator was tedious to me. Avoiding dinosaurs –some with an unpredictable respawn–, saving bullets, feeling totally overwhelmed by the situation... that was the cool part.

It has its moments.

Crazy good game.
What's next? Raptors on motorcycles?

Dino Crisis is nearly unparalleled among its contemporaries in terms of atmosphere and tension, but it’s held back a bit by its frustrating map design, low enemy/weapon variety, and uninteresting puzzles. Still, I would lose my mind if Capcom were to remake/reboot this in the RE Engine.

Dino Crisis is a game I liked a lot more when it released than I do now. I mean I love Resident Evil and dinosaurs and that's pretty much what this is and I know that's why I liked it in it's day but now doesn't hold up so great in my mind.

Pros:
Cool premise
Great survival horror feel
T-Rex stalker enemy is great
Regina is a cool lead
Multiple endings / choices

Cons:
There's only four dino's in the game. Raptor (color variants), T-Rex, Pterodactyl's sporadically and one other raptor like dino that's tankier. Thats it.
Puzzles are more work than fun and there are a lot of them.
Low Weapon variety and combat is not fun or satisfying
Lame antagonist
Too many pass codes and data disc collecting. Seriously there are some obtuse pass code solutions.
No bonus modes or unlockables

While detractors may cry "Well it's just Resident Evil with dinosaurs, innit?" that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. In fact it's a very, very good thing indeed, coming only a few years off the back of dinosaur hype care of Jurassic Park, it offered pitch perfect tension and action. In hindsight if you dip into this with a modern eye, you'll obviously spot the deficiencies, the same that all this style of game suffered, with the graphics resembling a dithered, aliased mess of colour that jerk from one dodgy camera angle to the next, but put in a more reasonable context it really is the T-Rex's bollocks.

I can't believe that I beat this game as a kid without knowing English... The passwords on the doors are giving me PTSD

Pretty good survival horror title, much better than the action focused sequel.

Capcom, get off your ass and give us a remake!

its like resident evil but they make you get two keys for every door rather than one

I played this when I was like 7 years old, and it was one of the most horrifying experiences I've ever had.
I'd absolutely love a remake!

- 16 Grenade Bullets pra Grenade Launcher
- 6 Heat Rounds, também pra mesma
- 2 Med Kits completos
- 2 Revives

Altamente recomendado.
