this side series of Land games is SMALL but overall really good and surprising how much Nintendo even still prioritized for not just porting levels here and there for a quick buck, they always look to the little brooklyn bitch with a quality check thermometer in his ass and I think its impressive how only for a glimmer and glare that thermometer cracks...
oh right we were talking about a video game, yea its good, i prefer the 2nd one but Daisy is awesome and she actually Should get a central role again, she should even show up in another Land game but at this point Im not so sure if the franchise could even stomach having another with the 3DS and 3D Land being old news.. sad!

_Mario...

Very short and fun little game that features enemies, mechanics, and even settings that one wouldn't expect from a Mario game, especially a very old one such as this one (you'll get what i mean if you play it!)
What kills it for me, though, are the (very) stiff controls and inconsistent hitboxes, which will be your biggest enemies through the whole game.
Despite that, i still think the originality and charm it has to offer shines through, definitely worth a try if you have an hour to spare.

Pros: The music, great chiptunes by Hip Tanaka here. I especially loved the credits theme, it's so joyful! The game itself is a bit slippery, but it's unique, there's not another 2D Mario like it, and the dinky sprites have a charm to them. I especially enjoyed the horizontal shooter segments with the submarine and biplane. The level archetype variety, and enemy variety along with them, was also very refreshing.
Cons: The platforming mechanics are too slippery, too heavy, and with how dinky the sprites are, it can be hard to see and distinguish everything apart.
What it means to me: I enjoyed this game, and it was short enough to where I could beat it from a young age. Nothing too impressive, but it does leave a lasting impression, one that I actually enjoy more than its more traditional sequel.

The original Super Mario Land was revolutionary for the time in portable gaming, I always thought it was cool to play a game on a screen wherever you go. The game itself is not good and doesn’t have too much going for it. I would much rather play Mario Land 2 or any other games in comparison to this one. The controls are awful and unresponsive where you can undershoot your jumps if you aren’t already running. Then it’s also kind of short and there just isn’t that much to do. The funnest part for me is the airplane levels, then I enjoy the music but not enough.
Yeah, I'll say it. I really like this game. I know it has many flaws, but this game is really close to me on an emotional level and I can't explain why. To many others, this game is a janky, failed attempt to put Mario on a handheld. But to me, it's cute, short game overflowing with personality. Also, the music. The music is amazing. The ending theme could actually make me cry depending on the day.
but dear god...those waterfalls...my eyes...

i remember mario being one of the first games I ever played on game boy, i don't know if it was this one or another because i never got past the first level so i can't quite recall anything about it. playing this now was quite fun. some of the levels are goofy, with easter island men running at the speed of light and some chinese ninjas levels? not what i expected from a mario game. it's not particularly difficult but playing with such a small and imprecise controller on my GBA made me die a few times, and man i do not miss the days of start from the beginning if you run out of lives. i got to the last level and died just before i got to the boss fight. after watching it on youtube i really don't think i'm missing out on much by leaving this one uncompleted, so fuck my need for closure.
This game is so wonky and weird, it's hard not to be charmed by it. It sets out with the incredibly ambitious task of recreating the feeling of NES mario platformers on that lovable, revolutionary, iconic shitbox that is the original Gameboy.
Unfortunately (and predictably) the developers ran into a lot of issues with hardware limitations. Mario is tiny, the controls are dodgy, the power ups are weird and underwhelming, and the game is incredibly short.
That said, I admire how they tried to work around those issues and managed to give this game a distinct aesthetic. The music, albeit simple, is full of catchy tunes. The level themes are unique and fresh. The shmup sections come completely out of left field, but they are a charming change of pace.
Trying to look at it objectively, this game isn't much to write home about (hence the score I gave it). But you could do a lot worse on the Gameboy, especially this early in the console's lifecycle. It managed to be better than, like, 90% of that console's library and deserves some credit for it.

Look, this is no masterpiece by any strech, but you gotta give it a little credit. It's (pretty much) Mario, in 1989, on Game Boy. It's playable. They managed. It's short, it's easy, it's off-model as all hell, but I was there back when this came out and I had it for my big gray brick Game Boy, and you know what, it did the trick. I mean, I was like six, so I was pretty easy to please, but whatever.
I will say, the one thing in here worthy of the Mario name is the music, which incidentally has been stuck in my head for thirty years. Also this is where I first met my true love and future wife, Princess Daisy. So.

It seems like the opinion on this game here's pretty divided. Either you'll like it or hate it. Me, I fall on the spectrum of really really liking this one. Partially due to nostalgic attachment, but also because I think there's a pretty solidly designed game here, underneath one caveat. The controls. Coming from Mario 3, or even Mario 1, Mario's physics feel a lot more basic. There's no friction, no momentum, it kinda feels like one of those amateur Mario fangames that don't even bother trying to get the feel of the physics right.
Despite that, the controls DO work, and the level design works alongside them. And that very level design is what saves this game. The collection of levels here feels just as fun to master as any other Mario game, encouraging exploration and the discovery of secrets that shower you with coins and 1-ups. As you get better at replaying the game, levels get a lot faster to run through, incorporating that speedrunning aspect that Mario 1 had. The variety of levels is strong, constantly taking you to different locales, and occasionally throwing in a little shoot'em up level here and there. The game is short and sweet, a full playthrough taking a little over 20 minutes to complete. And lastly, it goes without saying that the music is catchy as hell.
So, there's a lot going for it. but your expectations of how a Mario game usually feels might really fuck this one up for you. There are definite quirks, but I feel it's possible to quickly master them. To me, Mario Land's a tiny little gem among the Gameboy library, and I feel everybody should give it a shot at least. It's certainly no polished masterpiece, and yet, somehow, it clicked. With an open mind, maybe it'll click for you.
