Robots really sure do love sacrificing thenselves for this little cat

Difficult to make a metroidvania stand out in this day and age, but Death's Door is able to do it. Feels like there's a few small things keeping it back from a full 5, but mostly boils down to a pacing issue. A lot of the story, difficulty, and new mechanics jump up in the last ~third~ of the game. Which ends up leaving me in a spot wanting more, even though I had a great time getting to the end.

Best new game I've played since Hades. Went in thinking it'll be a casual side game, instead finished it in within 24hrs cause I couldn't stop thinking about it

I went into this game cold, and holy shit that's the way to play it. So if you're feeling like checking out this 5yo game like I was, only read the first half of this (spoiler version after) Also idk why, but I'm feeling wordy with this one.

Ok, definitely a game that if you don't like certain things, you won't enjoy. The gameplay is by no means complicated (walk and jump and grab and that's literally all you do), but that's not the point of the game. The point of the game is be immersed in a horror/sci-fi world and just vibe out. So if you don't like a narrative or atmospheric driven game, you prob won't like this. If you do, I think this is one the best games at delivering tension I've played in awhile. Movement feels good, puzzles make sense without feeling super-baby-easy, and the world building was sick. A bit tricky to justify $20 price for a ~3hr game (not much of replayability), but if its on sale or you're in the mood I'd recommend giving it a look.

~~~Spoiler version~~~~
I love how each new gameplay element is introduced. By far my favorite was the soundblast level. I didn't think a sound could be described as looming, but yeah that sound loomed. Blob mode was another solid one. I definitely was juked into thinking I failed only to find out that I joined the Cronenberg. Honestly wish I could have done a bit more destruction. Get back at the scientists and elites who were doing all this harm.
Now, the ending wasn't my favorite, and I think that's the biggest reason why it isn't higher for me. You just roll up to the beach and credits roll. I didn't feel any payoff, even though I agree with the devs not answering any of the questions about the world. I just think something small like the Blob going out into the sea or maybe the dummies walking up behind it would have felt better. Instead, I feel that nothing changed. And I don't think that fits the message of the game when you've been influencing and changing the world as you try to escape.
Ending aside, the game really did a great job with every area. Really a unique experience, and I'm glad I came back to it years later.
Took me 84 hrs and 50 min to finally marry Dorothea. I miss playing matchmaker in FE Awakening.
86% baby levels for babies that are fun, 14% war crimes.
To the person who designed The Electric Labyrinth: I hope you sit on not one, but TWO pins at two separate times in your life. Good day to you.
I just want to get a new tattoo of Tiso or Hornet or Sheo now. But I'm too busy trying to 100% this monster of a metroidvania.
I'm starting to see the shapes now in real life
It just had so much potential to be really good. But it feels and plays very rushed. I dunno, man. It could have been a contender!
I should give this a 3 to 3.5 rating. Good gameplay, eh story, not many big memorable moments.
But the extra car race missions in the adam west batmobile! In a mock tv studio! With the beach tunes! Bump that up to 4 stars, baby.
Would be higher, but there is no online multiplayer
