This review contains spoilers

Having cooled on TLOU in my most recent replay I wanted to revisit the sequel and see if my feelings changed at all. I originally rated this game a 3/5 and that was primarily due to the weak narrative.

To be clear, I don't think the story is bad because they killed Joel. I think Joel got what he deserved and I think reckoning with the consequences of the first game is super important. It's a bold choice and I'm glad they took the risk. The problem is, I'm forced to play through 10+ hours of Ellie's revenge quest before switching perspectives and the pacing of that just sucks. I don't really care about avenging Joel in the first place and systematically killing everyone involved is pretty fun gameplay wise but tiring story wise.

This could have easily been solved by switching back and forth between Abby and Ellie. It's not hard. They do it in the beginning and they telegraph the switch back to Abby. So why delay it so long? I firmly believe the story would have been way better off swapping back and forth. When you do switch back to Abby, I'm not surprised or anything (I mean, obviously since I've already played it once). It is more a feeling of relief. Abby's section is way more fun. The setpieces are better, Abby and Lev are more likeable characters than Ellie, and it only feels like it drags toward the end because Ellie's section in the beginning is so damn long.

Then, switching back to Ellie and seeing her throw away everything she has just to go after revenge again is a big no for me dog. I really don't believe Ellie would actually make that decision, and the climactic fight against Abby is one of the worst parts of the game to me. At least she does let her go in the end, but what a waste. I understand what the story is trying to do, I really do. I just don't find it compelling in the least.

If I'm shitting on the story this much then why did my rating improve? Freed from the burden of paying attention and caring about the story, the combat is even more fun. Especially against zombies. New game plus means you can ignore a lot more of the looting slowdown in each area, so I flew through Ellie's part as fast as I could to get back to Abby's part. What a ride. I love all the setpieces in the back half of the game, especially the ascent and descent of the skyscraper down to the hospital. Fighting just feels so fantastic and visceral. Hard to feel bad about killing folks when killing folks is so fun. Even the epilogue is great when I set aside the shitty narrative. The combat really kicks up a notch and it's a real highlight of gameplay until the final fight.

All in all, I prefer this game to TLOU. The first game has a rock solid, moving narrative but it doesn't do anything original. This game at least takes a ton of risks. Many of those risks don't pan out, but enough of them do. I applaud the willingness to not play it safe. Most importantly, the gameplay is fun as hell. It's still slowed way down by looting and it has all the typical Naughty Dog BS when you try to do anything other than what they intend, but overall it's a blast. Glad I revisited it.

The combat is fantastic and I enjoy the story (despite the Kingdom Hearts-esque craziness) but there are some parts of this game that are astoundingly not fun and it should have been much shorter than it was.

A marginal improvement on the 2019 version is still an excellent game.

I had COVID and I played this during that time. It was super good for that. But it takes way too long to do anything so I shelved it without finishing. I might return to it someday if I get sick again.

This is a great remaster of a pretty solid game. About 3/4 of the way through I decided I just didn't want to continue. It's fun and all but I played the original to death and that's enough.

I never played the original and I didn't want to go back to the old tank controls so I settled for this stellar remake instead. The over-the-shoulder controls and technically stunning lighting work made this a tense ride. I'm a Resident Evil vet so the puzzles were fine but I could see this being a very confusing game if it's your first RE game.

Extremely Kojima, for better or worse. This has easily the best asynchronous multiplayer I have experienced so far and I really enjoyed making deliveries, but there are some seriously un-fun parts (looking at you BTs) and it waaaaaay over-explains things at the end. Still, I'm looking forward to more strand-type games.

I loved exploring and I felt a sense of awe in a few places here that I have not felt playing a game in a long time. Unfortunately, I think this game is a bit too obtuse for me and I found the ending very frustrating--I knew exactly what I needed to do at a certain point but actually doing it all before the sun supernovas was really difficult for me.

I think this is a very good game but it started to feel like chores to me so I shelved it. I might return to it at some point when I feel like doing chores.

Bobby Buckets, my 7'2" Center for the Milwaukee Bucks, won the championship in his first season and that seemed like a good point to shelve this. The game itself is fantastic but the sheer amount of microtransactions this game pushes on you is absolutely disgusting.

There's a lot to love about this game. It looks absolutely gorgeous; in fact, I would say this is the best looking PS4 game I have played despite it not being technically the most polished. The combat is fluid and stylish. The story was also a pleasant surprise. The first few hours made me think it would be a pretty basic story but I ended up loving the main narrative. Unfortunately, this game is marred by generic open-world bloat and some seriously outdated mission design. By the end I was ready for it to be done. Still, definitely worth playing for the strong sense of style.

For some reason I keep playing these games even though they haven't been very good for a long, long time. This is probably the best one in recent years but it's not great. I should probably stop buying these games.

I like Obsidian a lot and they didn't disappoint with this one. It's worth playing for the writing alone, but the game as a whole was enjoyable and didn't overstay its welcome.

One of the best shooters I have ever played and a fantastic example of a developer supporting a game post-launch. Unfortunately, I'm not quite competitive enough to enjoy playing this game more. My heart races during each game and I don't think the old ticker can take anymore.

Skater XL on consoles is a $40 tech demo. The skateboarding itself is super impressive and feels way more dynamic and realistic than the Skate games. Setting up a line and doing something cool feels great and I'll probably continue skating every once in a while when I'm bored with other games. But part of what makes a great skateboarding game is the culture and the art of the activity, so making this a totally bare bones skating experience with absolutely nothing to do other than skate around a handful of discrete levels is pretty lame. Skateboarding isn't only about skateboarding. Hopefully they'll patch in some multiplayer so I can at least skate with a friend or two.

UPDATE: I've continued playing this game on and off since writing this log and I upped my score to a 3. The skating just feels so good and landing a sweet line is incredibly satisfying.
