I know this game sucks, but I can’t stop myself from loving it. Seeing almost every major character from across the series interact makes the mediocre gameplay worth suffering through.

Also the music… WHY DID THEY PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO THIS????

I think what makes this game work really well are the items. They add some level of strategy to the game that makes it feel like everything isn’t up to chance. Of course, a lot of it is, but the items let you increase the odds of winning by using them strategically.

I had a good time with it. It’s a short and sweet game that’s a lot of fun.

It has fantastic visuals, but it’s sadly not fun to play.

The impact of this game is unmeasurable. Before I knew what Touhou even was, I already had listened to most of this game’s music. Eventually I figured out what it was, and became interested in the series. I always wanted to try them out, which I did. I played Lunar Nights and adored it. I then played Ultimate Vitality of Imagination (A Touhou game I see literally no one talk about, but it is criminally underrated.) And now, I finally got around to playing a mainline entry, and there was no better place to start than Embodiment of a Scarlet Devil. Did it live up to all the hype? After playing it... yeah, no shit it does.

I mean, this is THE Touhou game. Almost all the characters introduced here and the music are iconic. Of course, this game is fantastic.

Touhou Embodiment of a Scarlet Devil follows Reimu Hakurei, a shrine maiden, attempting to figure out who is behind the weird mist in the air. So she travels around trying to find the culprit, who they discover is living in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. The story barely matters, if I am being honest. It’s cool that it’s there though.

The game is separated into 6 stages, 5 if you’re playing on easy. In each stage, you survive an endless barrage of bullets being shot at you by enemies and bosses. You start with 3 HP and 3 bombs you can use to clear out the screen if you’re in a situation where you’re about to get hit or want to skip past a tough section of the stage. You also have the opportunity to increase your character’s power by collecting red Power items. Power is really useful since it lets you do more damage, which in turn, means you'll spend less time on a tough attack. There are also blue point items that increase your score when they’re collected. Depending on your score, you get HP bonuses so even if you’re not aiming for a high score, you should try to get as many of them as you can. HP is a rare and limited resource and I’ll take any I can possibly get.

By holding shift, you can slow down, allowing you to pull off precise maneuvers to dodge attacks that get thrown at you. One thing I’m not a fan of is that at least for this game, you can’t see your hitbox when you’re slowing down. Your hitbox is a tiny little circle in the center of your player character. So you don’t get hurt if a bullet touches you, only if it touches the hitbox. This allows you to graze past bullets, and you get bonus points for doing it successfully. The problem is that you can’t see it, making it harder to dodge attacks. I got used to it since I had played another Touhou game before, so I had a rough idea of where the hitbox was, but it still felt odd that it was completely invisible. I understand why this game is known for not being accessible to newcomers because nothing in the game tells you about the small hitbox. So you’re kinda screwed if you didn’t know about it beforehand.

When it comes to the bosses, they’re all great. Each of them has unique attack patterns that are very exhilarating to survive against. It takes a lot of time and patience. You will die a lot, and the game’s still hard even on Normal, which is the difficulty setting I went with. So, if you plan to give this game a shot, expect to replay the same stages multiple times. I did not mind it since they were a blast to get through. With every attempt, I would do them slightly better. I felt like I was always improving, which made the grind less annoying. I will say that some attacks felt a bit unfair to dodge, although that might be because of the whole hitbox issue.

And of course, I can’t forget what Touhou is most known for: it’s music! I listened to the game’s soundtrack before I played through it. All of it is fantastic. My favorite track in the game is easily the extra stage theme. It makes grinding through that level not as bad as it could’ve been.

Overall despite the hitbox issue, I had a great time with Touhou 6! I’m excited to try out the other mainline games eventually. Highly recommend checking it out, just be prepared for a very challenging experience.

I can’t complain about more portal content, and this delivers. The puzzles strike the perfect balance of not being too hard and not being too easy to solve. I also enjoyed that a decent amount of the early puzzles have you only using one portal with the portal gun. I’m not sure how common this is in the modding community since I’m not too familiar with it, but it made these puzzles more unique for me.

The characters are also great. Emilia is easily the highlight. She has so much personality, and a lot of the bits involving her are very amusing. Hearing her cringe at her voice when she was an intern at the facility was great. My only problem is that she wasn’t in the game that much. Instead, Stirling is, and he’s also good, but he overstays his welcome. He feels like Bargain Bin Wheatley and even does a similar betrayal near the end. He has a few good lines but is still the weaker character.

The story is fine… it’s not bad, but nothing groundbreaking. In short, Stirling wants to revive Glados, so he uses you to activate “the spire,” but some unplanned mishaps send you straight to the bottom of the facility. You meet Emilia, and from there, you climb back up and attempt to stop Stirling, who now wants you dead. It sounds very similar to Portal 2’s plot, but that’s not my problem with it. The problem is the ending, or the lack of one. Once you push the button to stop the spire, the game just ends. No wrap-up, just credits and a little epilogue that only tells us that our player character is pretty much screwed. There needed to be something else because the ending as it is now is far too abrupt.

Despite some problems with its story, Portal Revolution is a great mod. Check it out if you’re craving more Portal content.

I've been addicted to this since it came out. PLEASE HELP ME!

It's surprising how high-quality this is since it was made in only a week. If you love Celeste and want to see these characters again, you should check this out. It's a lot of fun.

I wish the disco minigame had more songs.

That awful feeling you get when the game just doesn’t work on your computer.

I’m sure it’s good, but right now I literally can’t play it.

It hurts dropping this game because the story has been fantastic so far. But the combat is so monotonous and boring. I can’t force myself to play through a game I’m not enjoying even if it has a great story.

Maybe I’ll give this game another shot in the future, but for now I’m done.

Choosing a horror game as my first VR experience was a terrible idea.

I had a lot of fun with Help Wanted. The recreations of older fnaf games work about as well as they really need to. They are worse versions of the games, but the VR perspective really carries the gameplay.

The new stuff made for this game are easily the highlight. Vent Repair is my personal favorite category of minigames, and it saddens me that there are only two minigames in there.

Highly recommend checking this out, however don't use this as your first attempt at getting into VR. It's very overwhelming.

This game really benefits from being short because if it was any longer it would’ve become a chore to play. Thankfully it didn’t and its atmosphere is tense. Although it kinda fades away once you realize there is nothing that can kill you. The presumably random events in the sub fixes this somewhat, but there’s far too little of them. Overall it’s a decent little game.

It's a neat little puzzle game based on RE4's inventory system. There's not much to it, but I enjoyed it overall.

Wow this game’s combat is fun! (Besides the rock paper scissors mechanic.)

I wish there was more content because its single player content is basically nonexistent. So as much as I want to play more of it, there’s nothing to do.
