Might be the best platfomer ever made. It's either tied with Ape Escape or is better than it. Have to let the time simmer since I just beat this game (and almost 100%ed it)

Incredible levels, music, characters, story, everything. Except some chuggy framerate at parts, this is a perfect video game. A classic, an essential play. What more can I say?

For fans of living.

I have no clue if this is still the last bastion of our culture war or if it’s too woke now so I’m giving it a 5/10 to average those two possibilities out

Alot of discussion of this game as it seems to me boils down to discussing why the gameplay and plot are worse than LAD7 as well as complaining about the DLC. While the DLC is not good and pretty scummy, the actual game itself both in plot and gameplay are amazing. The hate I see thrown around too is often unwarranted and I frankly can't comprehend why people are throwing around the accusations they are. The way it feels is like you didn't even play the game for yourself you just took the popular opinion because everyone throws the same shitty complaints that don't make sense in the context of the actual game.

#1 No character Development?
Are you fucking blind? First of all the two new characters are a huge focus on their arcs and development because as far as we are concerned this might be their only game in the LAD series to tell THEIR stories, so the writers and developers wanted to make sure that they were able to get their moment, but Ichiban, and Saeko and their relationship developing was a huge part of the story. All of Saeko's drink links further expanded her story and told a small tale of how see views romance that I feel is crucial to her character and her actions taken along the course of the main story. You know what I would call that? Character development. Ichibans development as he struggles to find love as a man who spent most his life in Jail, as he grapples with the final wishes of his father are shown amazing, as he finds his conviction and accepts the mantle given to him by Kiryu as the future of the Yakuza. NOT TO MENTION THE PLOT INVOLVING KIRYU AS HE GRAPPLES WITH HIS OWN DEATH, but no character development and if I had to go over everything this would be SOO long.

#2 The villians are terrible!!!!
No they are not. I cannot help that nobody can understand that the point of Bryce is despite his plans being terrible, the years had given him a god complex which was a great antithesis to Ichi, as well as the fact that Ebina isn't just the villain with daddy issues that I see people throw around, he also represents the thousands of life's that have been directly effected and will seek vengeance against the actions of the Yakuza. Not just the actions of the Yakuza the mistakes that Kiryu made as the fourth chairman, yes his MISTAKES because despite being the protag Kiryu is not absolved of all sin. The ending scene where Kiryu asks Ebina to let them live because he finally realizes he has never been walking the path of Black or White, but a gray path that he cannot change, he can only hope to repent in his last moments is beautiful.

At this rate there is a lot more I could say but I wont. I think with those two points alone that a lot of the base criticism of this game is actual baseless drivel that isn't worth being spoke from the slop lips they come from.

It's truly astonishing how for the first 2/3 of the game Suda51 made community service work more fun than committing casual genocide

Really wanted to like this. I can forgive the graphics and shit like that but goddamn, there is no recovery time when you get knocked down. All my deaths were from getting dogpiled after getting knocked down. Was so unfun.

Still gave it 3/10 cause the music is stupid good. And I love the Fantastic Four so I love how all 4 play differently. Didn't finish the game but did 6 whole stages before running out of continues from getting dogpiled.

Might replay this in the future, it wasn't like a total abortion, just frustrating sometimes from broken gameplay.

Replayed this for the sake of nostalgia and its themes of accepting your own death resonate with me even more now because this account is dying on May 27th, 2024

One of the funnier games I've played in a while, and definitely also one of the cutest. Worth anyone's time.

Easy, short, but solid, maybe something you dig out every year or so and play through to hear the funny lines. Feel like a sequel would have advanced the gameplay a lot more.

Also fantastic music, I could let it sit on the main menu all day and not get sick of that song.

this is probably the most confused i've been about a game so far, about so many of it's aspects, what's its story tried to tell me? how I should even view it's story, it's narrative, how everything about it works?

On one hand i'm given a fantastic visual presentation and unique style that no other game ever had, really good music that just fits brilliantly in every scene. Writing that's so specific yet fascinating with how much it mirrors a real life form of speech a regular person might have with the amount of swears and slurs. And to top off this segment there's genuine peaks of stories like in the entirety of the Parade chapter.

On other i got such an uninteresting first half where I questioned if it's worth going through more of it, often wanting to drop the game for a while. placebo segments that are an absolute drag in their pacing and mindless repetition and every time I had to do them i felt discouraged to boot up the game. There's a lot of characters but it's so hard to keep track of them and remember every single one since you won't know if they will become a major part of the chapter's plot or if they'll be gone forever in the very next scene. It has plathera of moments where I could not understand a single bit of what is even happening as so much of it is presented to the player yet might mean absolutely nothing as you cannot tell if what you're seeing is meant to be a metaphor, forshadowing or just an artistic flair

I genuinely have no idea how I should view this game, this work, this art piece. It's so fascinating and confusing to the point where i'm trying to comprehend so much of it that isn't supposed to even make sense.

And just for that.

I have nothing else but tremendous respect.

This is genuinely the best way to play gen 5. It is just so much more fun, with more team building, harder fights, more events, everything. Any rom hack made with drayano is gonna be a banger and this is no exception

Drayano is a mastermind when it comes to their romhacks. This is just platinum but better in basically every way. There is just more to do and its more fun. Its that simple, and any die hard pokemon fan needs to give their hacks a try. Its sometimes hard to go back to the base games when you are spoiled by these
