Honorable mention to Link's Awakening DX, which is a rerelease of sorts and therefor uncounted, but a great game nonetheless. Pokemon Yellow also released in 98 and while I'm not hot on Gen 1 I think that's the best version of that generation (it has a surfing pikachu!!) Burning Rangers, The House of the Dead, Banjo-Kazooie, and Spryo and Dragon are also notable, and I would've loved to include Glover but I do NOT in fact love the glove.

it might be worth pointing out that north america got final fantasy tactics in january of 1998 (if you're going solely by igdb release dates (they insist upon na box art but original release dates take precedence, heh)). my list would be pretty similar, with fft and xenogears in there somewhere. hmm... might have to yoink this idea, since i've always considered it one of the best years for games, too.

@conman I actually never played Half-Life, partly due to Half-Life 2 giving me motion sickness. Grim Fandango I've played a bit of but never beat, but it's very cool and I really ought to get back to it.
