no review yet but i just played balloon park and i think i might murder someone

ok the one piece fans were right though it literally does get good 27 hours in

seriously a combination of patch 2.2 and improving my skill over the course of the last while has turned this from a game i was really mixed on to a game i can’t put down, it’s a crazy turnaround. i still can’t say my old review was wrong, though. it’s a real criticism that the experience as a beginner is so rough, and while i got stockholmed into sticking with it, i can completely understand why others would just give up after a few cups, ESPECIALLY on earlier versions. if you did, though… maybe try again? special stages are much easier to get into and much fairer, cpu rubber banding is nerfed, slopes don’t drag you down as much without rings, and the weirder challenges are finally starting to get well documented alongside the game itself making them easier to skip.

…balloon park still exists, though, so it’s not all good news. oh well.

game of the year every year

i get that it was for multiplayer support, but nintendo including this in every mario game for a while there felt like a kid really proud of their school project showing everyone in the family. best part is, it was pretty good.

for the games it compiles, it's near-definitive (mega man 8's saturn version content being the only glaring omission) but it could've done with a few more games, as even if the goal was to focus on exclusively the numbered entries, the DLCs for Mega Man 10 lack context without having played the Game Boy's Mega Man World titles, and Mega Man 9 directly references Mega Man & Bass.

a game where the bad controls and repetitive levels are the point. yeah, i don’t get why nintendo is so proud of this one

really confusing to first understand, decent arcade fun when you do

honestly a decently fun monopoly clone with a charming, unconventional cast and setup. this game is just sweet, even if you only play it for a few minutes.

either this, 4 or 7 is my favorite in the series. plus this one has tundra man so it makes me swoon

fun extra that adds onto dead estate really well, though definitely not as replayable by nature of not being a rougelike. still definitely coming back to this for an s-rank, though.

such a glow-up from the og. one of the best rhythm games out there

suffers from trying too hard to replicate mega man 2 to the point of removing the charge and slide that had become standard by this point in the series and going for a few unfair traps especially in the wily stages, however it still stands on its own merits and did wonders for reviving the dormant series and bringing it back to its heyday

the side stories are incredibly touching, emotional, and do so much justice for these characters that absolutely deserved it, but the nonsensical extra lore hamfisted into the fake OS drags the entire package down. still worth a play for any fan of the original
