Steam Next Fest February 2024 Demo Roundup

Nothing here!

Balatro IS THE NEW HOTNESS, and everyone who got that number optimizing combo go brain has to get on it right now.
Northernlionheads rejoice, for the saviour has come
There is nothing more satisfying than getting that sweet sweet multiplier combo
Play Balatro. Play it NOW
omgomgomgomg
this is the shit
The children yearn for Titanfall 3 and I am one of them
Hoverboard and grapple and grind and shoot and GIANT BOSS and holy shit is this good

3

HOLY FUCKING SHIT
Insane Style, absurdely funny, very weird in all the right ways
This game gave me ARCADE POINTS for PRAYING TO JESUS
INDIKA IS THE SHIT, CHECK OUT THE TRAILER IT GOES INSANE
I expected this to be, you know, like one of those games?
Maybe a little bit like "A little to the left"
A game about moving stuff, interacting with little objects
And it is.
And it is.
Play this.
A normal game about fishing
You know, I always loved Inscryption

anyway
Hell yeah
Polished, beautiful metroidvania that embraces a culture underrepresented in games
Incredible gameplay that has all the cool stuff already at the start and I imagine will only grow from there
Probably a lot more linear than most metroidvania, but to serve a story that really captures real, raw emotion with great voice acting to boot

7

#BLUD
Holy shit is this well animated
This game is as expressive and vibrant as the best of nineties cartoons
If you really want to kick some vampire demon ass, don't miss out on #BLUD
Very very nice and spooky survival horror game
Looking like a prerendered background but its actually all 3d render and you can turn the camera is just very cool
The monster right at the end scared the shit out of me
lets goooo
This detective game is actually funny and works well in its genre
The demo was really short, yet I laughed out loud like five times
check it out!
When I saw the trailers for Pepper Grinder, I was immediatly interested, the artstyle was vibrant, the music was great, and that grinder just beckoned me to pepper
I was unsure in what format I would be grinding however: Adventure game? Metroidvania perhaps? No. This is a classic platformer, and when I saw classic, I mean Mario 3, i mean donkey kong country.
Levels are short enough to not outstay there welcome, to allow quick gameplay sessions, but long enough to establish and explore theme and mechanics
Pepper Grinder is a platformer with a new verb: Digging. And I am all over it, just like the jump must feel right, the digging and turning feels immediatly great here too.
This is very much a soulslike, but not in the Dark Souls sense... This is a Titan Souls-like
You die in one hit.
The boss is three times your size.
Everything is moldy.
Very good, even the writing got me on board
very cool gacha game of all things
EXTREMELY well made, everything flows smooth, well paced, combat starts to get interesting
What if they made final fantasy tactics gacha and Rawiyah is best girl?
SICK SHOOTER WHERE IF YOU DONT KILL ANYONE FOR 10 SECONDS YOU FUCKING DIE
MAXIMUM CORNY ANIME AESTHETIC FOR THE CONNOISSOUR
SHIT ROCKS
Very very nice and cute topdown metroidvania about being an animal in the afterlife
Didn't one of those come out just two years ago?
Anyway check it out beautiful, fun combat, secrets, cute animals
Very fun and engaging trackmania style racer
You wanna throw that wheel around that curve just right, you know?
Also great just how easy it is to hop in and out of a level, no extras needed
you play a little bird with a backpack who goes a bajillion miles per hour
exactly my kind of game
played the demo level like five times
The fuck did I just play
Got trapped in hell paradise resort with four fuckwits and got arcade points and no money to work for these fuckers
But timeloop
Going in I thought this would be Neon White but its more like Capitalism at the End of the World with Dreamcast menus
So yeah this adventure game took like a decade to make and everything is made of real materials
Absurd that anyone is ready and willing to put this much effort into a singular project
The demo is two hours (!) long and I played the whole way through so the story and characters are at the very least pretty good
But also, this game is paced... slow. You really can and will take in these handcrafted environments whether you want to or not

19

absolutely beautiful metroidvania that doesn't hold back with total weirdout scifi
The combat was a lot of fun and already showed potential for more
Ultros is a trip, and I think I just might oblidge and go with it

20

This is the first game about being a housecat. There might have been many games about or playing as a cat, but none like this.
Copycat is a game about being adopted by an old lady, who chooses you because you look like her last cat that ran away
It's incredibly intimate in that way, there are very few characters, there is a lot of time just... being there. As a cat.

The lady is gonna die at the end isn't she?
A real surprise, really nice. Very relaxing atmosphere, smooth gameplay and progression, intriguing with some secrets, just a very nice time.
I'm not usually one for farming games but this was really fun
Really cool and hits the vibes quite well, the whole resource management component seems alright, although I expected it to be a lot more stingy and scarce with survival tools. Repairing and caring about your car is fun.
Classic Roguelike Deckbuilder but with a central mechanical twist that I don't want to spoil here
Try it, the art is lovely and the game seems to have some real nice strategies in there
Platformer with some heavy inspiration from Celeste, not that Im complaining
The unique time travel/zoom grappling/portal mechanics are really cool and fun
Had some issues with the jump though, it was hard to judge just how high or far it goes, espacially after a jump
A classic dungeon crawler thats also a typing game but its also wordle kindoff
Very funny with the cryptmaster saturday cartoon villain vibe
Also got me to play a typing game so thats gotta be something
Comedic magical girl tactical rpg
already very promising in terms of strategy combat design
Quite fun
I HODLd a failing company, got a million yen, lost it all immediatly in one horseracing bet
Hilarious game, SELL NOW i mean BUY NOW

I actually have no idea if this was part of Steam next fest lmao
Beautiful Puzzle game about obscure plants that don't exist
The manor weirdly reminded me of playing resident evil 1, although the vibes here are of course totally different
the game seems to be about unpacking botanic mystery, but is also about family history
made me want to vomit
I think it achieved what it set out to do
all space horror games end up being about alienation
funny that
Very cute and wholesome small open world/adventure game about climbing a mountain
Wasn't there one of those already?
Must be confusing things...
So I jumped into this and was really surprised how it offered a short, condensed adventure with all the unnecessary fuss removed
Everything was just so fast and to the point that I felt myself rushing through content paced smooth like butter
What I then realized that this was just one of many possible experiences you can have with this game
Voxlands looks like its an excellent developer sandbox like Roblox, Minecraft Modding, Fortnite Creative etc... And one that allows for many different types of game to be made
The visuals are also really striking for how well it runs on my computer
Very creative horror game
imagine someone put you into those non regualated definitly cia funded psychology experiments

33

Beautiful city builder with a focus on being in sync with the environment. Progress is well thought out and creates a calm atmosphere with great sounds and music.
Neat stealth game where you can turn into a living shadow!
Already shows how this can be used both as a movement as well as a stealth mechanic, its fun to lurk in the shadows
Vampire Survivors but you're really blast mining in this one
Think one of those digging games but you have a helicopter with guns
Really Satisfying, shit blows up just right

36

Really neat roguelike, the combat system has more depth and punch behind it than I thought at first
Also Klei just know what they're doing regarding making accessible, yet deeper games with a lot of hidden interactions and stuff like that
A narrative game about being a teenager in high school
Not really interesting premise, well yeah I thought that too. The game is well written however, and gets pretty creative with its mode of interaction at times
And you can probably guess there's more to it than that, and yeah you get weird deja vús from time to time
Its very highschool anime in that way, characters concerned about the simple problems in life (tests, girls, boys, prom, games) thrown against their will into something greater
I don't know if I would stick with it longer than I did but definitely well made
Very cute management game about building up a city street
The main puzzle is managing stores to fit to the taste of different customer groups, while also making the neighborhood more pretty
neato
a sniper game about killing the white cult who fucked you up
quite cool stylistically, gameplay feels a bit unpolished but satisfying
A Civilization like from Paradox. Is it good? sure. Is it the next breakthrough in the genre? no.

41

One of those narrative focused adventure games with a unique and beautiful artstyle
The environments and gimmick certainly show promise, although I don't know if the gameplay will stay interesting for several hours

42

Tactical fighting game in the fantasy wild west
The system takes some getting used to but is pretty fun
Has some light rpg elements, but everything is pretty quick and snappy
So this is a skating brawler roguelike, and while the concept is cool and the game certainly doesn't lack in style, I found it really difficult to concentrate on both combat and skating at once, espacially because I dont really play skating games
If you like skating games and think Helskate looks interesting, make sure to give it a try though
ANOTHER DECKBUILDING ROGUELITE? NO WAY! Kind of Story heavy for what it is, didn't really seem to have much to say despite all the words. Combat puzzle was pretty neat
This roguelike plays a lot like Hades, as is pretty aparant from just a second of gameplay. The Ink theme is neat but not really fleshed out. Combat is smooth and you can do some cool builds, although all abilities have way too many different effects
One of those ragdoll fighting/soccor/minigame games
Quite fun with friends probably, but purposely chaotic and not that deep
If you liked Tribes and wanted it back: Here it is!
Im very bad at this game
turn based battler where you need to kick rabbits and juggle resources, in that order
Fun enough puzzle for a short while, though I could see it getting stale if not handled correctly
Randomly generated stalker like
I like the style, nicely depressing
Way to difficult for my taste though
Yeah its like F-Zero GX kinda
Fun for a short burst
Seems well made, at least from a production value standpoint, but Homeworld just isn't my type of game I think
Can't wait for the Mandalore gaming review though
Sadly the demo just had a tutorial and multiplayer which didn't interest me at all
An alright roguelite about fighting of the thing from the thing
Quite neat how you use basically lab equipment and a fire extinguisher as weapons
Its very easy to die
Rhythym Hades set in Berlin with evil robots
I like the concept and also can appreciate the german synchro, but the enemy design just feels really punishing
Instead of telegraphing attacks they just flash once and you HAVE TO DODGE ON THE NEXT BEAT, otherwise you're toast
Every new enemy is impossible to fight untli you know its pattern
Very frustrating, espacially because I think I would have liked this otherwise
neat
im bad at building nice looking houses though
If you remember Dark and Darker, this is literaly the exact same concept. Like 1 to 1. Well, Dark and Darker got sacked because of some AI controversy, so let's see where this game made from the asset store and a little bit of spit gets!
While this kind of retroplatformer is in my wheelhouse, I just couldn't get used to this one
I don't like this "play the level optimally" format, the instant deaths were annoying and the jump felt just ok
An action roguelike where you fight using paint against paint and paintings
Fun enough, but doesn't anything special beyond its gimmick
A roguelike heavily inspired by risk of rain, with a top down view so it feels a little 'Survivors'-esque. I don't know, I didn't really get warm with this one, I like it when Roguelikes kick my ass if im not at the top of my game, and this one felt more like a stroll in the park. One of those big ones where every bush looks alike for some reason.
Another try at the roguelike soulslike combo
Does this one succeed where others have failed?
not really
Trucking games always SOUND boring to those who don't play them. Well this one IS boring, how about that?
This is a farming game that sits at the bottom of your screen
While I like the concept and artstyle, I immediatly saw myself optimizing the fun out of this game, and unable to just leave it there for a while
Maybe this is for you, if you're a little less poisoned by big numbers than me
This looked really cool, and I still like the concept, but... the platforming is bad
Like bad in that awkward doesn't work kind of right way
Too many mechanics
Sorry this didn't land for me, Stealth games should make you feel sneaky IMO
While stylistically hitting on some good notes, the gameplay here just feels lackluster
Has some good horror elements, the guy breathes in your ear constantly but ultimately too gamey to be scary
You have to run away from a screaming monster and search for and flip some levers, for me thats kind of the opposite of what I want from this kind of game
Not my thing, there are so many buttons to press and at the same time I get bored to death. I am not built for RTS games
A beat em up / Visual Novel with all hand drawn art that DOESN'T SHUT UP FOR A SECOND JUST LET ME PLAY THE GAME
WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME THE ENTIRE STORY WITH ZERO EMOTIONAL WEIGHT IN THE FIRST HALF HOUR
ALL THIS TALENT FUCKING WASTED
Another Open-World-Survival-Craft, another game I get bored in the first two seconds. There's nothing new here, and I don't like how it controls either
This zombie game is very janky and broken, adding a weird amount of detail in unnecessary areas.
It also opened a seperate window with spinning 3d models of soda cans.
So this is that hollow knight clone py the Palworld devs... lets talk about it
So Never Grave pretty much rips the character controller, combat and platforming systems, enemies, and general vibe from hollow knight
The art assets are also very... inspired so to say. A lot of newly made art that just happens to share a color pallet and general concept, shape and attached game object.
What gets me about this game is... it's not a Hollow Knight clone at all, not really.
It's a roguelike game with a general structure much more akin to Dead Cells, down to the level layouts, meta progression and run design
And I gotta say, it doesn't work. At all. All the elements of those great games are here, but completely divorced from their intent in a wider structure. The enemy design isn't fun to fight in a roguelike, the character isn't maleable enough to create "builds" so to say. All the art assets look like hollow knight, but without all the interesting bug stuff and themes
Also I feel like the developers are doing themselves a disservice by doing this, they clearly have talent. There are some cool Ideas here, but its all the original ones. The character is a living witch hat that can throw itself of its possessed weapon and also turn into a girl! The animation has some great smear frames that really make it pop. Even if the music is very hollow knight inspired, its still quite enjoyable to listen to!
But it still doesn't work despite that, not because it copies games, but because it copies them BADLY, without thought, analysis, any interest in the artistic intend behind those works. For comparison 2022's "Haiku, the Robot" https://store.steampowered.com/app/1231880/Haiku_the_Robot/ copies the Hollow Knight almost exactly, but because it copies Hollow Knights FORMULA, not its AESTHETIC. "Haiku, the Robot" plays with the game its in love with, Never Grave just wants to look like it.
An action roguelike with sanity/light mechanics similair to don't starve
Sadly I don't think the combination works in its favor
Just like Borderlands, this shooter desperatly throws Jokes at you every five seconds and just like borderlands, none of them are funny
The gameplay is fine I guess, shooter with fast movement is hard to mess up
lmao
This will NOT become another cult classic
One of those tile laying games where you get points for adjacent tiles of the same kind
didn't really catch me to be honest
The perfect dodge mechanic seemed cool, but managing a bunch of different half-telegraphed attacks that overlap and clutter the screen just doesn't feel fun
You are NOT Disco Elysium
Sorry but the writing here is incredibly boring
People don't talk like this
So this is a Extraction Shooter but only PvE, doesn't really seem to reinvent the wheel
Also ran terribly on my mid-tier rig, so could't really play it properly
LMAOOOO THERE IS A BOOB SLIDER IN THIS GAME. sadly the most entertaining part, I have played this loop a billion times already

79

This ran so terribly it almost was worse than the writing
Another Copy of Dark&Darker, I think.... I can't say cause it logged me out on trying to actually go into a game
This fucking terrible parody game comits the cardinal sin of all parodies: Not being funny
I really can't believe how uncreative, low-effort, worn out the humor is
If your joke is being generic, thats not a joke. Thats just boring
I don't think I found an actual joke through the whole time I was playing
