obligatory “this crossover would’ve been peak 15 years ago” comment

ok now thats out of the way i think this game gets alooooot more hate than it should get, some of it justified and some of it isnt. yes the story could’ve been this 50 hour long epic where the bowsers becomes a super ultra god and talks about the idea of death or whatever but i think the one we had isnt that bad either. it basically does the “bowser kidnaps peach” thing but also gives up near the end and just becomes a story about getting a book back.

the gameplay is actually very fun, probably the best in the series, i think battle cards are far more interesting than badges because they’re instant and you dont have to spend 20 turns getting one you can waste in one attack. the bros attacks are either really broken or kinda pointless.

papercraft battles while not as cool as the giant battles from BiS or Dream Team are still fun on their own. none of the fights are actively frustrating as far as i remember.

overall i think this game was a great finale to the original mario and luigis and was a great sendoff to a great series.

i’m a very new m&l fan so i have no nostalgic bias towards these games. a couple years ago i decided to finally play through them all. LOVED the original trilogy to bits but something about dream team felt… off? it felt too slow, messed with my muscle memory i’d gained over the last 3 games and it didnt feel right. I shelfed it for a year or so and grew a bitter resentment towards it, saying it ruined the series and never got what made people love it…

until people got on my ass about it i decided to give it a second chance, see it through to the end to see if it was truly worth the hype. my answer? its GOOD. but i wouldnt consider it on par with the original trilogy. its a game with stellar world building with the pillos, zeekeeper and antasma. its amazingly fleshed out and i got really interested to its story. but the pillo kingdom itself feels very… bland? it uses the grass, desert, beach, jungle etc locations mario fans are used to but shakes it up in a way that doesnt really change it all THAT much. the gameplay however is where the game faulters hardest. it’s the same m&l you know but with weird motion and confusingly inconsistent input commands?? why would i use bye bye cannon when jet board is right there and does more damage? (granted this could be a nonissue because its been a while since i played the other games but idk)

the dream world itself is interesting in concept but doesnt really do much for me in terms of gameplay, its just very uninteresting puzzle solving mixed with fun luiginary effects, i like pulling on his mustache and making him sneeze, plus luigi’s character arc towards him being more confident… while done before was super nice to see :)

the main area where this game shines for me is the giant battles!!! oh my god these are soooo good, the spectacle of it all is magnificent! the bowser fight ESPECIALLY was great for someone like me who loves BiS to bits. plus the zeekeeper fight and the giant town robot were probably luigi at his coolest. while basic in gameplay the pure spectacle of it alone easily made going through the game worth it, just to see how cool it could get.

me personally, i wouldnt blame you if you skip it but if you decide to see it all the way through, you’re in for a pretty fun time with cool characters and a cool setting.

Panel de pon is honestly really fun and its neat whenever it just, pops up sometimes. it’s fun for a few hours with friends or by yourself but it does lose it’s charm after a bit.

Probably one of the best indie 3D platformers ive played. not my favorite but it definitely gets up there, however i cant shake the feeling something felt off about the game? the levels were great and the movement is phenomenal but i didnt care for any of the characters and the bosses were all incredibly underwhelming. it has the skeleton of a 10/10 but it just feels like a 7 or a 8. which isnt bad mind you but it feels like it’s ceiling could go way higher.

this game’s biggest issue is that it doesn’t really know when to end? like its the same length as every other yoshi game but it feels like a damn marathon to go through. charm and a good artstyle can only take you so far.

this is the most nothing burger game ever, literally nothing happens in this game it just. exists

the ending for this game hadnt made me feel a way i felt since specter of tourment and thats saying ALOT.

i mean i tried to like it as much as i could, i love the story and character interactions but the game could not keep me invested to save its damn life. its a game i want to love but really cant

Probably one of my favorite games ever. Easily cracks top 10 or top 20 no contest, everything about it feels so meticulously crafted to work and once you figure it out is when the game truly shines. 202%ing with both peppino and the noise was so much fun and i cant wait to do it again someday.

this game be so good when you dont got a bitch in ya ear complaining about the one song that plays once during the opening.

This game still has plenty of charm from the first Yoshi’s Island left in it while also doing it’s own thing with its own creative artstyle.

kinda funny how they use the same pre rendered graphic style as donkey kong country did on snes

A very VERY solid 2D platformer that stands toe to toe with the mario games released before and after it, while also not being perfect in every way and 100%ing it is a certified way to Go Insane. It still is overall a great time with a beautiful ending.

It basically takes both gameplay styles and tries to mesh them into this weird… best of both worlds situation where you get the selection variety of OE but the platforming of Valley and it doesnt? work? like for the most part you’ll just be using hero shot just so you can use smallfry and even then it’s so short you can just breeze by in about an hour or so.

the grizz reveal however is incredible and still is the best final boss in splatoon dont @ me.

Widely considered splatoon’s magnum opus for very valid reasons. it was a complete change up from what they did before and while it’s story leaves much to be desired especially considering the changes to the script… it still stands as the best in most fans and even my own eyes.

I think it’s both better AND worse than 1’s story mode. The levels are honestly too long? 5 minutes each for every level sounds nice at first but then it stacks and you just feel burned out by the end of it and want to move onto the other ones. BUT the greater variety of things to do makes you keep playing and try different levels! until you 1,000% it and waste all of your time.
