A smidge more polished gunplay, down to straight up GORGEOUS level design with stunning Moby Dick eldritch horror sequencing and an astounding endgame battle, matches the quality of nowadays exclusives by being completely devoted on visual splendor two decades before, more grounded for a grittier yet bombastic campaign and hordes mode is an enjoyable slaughterhouse of lead and exploded limbs this series pretty much excels at. This one takes the crown for me.

What's done better than the first Gears is done a lot better, however what's done worse is done a lot worse. Gears 2 starts off great with outstanding gameplay, pacing and encounter design and stays that way for three fourths of the game. I mean it, it's seriously fucking fantastic, but unfortunately it goes downhill after that.

It's still kinda fun because it's Gears of War but the game is seriously bogged down by sections that drag on for far too long, more boring encounters and set pieces, seriously awful driving sections and shitty glorified turret sections. You get to fly on reavers which sounds really damn fun but in the end you're just kinda sitting on it and shooting at enemies while the reaver flies itself which was boring as all hell. Then later on you get to ride a brumak and you actually get to control the badass creature this time around but it still kinda just feels like a glorified turret section. Walk forward and mindlessly shoot your enemies.

I still think that Gears 2 is a good game and you should definitely play it, especially for the fantastic first three fourths of it. This game could be one of the best games I've ever played if not for it becoming so much worse by the end.

i miss when games used to be fun

Playing this in 2022 was a mistake, and I can't believe the fan base considers original Gears games better than Coalition output. Gears 5 has many ways to force you out of cover and create interesting positioning decisions – be it explosives, rushdown melee enemies, flankers, or enemies that require flanking to kill. Here the peak encounter design is to give an enemy a high cover where your only consideration is which flank they have exposed to shoot from. Set pieces were impressive in 2008 now aren't much more than shooting galleries and some contextual actions in the environment. And oh god these games used to be brown, so, so brown. Wish I left Gears 2 as a distant memory of summer split screen past, time hasn't been kind to it

Good shooting mechanics, good story.

who the fuck at Epic saw the mako in Mass Effect and was like "ya, let's do that but worse <3" ???

---

the core of the third person shooting gameplay is fine and i still love the meatheaded camaraderie of it all but this was a massive downgrade from the first entry otherwise.

the original Gears of War was a very bland game in terms of aesthetics and color scheme but it made up for it elsewhere with the horror atmosphere and world building. this time around things took on a more action focus (which is fine) but left the horrible visual design elements.

so much of the game blends together to the point where i'd probably be unable to tell you the general ballpark of when/where a screenshot of the game took place. things picked up a bit in the last quarter or so with some particularly nice settings but it felt too late.

i didn't come to this series with many expectations beyond something that doesn't require a ton of investment and the above mentioned camaraderie but god i hope this is as low as it gets. at the very least i'd like to see some more color and no more vehicle segments if this is the shit they're gonna pull when they do them.

Great game! I remember when the original Gears of War came out and the impact it made on my friends and I at the time. Here was a game that looked different and played a bit different than anything before and it felt like a true next gen experience, at the time.

Gears of War 2 does not do a hell of a lot in terms of iteration on its predecessor. Instead it refines the ever fun gameplay of the first, steps up a bit in the writing department and offers more creative and engaging environments.

At the end of the day, Gears is like a popcorn action movie and it delivers on carnage, violence and the like and I can’t imagine it ever not being fun.

Not a bad sequel

Gears of war 2 feels like a big expansion to gears of war 1 rather than the next big step-up sequel that most games get but its still a great game that improves in some areas.

Gameplay: Pretty much exactly like Gears 1, Gears 2 is a 3rd person cover-based shooter action game with some semi horror elements. Gears 2 plays almost identically to 1 with only some variations and changes in some weapons and the way guns work. The controls, combat and Ai is all almost the exact same with a few improvements like being able to get revived by Ai when you get downed on solo, and the campaign is still 2 player co-op. You can now have chainsaw duels with enemies and in Pvp. If you are downed, you can crawl away and now can use enemies as shields. A lot of movement and handling has vastly improved, and grenades can now stick to walls. The multiplayer has a cool horde mode but from what I remember Gears 2 had very laggy server problems making multiplayer almost unplayable or at least for me and my connection was fine on other games at the time. This all might sound like a lot of changes, but it didn’t feel like 2 was massively different from Gears 1, hell even the main menu was the exact same. I will say I did run into a few glitches on my return to this game including a game breaking one where every time I try to restart the game it crashes so I basically can’t play Gears 2 at all currently. Not sure if this is a backwards compatibility problem or what. This game needs a remaster asap Microsoft!

Graphics, Voice Acting & Music: Graphically this game doesn’t take any huge leaps to look better but I would say they made the game significantly more colorful in the environments, same can be said about the voice acting its all about the same in this game, though there are some much more emotional and tense moments in this one with better character development and story threads. The music is also about the same as the first one with similar themes and ambience but nothing too crazy or memorable.

Story/ no spoilers: The story of Gears 2 follows like 6 months or so after the events of 1 and follows Marcus and his squad as they push back on the front as they fight Locus enemies and face a new threat after defeating RAAM in Gears 1. The new enemy Skorge, is a predator looking Locus with a Darth Maul double chainsaw staff, he is intimidating but not as scary as RAAM to me and his boss fights are kinda lame. The vast majority of this game is about the COG forces pushing into the Hollow which is like the underground caverns the Locus come from. I do think the story is a lot more fun and better in this game along with a lot of the level designs and overall, this was a good sequel to the first game but not a great one. There are a couple DLC chapters for this game that fit into the story as extra chapters in between missions, and I did play them some years later. They were okay but not amazing, I remember one of them you get to dress as Locus enemies to sneak into a palace and that was kinda fun but aside from that they weren’t crazy memorable and are probably only there for hardcore fans.

8/10

An improvement over the first game in every way possible, Gears of War 2 is definitely the best game in the series.

It's a ruthless game, full of violence, gore and action.
The story is pretty interesting for the most part, nothing special but it does depict the atrocities of war very well.

The gameplay is enjoyable, it's a brutal fast paced cover shooter with a good amount of creative weapons to use.

The dark atmosphere sets the tone of the game perfectly, and it can be quite scary at times. There are many different areas that you visit throughout the campaign, and each area looks unique.

Last but not least, the boss fights are jaw-dropping!
This really is an Epic game after all.

Final Rating: "Amazing" ~ 9/10.

A step up from Gears 1 in every single way. I really enjoyed it when the narrative focused on characters instead of the over-arching locust threat. All of the Dom stuff is A+ but when that arc was done, it left me wanting more. The ending is also a bit of a let down. It happens so suddenly out of nowhere.

Overall, Gears 2 is blast. It's where the mechanics, art and level design finally get a chance to shine. The narrative isn't perfect but it's a huge step up from Gears 1 which I appreciate.

Couldn't tell you if its the best Gears game. But it's gotta be up there

Nota final: THEY'RE SINKING CITIES WITH A GIANT WORM!!!/10

Gears of War 2 é ainda melhor do que eu me lembrava.

A história desse jogo é maravilhosa.

Outra coisa ótima é a recarga perfeita.

The legendary Gears2!... unfortunately this game is one step forward one step back for me.

After getting xbox360 just to play some exclusive jrpgs, I wanted to continue my gears journey also and I played on solo with hardcore difficulty and only the singleplayer portion and my thoughts will be according to that.

I have to start with the positives first. This game finally fixed the enemies not stumbling nor get stunned when you use an auto weapon and just for this reason alone this is easier than the first one and feels a little bit more fair fortunately(still some one shotting infuriating enemies exist tho). Also there are more weapons and more enemies and more boss fights and more setpieces and more... It looks good right?

Unfortunately I have some major personal issues about this game too, but just to warn you, you may not like my extremely obscure opinion.

First start with setpieces problem. This game is more on the actiony explosive setpieces this time rather than gimmicky sections. I mean they are still here but more as a assistance to the chaotic action rather than diversifying the levels as it's focus or at least that's how I felt. I mean there are still gimmick sections returning these are satellite weapon section or shadow bats... Wait sorry super rains that forces you to stick on closed spaces rather than light this time, or riding some vehicles(this time it's alive things you ride tho) and couple more like mine filled village or sniper section etc.

But I don't know... Compared to the first game these sections didn't wow me that much and felt really short. I guess I went with the wrong expectations perhaps.

Where the game puts it's focus is more straight cover to cover combat sections with even more choices to select where to go and... Unnecessarily a lot more turret sections. They up them 4 times more than the first game. It even ends on one(I mean something similar that is a vehicle with a gun on it). This game managed me to hate every single one of those sections. Why? Because I played on solo again and as a solo player, given time for you to kill every oncoming enemy to your vehicle or your base is really short also your fov is small enough to always miss couple of them and fail that section. Near the end you need to defend your own army base with turrets at the side and that section alone managed to infuriate me 10 times more than the first game's vehicle section. They really love to punish people that play solo ain't they?

It's not all bad tho. This game probably have the best mission in the gears trilogy also. That is about taking an entire castle with our small team. I have a big love for overtaking a giant enemy fortresses so that level is managed to win me back.

I wish it ended there tho. But game chooses to end on a cliffhanger rather than finishing on it's most chaotic and challenging mission. They choose to finish it on a turret vehicle... Section. At least that section looks cool tho 乁( •_• )ㄏ.

As for the story... It's exist to service to actiony moments just like the first one. People go above and beyond with it's emotional moment near the end. Yeah it was impactful. But other than that moment events nor characters isn't that memorable for me with how stoic and grumpy they are.

What is left is... Yeah also there is a dlc for this game that is about a cut content that is a small alternative version near the underground section that is more stealth oriented for some reason that feels not appropriate for this game. But also have the most insane difficult combat section in the end of it too(I managed to do it barely after 20 deaths, because enemies keep coming from every side)

So yeah that's my own thoughts. I know this game is the best gears game for most of you. I am not here to change that. But I guess my changing gaming taste over the years isn't matched with this unfortunately. Also I guess playing solo, kills most of the enjoyment as well because of the obvious coop balance these games have. So, yeah. This is my own thoughts. Thanks for reading

"Your world can end in the blink of an eye. One event, one unexpected twist of fate and suddenly the world as you know it... is gone forever. All that you held dear, all that you held close is washed away into the sea of distant memory. Life is cruel. Of this I have no doubt. But life continues on... with or without you. One can only hope that one leaves behind a lasting legacy. But so often the legacies that we leave behind... are not the ones that we intended."

------------------------------------------------

For me, this game will always be the definitve Gears of War. When it came out, the group I was with used to spend hours and hours playing Horde mode, leveling up in multiplayer, and generally enjoying themselves. I was never very good at it and barely reached level 5, but I didn't get to finish the campaign until this week either.

In its own way, Gears of War 2 is the most spectacular of the Gears, as each Act (which are made up of several chapters) presents you with a fairly obvious progression from calmness to action, to an arcade section and, maybe, a boss scene. It's very straightforward, but it also leaves you room to develop different strategies every time you fight. The difficulty levels are adjusted properly now, and your companions are hard-asses that help you every time, unlike the first installment. You also have a respectable array of weapons, and while the story is as over-the-top and stupid as ever, it now seems to embrace its absurdity. The tone has shifted from a (undeserving) solemnity reminiscing of Saving Private Ryan to something ridiculous like Chronicles of Riddick, with Rastafarian fighers and alien queens added to the mix. This game is also more deserving of the praise it has received over its way to criticize industrialist fascism, with many heavhy-handed metaphors but astute observations as well. The talk about solar power in Sera being held off by the Imulsion industry gave me the impression that someone bothered to take notes during this. Beyond that, the game also has its fair share of black humor that lightens the mood from time to time.

I have yet to play the rest of the Gears franchise, but for personal reasons, this will always be my dearest.

Gears of War 2 probably has a better story than its predecessor from an emotional standpoint as Dom's search for Maria certainly ends tragically. However, I think the first two acts are superior to the rest of the game and the level design isn't all that inventive. It kind of feels like just a recycling of the original's missions more or less. The gameplay also gets rather repetitive as I don't think enough was added. The AI for Dom is also really bad like he almost never revives you and the boss battles are extremely underwhelming compared to the ones in the first game.

The voice acting, music, and graphics for the time are still pretty great. I also like the new character additions like Benjamin Carmine, Tai and Dizzy plus Cole has some of his best moments in this entry. I loved this as a teenager when it was first released while I still think it's good it's just not as replayable.

I sunk a lot of hours into Horde mode too. That was a load of fun!

Shit, fuck Gears of War, more like Tears of War, man that shit has that lil’ bitch cryin’ all the time, you see that commercial? That little bitch-ass commercial with that song

This is a much better game than the first one and I am now actually interested in the series. better art style, better levels, more balanced difficulty, better AI (most of the time, sometimes they refuse to revive you even if you're right in front of them) and a more interesting story. The one thing that I don't like is the chainsaw mechanic, it's super fun but every time you get shot it deactivates it, fair enough, but then it takes like a ton more button presses to rev it up again, even after you've dodge rolled. after playing this I now understand why this series stayed a staple of xbox after the first one.

IT'S THE ALASKAN BULL WORM

I have been hyped about GoW2 ever since I finished the first game and with info slowly leaking out of Epic’s mouth and I just couldn’t help myself from getting all giddy and mushy inside. Ok enough, seriously, Gears 2 is just amazing on so many levels with tons of new multiplayer modes, weapons, enemies, environments etc. The game is just a whole new beast and old Gears fans will NOT be disappointed. First, let’s start off with the campaign, so you remember Gears one being huge and sprawling with wide vistas and beautiful architecture? Ok well, that was nothing compared to Gears 2. You really do have WIDE OPEN vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see and they are absolutely breathtaking especially on an HDTV. The graphics are still what we’ve grown to love, but with better lighting, higher resolutions, more objects on-screen and everything is just crunchier, and more big, beautiful, and hectic and ever before.

Speaking of crunching the game’s audio has been notched up and everything sounds more gruesome and brutal than ever before. Headshots pop and sound and feel more satisfying than before, curb-stomping an enemy looks more painful (and sounds it!), sawing Locust in half with the Lancer feels more powerful and just looks, feels, and sounds nastier. The whole game is like this and it feels like a true sequel instead of just Gear of War 1.5. All of your core elements are here like the great cover system, the Roadie Run (TM!!), the voice actors, characters, Locust, and story are all set in place but you are a bigger part of the whole thing and you feel more like a participant than a spectator. The story is more involved in which the Light Mass bombing failed and the Locust are coming back with their full force and Delta Squad is sent in to rip out the heart…three of them! Anyways, Dom is trying to find his wife along the way, and a few new characters are introduced but aren’t fully developed since they well…don’t make many appearances like Dizzy, Tai, Chairman Prescott, and a certain dad who will go unnamed…the story goes even further with 41 collectibles you can find that you can read and help evolve the back story some more. Gone are the COG tags people now you gotta find papers and more of them too.

Getting back to the campaign’s weapons there are about double the amount with a whole new weapon class: Heavy Weapons. You still have the Lancer, Boltok pistol, Shotgun, Longshot, Boomshot, Snub you know all those…but now you have better, crunchier, and kick BUUUTT weapons like the Hammerburst (gone is that dinky little Locust assault rifle), Gorgon Pistol (a semi-auto three-round burst Locust pistol), the Mulcher (a heavy weapons KICK @$$ mini-gun that you CRANK!), a Mortar (yes like a WWII mortar only better without all those Krauts), the Scorcher (a flamethrower that you can blind fire!), Ink Grenades (go figure), and a whole bunch others. These weapons feel powerful, sound powerful, and they are all useful and so useful in fact it’ll be hard to choose which gun you want to use half the time! Now this time around you also get to use more “vehicles” like the Centaur which is a monster truck tank…a Reaver, a Brumak, you know just cool “vehicles” like that. Yes, they all feel powerful and are just amazing to “drive”.

The campaign all together is just more riveting and more cinematic thanks to the HUGE open vistas, massive hordes of enemies, and the campaign is just perfectly built. The only problem is that it’s about the same length as the original and there’s room for a sequel. I just really can’t express how great it is to feel upfront in Gears and really drive things home with all of the awesome weapons, graphics, and audio. Of course I have to mention the new awesome Locust like the Tickers (little ticking and crawling “bombs”), the Kantus (these guys summon Tickers, and can resurrect downed Locust), Brumaks (only seen in GoW1 for the PC, and at the end of the fight at Fenix’s mansion), cooler looking Reavers, a whole “Boomer Class” like Butcher Boomers, Maulers (which have spiked shields you can carry!), Grinders (which carry Mulchers and yell “GRIND!”), Flamer Boomers etc. The whole old crew of enemies is here with great new ones and they are all fun to kill and the game is perfectly balanced.

Speaking of balanced let’s move on to multiplayer. Ah yes, good ‘ol Gears multiplayer is back with a ton of new modes along with the old ones. First off you all remember Annex, Execution, Warzone, etc. Now here are the REAL fun modes that make me really get into Gears multiplayer. Horde. Just one word: Horde. You and four people pitted against 50 waves of increasingly more difficult enemy AI. Yes, this is addictive, super fun, and you need a couple of hours on your hands if you and your teammates are really good. Getting through all 50 waves can take a good couple of hours, but boy isn’t it fun. Just imagine one guy sawing a Drone in half while the guy next to him is popping off headshots at Wretches and Boomers. You are at the enemy spawn point sticking grenades on walls and that last quiet guy is just hiding in the middle somewhere scorching Locust. Ah, is joyous and wonderful at best and you are sure to come back until you clear all 50 waves (I could only get to 36).

Now there is Wingman which is 5 teams of 2 against each other and you can only kill with executions (more on those later), or one-shot kills like a grenade or something. This is extremely adrenaline-inducing since all you can rely on is your buddy and if he dies it’s just you. Meatflag is very interesting since it utilizes GoW2’s new “meat shield” system where you can press A near a downed enemy (even in single-player!) and use them as a “human shield” as most of you would know. Other executions include the classic curb stomp, but if you press Y you can do “long executions” with other weapons like a golf club swing with the Longshot, or just use your fists and beat the guy up, but back to the multiplayer mode. In Meatflag it’s like capture the flag, but you have to bring the Locust back to your base so he’s a moving, shooting, ugly flag. This is super fun and an original twist on Capture the Flag. There are a few other modes, but these three are the 3 “blue light” modes that really stand out and are super addictive. If you haven’t noticed the player count has gone up by 2 so now there are 10 people playing instead of 8. This makes things more hectic and fun as you can tell. Thankfully the online mode plays perfectly with no server issues and there are a ton of new maps to play that is very well laid out and you’ll grow to love.

Before I close this out I have to mention the new achievement system. For once a game updates you on your achievements in-game while you’re playing without you having to pause and go into the guide. Let’s say you’re aiming for the new Seriously 2.0 achievement cough it’s oh nothing only 100,000 kills cough so you every 100 kills you get a widget will pop out at the side and update you on this. Try the new Said the Spider to the Fly (kill 10 enemies will grenade wall tags) and every 5 kills you’ll get updated. This is very helpful and is just a reminder of why you should keep playing this wonderful game. I love this new achievement system and more developers (multi-platform or otherwise!) need to take note of this. This takes full advantage of the system so please learn! Now this game isn’t perfect.

There are a few flaws such as we’ve seen the core of all of this before (GoW1 I gave a perfect 10), there are still a few bugs yet they were tweaked like the cover system. Turn the left stick a certain way and a little sketch will show up on-screen telling you what Marcus will do. While this is fine and all it’s just not perfect. There are times when you’ll want Marcus to roll a certain way, but he’ll snap against a wall. Yes, they let you change the buttons for this, but it’s still annoying. Multiplayer can be a biatch for people who aren’t very good at this. Gears veterans will smear you on the floor within seconds and will make a lot of newcomers hate multiplayer. There are mainly glitches that are only noticeable on Insane difficulty like collision issues that let enemies shoot through walls that will kill you in one hit etc. These are super minor, but we STILL have seen all of this before two years ago and I just can’t wait for Gears of War 3.

Rejoguei no xCloud.

Excellently paced, story falls slightly flat though where it swings for emotional moments that don't land
