Tearaway was developed to be a game able to show all Playstation Vita’s feature. When you heard this, you probably thought that’s a bad thing, right? It isn’t.

I never saw a game so good trying to show all of its console could do. Maybe Astro’s Playroom for PS5 has the same sucess.

Tearaway is 3D plataform game like Mario. The gameplay is nothing special but the way they use the Playstation Vita’s features makes this game a special one.

The story is about a creature who needs to deliver a mail to the sun, a mistic and mysterious creature who lives in another world. Who is the sun? You!

The game is always using the Playstation Vita’s camera. When you see the sun in this world, you are there.

How do we face the enemies? Using the touch part of the Playstation Vita’s back. In the game, you’ll see a finger emerging from the earth and doing the same moviments as you do.

They tell that the sun is helping the creature in its journey. That’s prety fun how they make you part of the story.

Tearaway is a really good 3D plataforma and it’s probably the best game that uses the Playstation Vita’s feature. You should play it if you have the chance!

A super creative game with really interesting puzzle platforming mechanics, managing to utilize practically every feature of the Vita (rotation, both the front and back touch screen, camera, etc). Besides some frame pacing issues, the only major con was that I wish there was more of the game. It's unfortunate that the original is trapped on the Vita, but then again I can't imagine how else it should be played.

pretty much the only truly brilliant Vita exclusive, and the kind of game that I would genuinely recommend anyone getting their hands on the console just to play this; It's welcoming, warm, effortlessly charming and looks, sounds and plays wonderfully. it makes actual creative use of the Vita's features and throws something new and fun at you each and every chapter right until your personally decorated protagonist comes to the end of their brief but surprisingly affecting journey. I plan on playing the PS4 version soon (which I imagine given the missing hardware features necessary to make the story work here, can't possibly live up to this) and am particularly excited to see how they adapt the story and controls. Tearaway exceeded all my expectations.

Tearaway was a fun platformer with an awesome construction paper aesthetic. It also used the Vita in some really interesting ways, like the camera and the rear touchpad. The only real negative I have with the game was that at times the controls and camera didn't perform exactly as expected. There were times where ledges/platforms would get missed - usually because of weird camera angles/camera movement. But aside from those gripes this was still a beautiful and charming game that was well worth playing through.

"Tearaway" is an incredibly creative game that showcases the ingenuity and originality that is familiar for Media Molecule. The game features unique puzzles and a high level of customization, allowing players to not only customize their character but also draw and create things in the drawing board making you feel like that is YOUR world. One of the most impressive elements of the game is the way it breaks the 4th wall by incorporating the camera and the finger touchpad, which is both clever and inventive.

The 3D platforming is enjoyable, but the camera can be frustrating at times, getting stuck in awkward places. Moreover, the Vita mechanics feel sluggish for most of the game, particularly the back touchpad finger and the "physical rotation of the Vita" mechanics. This can detract from the overall experience, leading to some frustration throughout the game.

Despite these flaws, "Tearaway" is an enjoyable and relaxing experience. The story is simple but cute, and the graphics and overall art style are fantastic. The game's chill and laid-back vibe make it a perfect game for anyone looking for a more relaxed gaming experience.

Media Molecule is a company known for its creativity, and "Tearaway" is a testament to their prowess. Although the game is not perfect, it is a great addition to their catalogue and a must-play for anyone looking for an innovative and charming game on PS Vita.

A wonderful 3D platformer that makes great use of the PlayStation Vita's functions. Even though an updated version exists in Tearaway Unfolded for the PS4, I still think this is the best version to play solely based on the Vita features that tie into the story of the game in very clever ways that I rather not spoil.

MediaMolecule once again created another artsy world that is very fun to explore so if you are into 3D platformers and happen to still own a Vita, make sure you try this game out (PS4 version is also great but a step down compared to the Vita game).

The creativity on display here is next-level. It's amazing how well Media Molecule has implemented every single feature of the Vita into this game. That said, beyond these fun features, the game isn't terribly interesting. The platforming is quite simple and the combat is equally trivial. This is a game that wholly stands on its charm and set design, but beyond the spectacle doesn't carry much substance.

I know it probably sounds like a bit of hyperbole, but I'm being completely genuine when I say this, I can't remember the last time a game gave me such immense feelings of joy and wonder as I played through it.

The one-of-a-kind art direction, the unique gameplay and puzzle mechanics, the flawless inclusions of what I thought were just pointless Vita features, the fun cast of characters, the way player expression is encouraged and even rewarded, the charming story, and above all else, the commentary on life in general, it's all just amazing.

Everything is so perfectly dialed in, and as I sit here typing this up while the credits are still rolling, the tears are still drying up on my face from the final scene (fuck man lol), and my Vita sits idly on my desk in front of me, I can hardly find all the words to express what a genuinely amazing experience this game was from start to finish. I've never played anything like that before.

I fucking love video games man.

Absolutely beautiful game, from its story, to its visual, to its gameplay. Just an fantastic game and world overall. Uses the psvita specific functions to perfection like very few games ever did.

Fun and cute game that utilizes the Vita's features really neatly.

Probably the best Vita exclusive thanks to that.

However, playing it on the PS4 dilutes the experience so much, that it ruins the game.

Tearaway Review (PlayStation Vita)

1. Story
Tearaway’s story is quite silly but this silliness really gives the game a lot of heart and fun energy. Basically, you play as a messenger whose mission is to send a message to the You, aka, YOU, the player. You jump, roll, and run through the world of Tearaway to fulfill this goal. Not much else to say here, but it often had me smiling and it was very charming!
2. Gameplay
The gameplay of Tearaway is a 3d platformer with lots of interactive elements using the PS Vita’s features. There’s your basic platformer jumps, using the back touchpad to bounce. You can roll in a ball and roll down slopes. You can hold your finger on the back touchpad to raise or lower platforms, and use the touchscreen to move or create platforms. It’s all very intuitive, and it's one of the few games I have played on Vita which actually takes advantage of the console's full list of features. You can use the camera and gyro to take pictures, and the back camera is even used to show the real world sometimes. The front camera also always shows your face in the sun while playing in game, which can be pretty funny! These inputs never felt too intrusive, nor gimmicky, they were often quite precise and worked fairly well most of the game. You collect an assortment of presents throughout the game, and you can also fulfill requests from NPCS. Finally, you can also take pictures of the papercrafts in the game and go on the Tearaway website and actually make them in real life which I thought was really cool. Granted, I never did, but I might someday. One last element of gameplay is combat, where you defeat these little monsters called scraps. Not much to it here, you grab them and throw them and that's about it. The checkpoints are quite generous as well, and you can jump between chapters at any time. The gameplay was overall fun and was pretty enjoyable. It was solid and I cannot really think of anything bad to say here so I will say it gets the Ryan Seal of Approval lol.
3. Music
What does not fare as well here is the music. Most of the time it’s alright, but I think it just is not my style. The style that a lot of songs go for is using a lot of pipe instruments, and other like unusual ones you would not hear normally. It was certainly different, but just was not my style most of the time. Overall, okay, but nothing more than background noise most of the time.
4. Presentation
The presentation of this game is TOP NOTCH. This game is once again evidence that strong artstyle and art direction will always beat good graphics. This game is so creative and vibrant and full of personality. Going with the papercraft aesthetic really makes it stand out even today. You can even make all the papercraft characters and objects you collect in the game in real life! That’s so cool! From fun choices like using glue to explain being able to walk up walls and stick to them, or cut pieces of construction papers used as a track to roll down, or the enemies being made of scraps of newspaper. I just love it! You can decorate your player character, and even make your own creations in game as well. It really feels like it was CRAFTED out of love. Hehehehe. Overall, for a vita game, I say it's one of the best looking games on the system. It hasn’t aged a day since 2013!
5. Completion Process
This game was pretty easy to complete all things considered. It was your usual tasks of collecting everything, doing everything, plus some miscellaneous tasks here and there. Some stages I had to clear without dying once, and some were quite tricky, so that was a bit challenging. Some trophies were also glitched, so I had to redo some stages and really try to see what I missed sometimes. But overall, it was fairly straightforward and not agonizing.

6. Conclusion
Tearaway is a fun, pleasant, and creatively created platformer by Media Molecule. It's full of charm, fun gameplay, endearing story and characters, and the player is encouraged to be a bit creative themselves! The game has a great artstyle with vibrant and varied environments. It was a cute, fun adventure from beginning to end with an enjoyable completion process and I am glad I played it! With that being said…

7. Wrap Up
Thank you for reading! Tearaway is available on PlayStation Vita. (Most people can’t play this version because it’s a vita game, so another option is to play Tearaway Unfolded, an expanded remake of the game available on PS4, and backwards compatible on PS5!)

FINAL REVIEW SCORE: CREATIVE PAPER CRAFTS/10

what if god was a game about joy on a doomed console. WHILE PAPER.

one of the few games actually worth buying a vita over. double surprising since its western, and not a lot of western devs supported the thing. The game is absolutely charming with a lot of the vitas gimmicks all being used in various fun and unique ways. The game just has a lot of heart put into it, which isn't surprising considering the developer here being media molecule. If you have a vita, you have to play this game for sure. If you don't have a vita (i do not blame you), there's a PS4 port that exists that replaces a few of the vita features with dualshock features, but I haven't played that specific version yet so idk how it be. Game is absolutely a fun pleasant time.

Very basic platformer but kinda meta.

As someone who played countless hours of little big planet, to find out the same developers made another game on a handheld no one owned (though I happened to own it) was really cool and I just had to try it! And believe me, I wasn’t let down in the slightest.

Tearaway, is an interesting game in the sense that it definitely takes a lot of notes from little big planet in terms of a few creative aspects and overall aesthetic. It’s a neat little adventure game that is surprisingly really fun to play on the vita. I’ve found myself returning to this game often as it’s just that fun to play and it’s an adorable little adventure that I can’t stop loving.

Nice story, interesting characters, squirrels

This game is really comfy. I like how it uses the back screen, it provides a new level of immersion that you don't get in other games. HOWEVER, I did encounter some strange collision detection issues, like getting caught behind walls and having to restart and whatnot. It didn't totally ruin my experience but it deffo lowered my view of the game. Other than that, it's quite fun. If you have a vita, get this game!

Tearaway is a charming, novel little game. It does its best to utilize every hardware feature on the PlayStation Vita, sometimes to a fault. The papercraft aesthetic is lovely, the controls are mostly solid (apart from the gyroscope ones), and the music occasionally teeters into greatness.

However, the story leaves something to be desired. As short as Tearaway is (the game can be beaten in a single sitting), there's still a bit of fatigue from the repeated fakeout endings. The characters may be cute, but the saccharine world and the narrators acting like hosts on a preschooler's television programme might take a while to grow on you. There's also no denying how much the game feels contrived around the handheld it's on, though that isn't entirely a bad thing.

There's little doubt that kids would love this game, but adults may well get a kick out of it too. As gimmicky as Tearaway is, it's a unique experience that makes for a cozy afternoon's play.

A really simple but really enjoyable little game. Nothing too deep but it's really cute and a lot of fun to play. It made really nice use of the Vita's little back touch pad and its many little features which was nice.

The ending made me weirdly emotional for some reason, cried my eyes out. This game fills me up with a feeling of childlike wonder and the whole meta narrative just sticks. This game uses vita's full potential and I'm extremely happy that I played it. The soundtrack, the artstyle, it's just that good. I don't even know if this game needs a sequel. It tells a pretty complete story about stories, but I just want more

This could have just been a tech demo but media molecule are just too cool to stop there, there's some genuinely interesting level design, legitimately wonderful calls to be creative, fantastic integration of the vita's capabilities and really heartwarming writing. All bought to life in a paper craft style, with some fantastic music, this is easily one of the best games on the vita and one of the best handheld games of all time.

One of the games that make me happy to have a ps vita

This was such a neat platformer but kinda forgettable in the long run

Un juego que recuerdo lleno de imaginación y el único que de verdad aprovechaba todas las posibilidades de la Vita, tenía la misma interactividad que los primeros juegos de DS

Media Molecule is known for innovation. LittleBigPlanet was a huge revolution in creative sandbox gameplay and platforming. Tearaway does the same thing for the Vita, but for the platforming genre. The game is the best looking game for Vita and is the only game out that uses all of the hardware’s features in a very unique and original way.

You play as the messenger Atoi who must reach the sun where a You (the player) has ripped a hole in and are letting Scraps inside the world of Tearaway. The game uses the front facing camera to show you in the sun. You can then control Atoi and guide him using the rear touchpad and touchscreen. There really aren’t complicated puzzles but challenging platforming sections. When you see gray areas with the PS buttons on it (like the rear touch pad) you can poke your finger through in the game. The first time I did this it made me giddy and smile. You can do this to fight off scraps, push blocks around, and bounce drum pads to help Atoi along. You can also use the touch screen to roll out paper and interact with dozens and dozens of various papercraft items.

Just these two major features alone are enough to call Tearaway the best game for Vita, but it doesn’t stop there. You can customize Atoi and characters in the world kind of like LBP. There’s no Pop-It but you can buy items using Confetti you find in the world. There aren’t as many items as LBP, but because it’s a straight-up platformer you won’t really need that many items. Tearaway also has a unique papercraft origami collection you can find and print out online to create your own Tearaway world. To acquire these blueprints you need to find pure white objects in the world and take pictures of them. This adds to the creativity on a whole new level and helps build on this “real world leaking into the virtual world” theme.

Outside of platforming and customizing things there is combat, but it’s very simple and easy. You can’t die in the game and combat never varies from jumping on Scraps or picking them up and throwing them. Some involve jumping in their Springpad and tapping them to kill them. I wish the combat were a little deeper, but what’s here at least works and is fun. There’s a lot of stuff to find in the world like hidden presents, and side objectives where you help out various animals. After you beat the game the only thing you can do is complete the game 100%, but the game is well worth multiple playthroughs.

Let’s talk about graphics. I have no idea how MM got this game to look like a PS3 game but they did. There are no jaggies, no ugly low-resolution textures, the lighting is great, and the animations are gorgeous. Wrinkled paper on the ground can be stepped on and you can watch it depress and raise back up when you walk off of it. All effects are done by paper and no other game looks like it. This is truly the best game on Vita right now and every owner needs to play this.

Media Molecule is a once in a life time game studio. They made LittleBigPlanet, and there you would think their creativity would peak because well, its LittleBigPlanet. But with Tearaway they show us once again that they know what they are doing. This game is charming to the max, utulises the Vitas features as best as a Vita game can do and manages to capture my imagination while also just being emotional by the end due to the time I spent with the game.

If you own a PS Vita, you should definitely play this game. It really utilizes the portable features well

Cute tech demo for the Vita - it was a little bland overall though. Decent enough platformer.

Never have I smiled more playing a game than I have with this game.
