I really enjoyed my time with eastward. The world is so charming, Sam is a cutie, love the ost and the story/writing kept me enthralled. The art was vivid and popped in every section, and the combat/puzzles were really entertaining and fun to solve. I damn near did everything in this game. Definitely one of the games I'll be coming back to over the years.

This game would be hard to say that I was disappointed. It looks nice.

what a cute game but it did crash on me 3 times

How dare people not love this game? One of the best games I've ever played.

The graphics are gorgeous, but the story dragged on and combat was kinda repetitive. I lost the motivation to finish it

An incredible story with fun combat, it's a bit easy but I don't care this is a fantastic game.

From all the different subjects to take in consideration on this game, the art direction is the strongest of all. Pixelart on this game is not only beautiful but fluid as well. The characters can communicate what they are saying and looking under a certain emotion or tought that really correlates from the look with the dialogue. Side characters like Alva, Isabel and other people that you meet through the adventure, are the ones who really shine between the cast. Story is probably the weakest(specially with some doubts that ended up staying with me after going through the game) but, I think it was enjoyable with all the things considered.

cute art and fun gameplay, reminds me of zelda, idk why but I put it on hold for some time now while picking it up for some minutes in between but not anymore, planning on continuing it though it's very cool!!

an great time, phenomenal pixel-art graphics with some really gorgeous animation and character designs, interesting puzzles and good moment to moment gameplay during dungeons in an similar feeling to top-down Zelda games which I love.

the story and text-box dialogues does get in the way though, not that the story is not interesting it indeed is and I was hooked to see what it was happening to the world and these characters but my god does it get tiring reading and skipping all these dialogue boxes, in Chapter 3 especially get ready to nearly 2 hours of conversations and getting to point A to B.

what makes things worst is that this approach to heavy storytelling hurts the game, imagine if this was more of an top-down Zelda game taking down dungeons with the interesting gameplay this game has and some really intricate overworld, this is not the case with Eastward.

if you like character interactions similar to Undertale you will probably like this but if you expect an Zelda game like the trailers suggest to be you will most likely get bored in the first 2 hours of the game, I still like it my time with it but I was expecting something more playable than what I got.

Really enjoyed my time playing this game. The art is gorgeous, the character designs are unique and the music is consistently fantastic. Moreover, the puzzles and dungeons are well thought-out and just challenging enough in my opinion. The cooking mechanic is also quite fun and encourages you to experiment with the many ingredients you can pick up at various stores in order to find all the recipes. The combat is decent, but sometimes frustrating, and definitely not the game’s strong suit.

Where it shines, however, are the characters. Sam is a charming lead who worms herself into your heart fast. She is talkative and full of life, but naïve and trusting to a fault at the same time. Hence, she complements the other main character, John, in a great way, as he is the silent, weary type with a heart of gold and distinctive protective streak. The side characters are pretty great too and feel alive with their own background stories and motives. Overall, the game is extremely narrative heavy and expects you to read a lot of dialogue. So if that’s not your thing, this game is probably not for you.

There is one chapter in the game that feels somewhat out of place (Once Upon a Time in Monkollywood). It really slows down the pacing of the story and features an exasperating stealth section. Otherwise, I enjoyed the story overall and its bittersweet conclusion. Although, I think the ending may probably be too vague and open-ended for many.

Sadly, the game crashed seven times during my entire playthrough. It mostly happened right after or before loading cutscenes. I never lost any real progression as the autosave feature is super solid. Still, it was a little annoying. So as others have already pointed out, probably play the PC or Xbox version instead if you have the choice.

One Day....

Incredible rpg here. It wears its Mother 3 influence on its sleeve while also doing its own thing. The dungeon segments worked really well and felt fresher than other Zelda-likes. Of course the plot/atmosphere/characters/music/vibe are the real stars.

It’s a slow game for sure, It took me ~32hrs, this is a full length rpg. The town segments have a lot of running back and forth. There’s so much charm and magic in the world that I didn’t really mind it, it’s just rare for a Zelda-like to be this length.

I got the true ending of Earthborn, the interesting and cool randomized arcade-style 8bit rpg in the game. It took me a while to figure out all the mechanics to it, for so long it felt like it wouldn’t happen, but once it clicked I beat the true dark lord on the first try. Really cool extra-rpg experience. For people who played it the one time and the story and weren’t into it, you can skip it, the only awards are two achievements.

Overall I enjoyed my time with this game a lot. It didn’t rip out my heart and leave me emotionally wrecked the way Mother 3 did, but there’s a lot of tears and laughs and love in there, with fun gameplay, beautiful graphics and music and charming writing and just a whole lot of good stuff going for it. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re a fan of long rpgs and 2d Zelda games, this is one for you.

A fantastic game in all aspects; visually stunning graphics, great combat controls and level design incorporating puzzles, and a very well fleshed out story that convinces me that this is a entire world that exists in another dimension/universe.

Every time the game present a new level with different enemy types, I kept thinking about how much time it took to create all of these sprites. That alone is very impressive. NPCs even have their own idle animations, as well as their speaking animations. This game did not take any shortcuts on the visual quality.

I won't forget the moment you advance from Potcrock Isle to the Strange Forest. It's an amazing shift in the tone and overall feel of the game. I really got a sense of what they were trying to achieve with that; living in an underground city for your entire life and stepping out into the outside world for the first time.

Some dialogue and objectives seemed a little too much, and I felt it could be trimmed a bit and you would still produce an amazing game. Some parts was starting to feel like filler, almost for the sake of making a long game and to let certain aspects of the game be used/shown multiple times to get the most mileage out of them. Expect to do the occasional fetch quest and sit through lots of dialogue. This is where my half-star deduction mainly comes from.

The OST can be a bit more varied. There were two tracks that felt very repetitive and I quickly grown tired of it. There are some amazing tracks that kick in towards the last chapter.

Overall sound design is spectacular and a treat to experience with headphones. Every step on a metal staircase or through dirt felt very satisfying.

Sam as a character seems fine for the most part, but I personally didn't see more dimensions to her or as much growth as the other characters, like Alva and Isabel, or even Daniel and William. She had her moments, but also felt a bit one-dimensional during dialogue. "John! Let's go!"

I enjoy John as the silent, main protagonist, and how there is a slight backstory behind why a fry pan is his main weapon of choice. I also like that he's some scruffy middle-aged man.

Supporting characters Alva, Isabel, William, and Daniel were fantastic additions during Sam and John's adventure towards Ester City. We don't see very much of Jasper again in the second half of the game because he's content in settling in a town before the duo heads further east. I do wish there was some kind of reunion there.

Enemy types were varied between different areas. It felt like just the right amount of variation. Again, huge praise for the attention to detail and work on all the sprites in this game.

There's a whole entire section for cooking in within the game, that is very reminiscent of TLoZ: BotW's cooking mechanics; combine ingredients, in this case, 3 slots max for ingredients, and one spice/flavor enhancer of choice. Before cooking, a slot machine mini-game will come up and depending on what you get, you can buff the food effect further.

There's also some light RPG elements. Not necessarily leveling-up your character, but upgrading and leveling up your weapons, backpack, and abilities, both through natural progression of the game and at specific shops.

I did not beat Earth Born, but may go back and try to beat it. That also in itself is an amazing accomplishment as well; a full-fledged RPG with some cool mechanics that slightly set it apart from traditional RPGs, at least from what I played so far.

This game is a major accomplishment for such a small team, and deserves to be celebrated by anyone who loves these kind of games. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys a lengthy story with lots of dialogue, TLoZ-like combat mechanics, Earthbound/Mother-like lore, and plenty of exploration.

Art is cute, music is great, but I'm so sorry I gave this game 15 hours and it was mind-numbingly boring to sit through.

Gorgeous art that's kept behind by it's uninspired gameplay.

I don't think I've ever wanted to love a game more than this

Really cute and visually really nice to look at but it's very story dense in some sections which sometimes really drags the whole game experience

Literally zelda x earthbound. Has really fun gameplay and probably the most gorgeous pixel art in a game I've seen. The music is also really good.

this game...i would've given it 5/5 until about halfway into the game. at a certain point, the antagonist becomes really annoying and you move from really gorgeous settings to a plain area that is ugly and dull in comparison. i also got hardlocked in a boss fight with no way to heal, and even though i had a previous save it refused to let me go back to it. had so much potential and was genuinely very pretty. but i'm not restarting the whole game.

Absolutely beautiful pixel art but unfortunately I didn't find the narrative particularly compelling

Touching tale of a father who refuses to hug his daughter

single father simulator. amazing art and even has dragon quest
