I have to admit, this was much scarier than I thought it would be – at least the first 2-3 runs, till I collected everything. Then all the following playthroughs were more of a chore than fun, unfortunately. True, if you’re only after all the endings, it’s enough if you finish the game “only” 9 times (plus one death), but if you want to complete the endings collection, on all five difficulty levels, then you’re in for a lot of grinding, let me tell you that. Honestly, I’m not sure who’s crazier – the one who came up with the idea of giving an achievement for all these, 20-25+ playthroughs (or 40+ without strategic saves), or the ones, like me, who decide to rise up to this insane challenge.

Anyway, the crazy amount of playthroughs aside, this is a solid survival horror entry in my opinion. It’s quite short, but really intense all the way till the end, with some terrifying jumpscares, truly unsettling ghost designs, and a spot-on, disturbing atmosphere. The location is one of the most common settings in Asian horror titles: a spooky high school at night, like in The Coma or Death Mark II, but in a 3D first-person view. I’m not familiar with the original version and how much of it was improved, but this remake looked quite nice, if you ask me, especially the shadows and lights, although it was nothing groundbreaking. The characters were OK, too, with some surprisingly detailed facial animations (although their arms seemed somehow off, I think they were a bit longer than they should have been). And the sound effects were amazing: the various noises like flickering lights, the rain outside, steps in the distance, something crawling near you, someone wheezing and crying somewhere, and, of course, the mumblings and keychains of the janitors… They’re all creepy as hell.

The gameplay was fine, but I’d recommend playing with a keyboard and mouse, as quite often you need quick but precise movements which are a bit more difficult with a controller. The timed events and boss fights can be quite challenging, especially on higher difficulty levels, and when the janitors are around you always need to switch into stealth mode, being extra careful and patient. There are also some complex puzzles here and there, so be prepared. As for the story, it’s a bit meh, nothing special, and there are a few plot holes in it which never get explained (or at least, I didn’t find an explanation for them). English localization was not bad, although there were some instances where the subtitles and audio had different translations.

All in all, as long as you’re not aiming for completing the endings collection, I can recommend this if you like similar entries, but yeah, it’s not for the faint of heart.

I had high hopes for this game and, for the most part, it wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, I think it opens strong but falls off after you leave the first part of the school. Way more moody and atmospheric at the start before it tails off into trying to stealth around the many janitors and entities. When it was only one I was so much more engaged. I'm curious to see what the sequel is like.

Hello Neighbor except it's in a school, it's actually terrifying, and it's not horse manure.

Pretty fun horror game. I like that its puzzle esque and I do want to learn more about the story and its characters. Its pretty funny seeing the MC in a lifegaurd outfit, he kinda rocks it. I definitely want to unpack more of this game

So I'm definitely missing something because the reviews for this game are relatively positive. I hated the experience of this game so, so much. The Janitor literally ruins it for me and it is not merely a "skill diff" He should not be able to see you from 5 miles away. Aspects of this game were also very unintuitive. Honestly I got very frustrated and dropped the game entirely. So many better horror games I could spend my time better with.
I guess not much to expect from a ported mobile game.

congrats white day porque vas a ser para siempre uno de los pocos juegos que si me hizo cagarme en las patas y no querer volver a repetirte nunca en mi vida!

I keep giving this another try every other year and I gotta accept it just ain't happening. I finally looked up videos of the results of my real goal (unlocking the female protag), and discovered I kind of hate her personality gimmicks. Alas

Such a good game! I wish I could have played it through multiple times, but the janitors really are the bane of my existence. So much so that I took a star off for them. BUT the students in this school are still using Windows Me... so at least I'm not them.

After giving up many times, I got back into this recently: I found the game to improve the further in I got, peaking at the eerie and prison-like 'New Building'  - the rooftop swimming pool still makes me shudder.
Random ghost jumpscares aside, the horror is really well varied: there are elements of Clock Tower, Fatal Frame and even Silent Hill (in terms of the school setting and bizarre, difficult puzzles).
As a remake it's mostly faithful to the original cult classic, although some lighting enhancements lessen otherwise frightening reveals. The design of the school is effectively creepy but, even in this remake, is certainly lacking the level of nuance and detail put into just the first Silent Hill. That said, some of the scares (certain large faces crammed into certain small spaces and such) are really effective and I like that it's kind of a dating sim with the various girl characters.
All of this plus numerous collectibles and side puzzles, not to mention nine different endings, make this the most complex horror story of a guy trying to get laid ever.

i stopped playing bc i got busy but i wanna play the original

edited (thank u commenter): Your average 2000s east asian horror game it doesn't particularly stand out in any regard.

There's a certain level of gameplay loop here that gets tired after a certain point, I'll admit that. But at the same time, White Day managed to keep me on my toes from beginning to end. Giving me no room to breathe or to take a moment of relaxation for myself. It's pressuring you with every step you take further into the game. It's got a scary setting with bunch of unpredictable scares waiting for you and there's replay value in it due to multiple endings. Great game, and very underrated especially here in the west!

sinceramente um game bem desinteressante e com muito esforço zerei ele, o game não tem nada de atrativo, sua história é contada de maneira extremamente precária de forma que você se perde fácil e até mesmo termina o jogo sem entender mais do que 10 diálogo.

super interesting concept, looked amazing, sound design is AMAZING & i loved the story.. but the janitors gotta chill out. i wanted to explore & take my time but having them harass you constantly was awful & made me start speedrunning it. i don't mind having to explore around, find items, read long dialogs & figure out what to do, actually i love doing that! but being helpless against something constantly fucking you up.. with a super weird ai that gets stuck in doorways but will immediately be unstuck when you open a door.. weehhh. i would love do the all the ghosts & endings one day, but it took a lot out of me just to get an "ok" ending :(

Quick Review

White Day follows a very recent new transfer student sneaking into his school at night. He tried to leave chocolates where his crush could find them in the following day, but ended up trapped in the school. To make matters worse, the school is filled with strange supernatural phenomena along with janitors who have strong intentions on beating any students they catch during their patrol.

The story itself starts off pretty simple, but eventually turns into something bigger. Like many survival horror games, much of the story is told through the notes you find across the game. Dialogue from various students and people that you meet also supplement the story as well. With that said, it's easy to miss some important aspects of the story.

There are multiple endings which are influenced by a number of various dialogue choices and actions you have to pick. Cutscenes and story paths diverge a bit, but the basic story structure remains pretty much the same until the actual ending. I didn't think the story was anything special out of the many survival horror games out there, but it was still an interesting one.

The graphics aren't particularly great. This version (released in 2015) was actually a remake of another game released in 2001. It doesn't appear that the graphics changed all of that much when it comes to the school and environments. The textures and models are very reminiscent of early 2000s games.

The biggest changes are actually in the character models which looks much better than before even though they aren't quite to current day standards. Like something from the PS3 era.

Despite the graphics, the game's atmosphere and tone are well done. The school setting is spooky and scary in places.

There are ghosts in the game which you can encounter. The higher the difficulty played on, the more ghosts you can encounter. Other than the ghosts, the only other recurring enemies are the janitors. If spotted, they will chase you and then kill you after a few hits. The hide and seek/chase situation is similar to those like Outlast.

The janitors really soured my enjoyment of the game at times. They can easily detect you and early on, the best way to escape from them are hiding in bathroom stalls. You couldn't really outrun them normally without running far away from your objective. These janitors aren't particularly scary either since they look like regular janitors.

The game is also played in first person despite cutscenes being shown in third person. The MC has a character model, but doesn't actually have any dialogue.

Since there isn't any combat in the game, the way the game handles the boss "fights" are interesting. There are a few puzzles in the game, but most are manageable.

It's worth noting that the game is on the short side. There's only 3 real areas to the game and each probably won't take you more than 1-2 hours to clear. Once you clear an area, there's little reason to return to them again. The multiple endings do give a decent amount of replay value.

Overall, White Day is a solid survival horror game with good atmosphere and tone. The story could've been told better and the shorter length of the game does detract from my enjoyment. The janitors are also a frustrating mechanic.

Great horror game! Very tense and spooky. Only had the energy to unlock one ending though.

I was enjoying this game up until the New Building. Up until then I was okay with the Run and Hide mechanics of the first janitor (on normal), but the second Janitor is actually such a bitch man. That is like the only problem with this game is the janitors are so fucking annoying. They will always be where you need to go, and they can hear a fucking pen drop 10 miles away.

Once I got a cheat table for this game, however, my enjoyment went back up. The atmosphere is pretty cool, constant spooky noises, sometimes ghosts appear. I do wish the conditions for making ghosts appear wasn't so restricted, like most of the time you have to pick up an item first, then do something. I do kind of like that you have to do specific things to summon a ghost, but it would be so much better if you just summoned a ghost encounter naturally (I do get you are supposed to find the ghost stories then try to summon them that way, but some of them still don't make much sense.)

I really enjoy the style of the character models, they look really good. I also really liked the voiced acting (English) in this, had such a unique quality to it.

Wish I could get a happy ending with Seong-a though 👍

If you grew up in an East/SE Asian country you probably absorbed a lot of creepy stories about the school you went to. Like dead bodies buried under the gym, or a white lady in the bathroom mirror if you spin around 5 times while chanting a prayer. This is that, and if it sounds appealing to you then try this out. It's very good.
