This might be my favorite 2D Metroid, compared to Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission. Even on my 1st playthrough, I could see lots of opportunities to skip sequences and get to areas earlier than expected. And unlike Super, it feels smooth and controls like a dream. I loved the added mechanics in this game, like infinite bomb jumping and strafing. The only things weak in this game were the item hiding locations being pretty straightforward and the final boss being a pushover.

Honestly this is probably the best metroid game. It's so fucking good. It has the atmosphere, level design, sequence breaking, and exploration that makes a metroid game so good. It sucks that this is a fan game, but it really doesn't matter. I consider it a Metroid game even if it's not official. I love it, and the Metroid fights are the only bad part about it.

Decent, but held back by adhering to Metroid 2's basic game progression, which doesn't really hold up when used as the framework for a modern game on modern hardware.

So good of a remake that it even makes the archaic design of the original fun.

A really solid remake of Metroid 2, done in the style of the GBA games and featuring a number of tweaks to streamline and smooth out the controls. Highly recommended.

Pretty damn great. I'm glad I still have it backed up on a spare hard drive.

my personal favorite 2D metroid game, and easily superior to samus returns.

Fantastic work but still have some flaws. I've watched DoctorZ64 progress for years and played all the demos. My only regret is that the Metroid bosses are a pain in the ass to kill. Every single one is terrible. It's not a "challenge", it's a chore. That's what made Samus Returns on 3DS better than AM2R in my eyes.

Still, it's an amazing fan game.

Another Metroid 2 Remake is a prime example of how many skilled fan developers exist. Milton Guasti proficiently crafted one of the best — if not the best — remakes and fan games in existence.

AM2R is an expanded and faithful 16-bit remake of “Metroid II: Return of Samus”, technically based on Metroid: Zero Mission and amazes with fresh and new ideas, areas, puzzles, bosses, quick travel and a diary to register levels and enemies automatically, so you can always take a look for more lore details.

Its colorful and beautiful 2D pixel retro look is mesmerizing and its sound design is as atmospheric and metroid-ish as it can be, but the best part of this remake is its thoughtful level design: nothing feels unfair, the item and enemy placements are on point and its level design teaches you how to make use of your abilities.

Without a doubt, AM2R is the best way to experience Metroid 2.

It's amazing and blows Metroid 2 out of the water. Some of the atmosphere might be lost but overall, it plays a lot better

A stunning example of what fan communities can do.

It’s really fucking good. This is the first 2D Metroid I’ve 100%ed and I had a blast throughout most of it. I did think the difficulty was kinda whack at times and it felt like almost everything would destroy me, but then I found out that’s probably because I completely missed the Varia Suit and didn’t go back to get it until after I got the Gravity Suit. That certainly would’ve made things easier...

I played the demo of this when it was in development and had fun with it, really though I just think Metroid 2 is a really fucking boring concept for a game. hunting down the Metroids just gets really boring after you've fought your 10th gamma Metroid. I feel like no matter how many times you try to fix Metroid 2 its still a flawed concept at the end of the day.

amazing remake, fanmade btw

Possibly the greatest fan game of all time.

gorgeous to look at, nice music. i ultimately didnt care for it too much as i don't particularly care for its foundation - i think metroid 2 is just too flawed to build anything off of without a complete 100% overhaul

Nintendo should hire the creator of this, a great remake and one of the best Metroid games.

Great. It has a few flaws but I personally love this.

+ Great gameplay feel
+ The game has a lot of effort put into it, and you can see it throughout the entire game
+ Puzzles are great
+ Inbuilt randomizer

- Limited by going off of the OG Metroid 2

Nintendo is so salty that the best Metroid game wasn't even made by Nintendo

Um dos melhores jogos de Metroid. Talvez melhor que o Super Metroid em certos aspetos.

A fantastic game made by a developer who clearly understands Metroid. It's a little held back by the repetitive structure of Metroid II, more so than Samus Returns if you ask me, but does everything that I love about the series otherwise. Splendid atmosphere, fluid controls, wonderful music, and minimal guidance traversing the depths of SR388.

These guys knew what was up, pretty good.

doesn't understand metroid II

A great remake, more difficult than zero mission but with repetitive metroid bosses. Quite fun though.

Completion: 89%

Let's get the plaudits out of the way early: AM2R is an amazing achievement by any standard. I've only played a few fangames over the years, and it blows them all out of the water, easily. If this were a commercial indie game released in a universe where Metroid didn't exist, it would do quite well. Compared to other entries in the series, however, AM2R goes about 90% down the path to besting Super Metroid, but it doesn't quite get there in the end.

Ultimately, this is (mostly) due to the limitations that DoctorM64 set for himself at the very beginning of the project. I understand he wanted to be true to the original game, but including nearly 50 repetitive fights with the various Metroid forms slows the game to a crawl. There are multiple sequences in this game that are just the same boss fought 3 or 4 times back to back, and it's just...not interesting from a gameplay perspective.

Which is a shame, because the rest of it is really, really good. I ended up 100%ing it, because it nails the mix of exploration, combat, and puzzles that the series is known for, arguably better than even Super Metroid. AM2R is also a game that controls remarkably well, which is probably my biggest issue with the series as a whole. Shinesparks and wall jumps actually feel good in AM2R, though if you don't know that shinespark-cancelling is a thing, you aren't going to be able to 100% the game. Not sure if that's the case for other actual Metroid games, but it definitely took me by surprise.

The repetitive Metroid battles contrast remarkably with the game's other bosses, which are quite difficult and involved by Metroid standards, but rarely unfair. I am definitely not a fan of the five-phase final boss fight, which is boring, lengthy, and punitive, but hey, it's a fangame, not everything's going to be perfect.

Overall, AM2R is an excellent Metroidvania that follows closely in the tradition of Zero Mission and the Actual Metroid 2 without falling prey to the excesses that typically come along with fangames. I highly recommend it.

It's weird that this is a straight remake of Metroid 2 because it feels like a fangame. Not that that's a bad thing, but the linearity of the areas and all the bosses being recycled makes this feel unofficial despite that being what Metroid 2 is actually like. The goal of this game was to bring Metroid 2 up to the style of Zero Mission and Fusion, and it definitely succeeds there. The graphics, music, and gameplay are all exactly up to those standards.
