ibuki just destroys any semblance of balance or fun you can get from this

so. it's good. but it's not great. it's difficult to not feel a little disappointed going from Alpha 2 to this game in terms of roster. it's not as drastic as the drop from SSFIIT to Alpha 1, but it's still a drop. i guess first entries in SF games are just doomed to have lean rosters? either way, at least the roster here is good for what it is. i think this game has probably the most unique and unusual (in a good way) designs in the series so far, with standouts being necro and oro. this cast probably has the highest ratio of characters i enjoy playing as, which is a huge positive in its favor.

the backgrounds and animations in this game are pure eye candy, by the by. the SF games have always had animated backgrounds with detail, but this game really steps it up a notch in terms of visual detail and spectacle. stage backgrounds have so much more going on and feel like areas with life to them, and they'll change between rounds to give the feeling of a fight progressing throughout a scenery. the animations are the best in the series thus far as well, and it's a treat to see the detail on animations from characters. they feel so... lovingly crafted.

i feel that going through every SF game we reach a point where i have to talk about the poorly designed final boss fight of arcade mode. here, we have gill. he has obscenely good projectiles, great air mobility, and his specials will freeze you. oh, did i mention that his super is a passive that will automatically revive him to full HP if he dies? shockingly enough, gill didn't frustrate me as much as he probably should've. i guess i'm just sort of tolerant now of bullshit in these games. just used save states to get through him with every character. can only imagine how much more nightmareishly annoying he'd have been without them.

i guess i can't rate this higher because it's just... light on content. i would probably have rated this higher if alpha 2 hadn't been so much better. this just feels like a bit of a downgrade in some ways, unfortunately. i know this isn't the quintessential SFIII experience either way, so i'm not knocking this game down a peg or anything. it's just a good foundation for what came later.

I love Elena so much, and I thank Street Fighter III for giving her to us, as a people. Seriously had no idea she was a 6ft tall high school girl, and the fact she only kicks is honestly super interesting. I don't think she's as broken as she is in Ultra Super Street Fighter 4, but she is a testament to what makes SF3 special. The game itself has it's own style to it and while the music is fresh and the stages are dynamic and pretty, I can see how this game would feel like style over substance at first. Aside from parrying, SF3 adds more supers into the mix to give the player plenty of options, but that simply doesn't make up for the lackluster roster. Not to mention, that Gill is pretty much one of the worst final bosses in fighting games around with so many of his attacks just outright shutdown options, his super that heals him all the way, and the random amount of super combos he pulls on you. Gill is like a much tamer Rugal, sure you can actually do combos and supers on him, but he will kick your ass immediately if you slip.

So weird to play this game in it's very first incarnation. It's a completely different beast, but still quite fun. The cast is certainly missing a lot of iconic character most people associate with 3rd Strike, but at least most of the freaks are accounted for lol. Mechanically speaking this is by far the richest Street Fighter yet, and the CPS3 board allows for some insane visuals. The presence of Hugo's unfinished sprites in the game's data suggests that there was probably more content planned, but it was pushed out instead to a new version in the form of Giant Attack.

For what it is, New Generation is good, just missing something.

This is a true story: I was 9 when this came out, and was at one of the first arcades down here that got it. I finally got up to the cabinet and was about to play as Ryu when someone a coin on the cabinet. I did not know that meant they had the next game. I hear behind me, an adult man of african-amercian descent yell "YO MAN, DID YOU JUST TAKE MY NICKEL?" I panicked and said sorry and that they could play and ran out of the arcade and on my way home thought to myself "Oh, is this how people become racist?"

this is going to get me my fighting game license revoked but I don't really vibe with SF3 all too much. While I respect the decision to make a full roster refresh, the new characters don't really vibe with me the same way that like the sf alpha gang did. I will say the fighting engine is CLEAN though. The final boss fight also sucks ass because the mfer can revive himself if he has meter and dies which is ass. Maybe the later revisions of SF3 are better but I wasn't really feelin it with this.

I played with only Dudley - love a boxing character in a street fighter, the range, the pace - it all just feels good. Dudley is a blast to play with. The game as a whole, also good.

i like it but it's hard to call it anything above good when third strike exists

This game is pretty basic to be honest, it has scenarios that look unfinished and etc, but the OST is cool, and if the cast in this game wasn't mediocre, I'd give it a higher rating, and besides, there's no real reason to play that version when there's 3rd Strike.

Muito difícil de ganhar do Gill do Vigor

i've forced to play with Alex so now I can handle being a grappler better

I cannot emphasize how good the 2d art looks. It still looks better than most 2D projects coming out today. Couple that with an awesome fighting engine and you got something good.

Was very surprised by how small the roster was for this one initially. I know its a staple for SF games to build up the roster through ports but somehow I wasn't expecting it to be this tiny. It's nice to see how they build up from here.

Also fuck Gil.

The beginning of a stylistic and technical revolution of the SF series. This game will charm you and make you want to explore all of the 3 series.

Street Fighter III starts off with a great game! I think the fighting is as good as it can get with this franchise (well, a little under Street Fighter Alpha 3). It has everything great I've said about previous installments in the franchise. My only issues with this game are the sound, music, and lack of fighters in the roster. Other than that, it's great!

GRADE
A-

There will never be a fighting game ending more sigma than Dudley's getting his car back.

Finally! SF 3! And...it's kinda...good?

SFIII: New Generation

8/10

no real reason to re-visit this game these days aside from the exclusive stage themes + slightly different background art from 2nd Impact.

i do have fond memories of being a kid and bouncing between this and X-Men vs. Street Fighter in arcades, but i can see why this game didn't do well. luckily Capcom was able to salvage the SFIII series with the future iterations.

the aesthetics for this one in menus have a sweet spot in my heart, and I think i like literally every iteration of SF3 a lot compared to the previous numbered header entries
not that I think theyre not worth playing but I think every SF3 [insert subtitle here] is way more consistent than it's contemporaries

Dudley so fanny

thats WHAT IM TALKIN ABOUT BRING BACK TWELVE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CAPCOM

Fun game, bit of a bland character pool in comparison to other titles though. Generally was okay when playing through the arcade run

Main - Ken

The parry system still has a long way to go to become as fleshed-out and skillful as in 3rd Strike and the roster is pretty small, but it's still a fun game to come back to and see the evolution of SFIII

Alex fucking sucks in this game WTF!!!!!!

Yeah its fine. Nothing worth looking back at but its cool to see SF3 at an early stage. The music is good, and the stages look great too. Presentation only gets better from here, but the game is fine. Unfinished.

Solid Game, definetly interesting to see how Street Fighter 3 began

How did they make the greatest fighting game ever out of THIS 😭
