Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, this is the best gaming purchase you could ever make back in 07. At double the price it still would have been a steal.

my entire childhood is in this orange box

I feel nothing will ever come close to this deal. Outside of gameplay perspective the communities birthed by this game has been the catalyst for many personal and professional friendships, I am forever thankful for this game.

A collection of some of the best games ever made, even on console, except for TF2 though i guess

All the Half-Life 2 stuff, plus Portal? Good deal.

the absolute best introduction to valve games. blew my mind when i got it on 360 as a kid

Was great at the time, I don't think there's much reason to get this nowadays, especially since TF2's console servers are almost completely shut down last time I checked. Still, it was (and to an extent still is) worth it for Half-Life 2 + its episodes and Portal.

2007 was such a great year for gaming and this beautiful box was a big part of that.

Some of the first non nintendo games I ever played and holy shit they still hold up

absolute best buy of 2007. even on xbox.

One of the best bundles out there for highly rated games. I got to play all of these for the first time. Half Life Episode 2 and Portal are great single player experiences and Team Fortress 2 was a heck of a good time for a long time even on the PlayStation.

you get 3 of the greatest games of all time what can i say more? also for the console and they were decent too. i love you valve <3

The best deal you'll ever have in a single collection of games.

Take Team Fortress out of there and it's perfect.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't think every game in here is a masterpiece, but every game here is damn good, and extremely influential in their own right. The package costs only $20, with regular sales down to dirt cheap prices, and you do yourself a disservice by not buying it.

Half-Life 2 and its episodes are basically what turned me from an elitist jRPG fanboi to a video gamer who likes video games. Basically perfect, and I haven't even touched Portal and Team Fortress 2.

Though it has been said very often, it is undeniable that this is probably the best collection of games ever made. Consistent quality throughout all 5 entries for a very good price and a nice to play them on console.

After playing on PC this feels really bad on console, but still get these games.

Honestly one of the best collections out there back in the late 00s.

Bought this for half life and was absolutely blown away by it and portal. Team fortress was meh, but it introduced me to the far superior pc version. Hard to understate the hours of quality content you get for your money here.

At the time this came out, it was pretty much Valve paying you to play their games for how much bang for your fucking buck you got.

I never beat Half-Life 2 when i rented this because I thought it was boring.
I have since retracted that sentiment.

The Orange Box is a bundle of five games (two are basically DLC/Expansions) that are all legends within their respective genres. Valve came out flexing here and basically said "Look at all the amazing content we've made, here it is in one package" and the gaming world is far better for it. Experience the beautiful sci-fi and horrific world of Half Life 2 (and Episodes 1 & 2,) the classic team based shooter Team Fortress 2, and the best marraige of puzzle and narrative in Portal.

Insane compilation of games, perhaps the greatest bundle of all time.

4 solid games and also version 1.0 of team fortress 2

"PC FPS For A New Millennium"

"The Orange Box" was a breakthrough compilation for Valve Software, and served as a great example of the quality of service the company had served throughout the 2000's and late 1990's. It combined three newly released PC FPS titles (Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2) alongside two other celebrated FPS games (Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1) in a steal of a package. Not only that, but it provided an opportunity to experience some classic (HL2E2), current (TF2), and future FPS masterpieces created by some of the best developers of the genre at the time, all for a discounted price!

Now I could go into a review of each individual game, but I will have a separate review of each one full finished soon enough so I won't bother here. Instead I will shortly discuss why I give this collection a "masterpiece" score.

This collection was sold at $50 (or $60 for consoles) upon release, which for the PC's case was a discount on all three games for buying the collection. This is impressive considering Valve chose to compile three newly released games together as a Day One purchase...with a huge discount. This pro-PC gamer mindset was a huge deal at the time, and really helped to support a platform that was not getting as much love as the console scene at the time was getting. Additionally, these games all ended up being quality titles, if not masterpieces of the genre in general. These titles perfectly supplied a mix of immersive storytelling, puzzle solving, class-based multiplayer, quality presentation, and tight game mechanics. It's simply a perfect package of style and substance for the FPS genre as a PC gamer, and this is coming from someone who was not able to experience these games in their heyday.

"The Orange Box" is just a masterclass in quality FPS game design and positive consumer behavior for the industry. It provides a great deal and a great experience with each part of its package, and solidified Valve's spot as a legendary developer (even if just for that specific time). I Recommend any and all to purchase the games in this collection despite it being discontinued as a collection currently, but the heart and soul of these games continues to live on to this day.

Final Verdict: 10/10 (Masterpiece)
