I don't ever wanna hear anyone ever say "Oh Redfall was pretty bad but not as bad as Gollum or that King Kong game", mf this game is worse then both of them and I've played all 3 so I know what I'm talking about.

Now is Gollum and Kong "objectively" worse than Redfall, yes; but I don't like viewing art in objective terms. So let me say it like this. Gollum and Kong were both made by smaller middle budget studios given a minuscule budget and an even smaller time frame to release said game. In the case of Kong it's just boring shovelware that somehow got popular on Twitter and Youtube, and in the case of Gollum it was the victim of a studio way too passionate and not nearly as talented giving an impossible task and as a result an interesting if not flawed idea turned into one of the biggest jokes of last year causing everyone at the studio to lose their jobs.

Redfall is neither of those. Redfall is scum. Redfall is the result of higher power taking a quick glance at popular trends and then tasking an extremely talented team to make something they're not trained or know how to make. So the game pretty much languishes in development hell for years causing the studio to bleed all that amazing talent from their past games, and then the higher powers decide they got cold feet and no longer want the game they asked the studio who knew nothing about this genre of game and know want them to make it like all their other games, unfortunately that's not how game development works and they were too far in to backtrack now and too much money had been sunk into it so now it has to be a patch work job where the devs need to work around the game they spent 3 years making in order to please the higher powers. Then the higher powers get bought out by an evil power hungry mega corporation and now Redfall is not just "a new game made by Arkane '' but rather "a new game/reason to buy an Xbox". It's now been put on a pedestal by Xbox and Bethesda executives as the next big AAA Xbox release and now the patchwork game that barely works and should've been canned years ago needs to match up to the high echelons of not just the studios past games but also a brand that is comprised of franchises like Halo, Gears of War, and Blinx The Time Sweeper.
So the game released and it's a complete disaster, not because it's a buggy barely functioning game, but also because it's a big fat load of shit.

As looter shooter go Redfall does pretty much nothing new with it's systems and mechanics that have been in-play since 2012, and as a FPS it's somehow worse than Prey 2017 which is funny since the guns in that game were better than Redfall's and that was one of Prey's biggest faults. Enemy variety is piss poor even after all the updates the AI is still dumb as shit. Missions and objectives try to do the usual Arkane immersive sim pick your own path style but since it's an open map and not handcrafted levels the mission designers can't go crazy with path ideas so as a result it's very bland and basic. Character are the most annoying "how do you do fellow kids" shit I've seen since the Saints Row Remake and it really didn't do the game any favorites that the character I picked was probably the most annoying one out of the lot. (Her tagline was The Telekinetic Threat in Student Debt :T) It probably also dosn't help that the story of the game is told not through cutscenes but rather through still framed of model with narration in the background, I've seen Xbox Live Arcade games with more unique cutscenes and animations then this what the fuck??????

Redfall is a products and I mean that in the most demeaning way imaginable. Almost every aspect this game has does nothing new and feels like a hollow attempt to ride the trends of other games while not understanding what made them good. I shit you not I genuinely think the Gollum vs Sméagol argument system is a more original and fun idea then anything in Redfall, yeah sure it didn't work properly and was kinda goofy but the idea for it showed the devs knew what they were working on and wanted to try something that was inline with Gollum as a character and it's a more original idea then anything in Redfall. By the end of Redfall during the final boss I had lost most if not all respect for the game, and then the game hit me with a basic enemy gauntlet and a final (press E to kill the final boss). After doing that and seeing the last cutscene deadass I was like this for the rest of the night My honest reaction.

I hate this game, it's everything I hate about the AAA gaming scene and it's borderline anti-art.

Devoid of any form of entertainment

There's some interesting stuff here - I am still a fan of Arkane's shabby storytelling/killer worldbuilding combo, and I think the actual world space is interesting in this even if a lot of the "dungeons" are not even close to the imsim level design quality of their previous games. I think the backlash (worst game ever, biggest first party failure ever) is maybe slightly too strong but I don't really see a reason for anyone to play this except as a document of Arkane history. The quests are dull, the gunplay is decent but insanely repetetive. The RPG elements are let down by the fact that all the character abilities suck and so the upgrades do too. The looter shooter aspects are lame (very little weapon differentiation which I think is a must). The enemy designs are cool, especially the bosses, but those fights are let-downs narratively and in gameplay. Beyond that a lot of the game is barely holding itself together - even nearly a year post-release the leveling is often bugged, audio is bugged, quests and quest markers often bug, multiplayer occasionally completely breaks.

Felizmente, não fiz parte do grupo seleto e inigualável de guerreiros resilientes que suportaram a bomba atômica que tinham em mãos quando tentaram jogar Redfall em seu lançamento.

Hoje, posso dizer que o estado do jogo é muito mais agradável. Há uma boa fluidez na jogabilidade e não tive tantos problemas com bugs relevantes.

Sim, vou considerar as frequentes t-poses como alívio cômico.

Mas afinal, vale a pena jogar Redfall?

Por incrível que pareça, existe uma realidade onde a resposta dessa pergunta é positiva.

Basta usar a imaginação. Mentalize no seu subconsciente que Redfall é o melhor jogo eletrônico já feito na história da humanidade, assim como Morbius também é o melhor filme da história do cinema mundial.

Faça isso, mas com companhia de amigos, e sim, dessa forma serão dignos de experienciar uma obra atemporal dotada de genialidade.

Yes, I did actually beat this game.

Redfall is awful. It is creatively bankrupt in every possible way, and somehow manages to make vampires even less imposing with how easy they are to defeat via the bad AI/pathing. I used COD Zombies strats (training) to kill vampires in this game, and those worked. In fact, I used that strat for every single boss fight and it worked. I've fought more gun-toting cultists in this game than actual vampires, it feels like. There's numerous bugs, like vampires just standing still even when you walk right up to them, T-Posing, weird warpy voids of black mess that extend from dead bodies.

It's probably the worst game I ever played and I'd give it 0 stars if I could. I guess it gets half a star for the gunplay being OK at best.

Não dá galera. Eu tentei gostar, joguei depois das correções, sem nenhuma expectativa mas o jogo ainda parece inacabado, ele não funciona direito, e não estou falando de crashs, bugs, etc, estou falando do design em si. As missões são vazias, a história é vazia, a parte looter shooter é fraca, combate é ruim (e olha que é difícil fazer FPS ruim), a cidade não marca, esperava pelo menos algo da direção de arte, e nem isso eles entregaram. Queria mesmo entender o que aconteceu dentro da Arkane pra um projeto tão fraco como esse ser lançado.

Joguei sozinho, mas consigo visualizar que jogar em grupo melhoraria significativamente minha experiência.

I felt nothing playing this game. Where do I even begin with it's issues.

For one, it's very lackluster. For a looter shooter, there's barely any variety in the "loot", just a few different weapon types and a couple of legendary guns per type. And the playable characters have only a couple of abilities, with most of them not being interesting at all. Most of your skill tree is just basic upgrades shared across the cast, and the few unique ones you get are extremely simple. It's a Borderlands clone, without any of the things that made Borderlands fun.

Obviously at launch the game was buggy as hell. Glitched missions, glitched achievements, graphical bugs everywhere. I'm sure some of the issues have been addressed by now, but it doesn't save this game from being less than mediocre. Also, trying to traverse the map is so frustrating that you basically need someone to play the character that has movement abilities.

Gameplay is sub-par. Usually Arkane tries to promote stealthy play in their games, and they certainly TRY here, but it doesn't work at all. There's no reason not to just run in and shoot everything. Human enemies are just fodder, and the vampires are annoying nuisances at best. Being able to instantly teleport to a different location makes it so that shooting them is a drag. The first boss fight is extremely annoying, as it just throws hordes of enemies at you, and every subsequent boss is a nothing fight.

This game had potential, but falls flat in practically every way. One day I'll come back to it to get the achievements I'm missing, since for some fucking reason they made the gamerscore values uneven.

Played the first half/map. in a better state compared to launch on a technical level, but extremely boring and lifeless. There are occasional flashes where you see that there could have been a little potential here, but at its best this is an alpha for side content in a far cry game.

Maybe the real Redfall was the friends we made along the way.

Estava tudo lá.

Não é surpresa pra ninguém que RedFall foi uma grande decepção em seu lançamento.
E como não sou boba nem nada, chamei mais uma vítima para ter uma experiência atroz em RedFall comigo.
E foi a escolha mais sabia que já fiz.
Oque era pra ser uma tortura, acabou que foi no mínimo divertido.

As T-poses, os IAs burros, as dublagens atropelando umas às outras e etc.
Ver esse tipo de coisa sozinho chega a ser cabuloso.

Fica aí a dica, não jogue RedFall, a não ser que tenha uma companhia para tirar sarro dessa bomba.

E assim a Arkane me decepciona pela primeira vez, Redfall não é só o pior jogo do estúdio mas como um dos piores triplo A dos últimos anos.

O maior defeito de Redfall é que ele não é um Borderlands e também não é um Far Cry ou Dishonored. Redfall é NADA. Nem sequer um FPS decente. Um jogo em que é perceptível um pivotante de ideias ao longo do desenvolvimento, que transitou entre conceitos e que no final entrega nada do que propôs.

A história de Redfall se passa em uma ilha de mesmo nome do jogo em que a trama gira em torno da ganância e das experiências que acabaram transformando a pacata ilha em um grande fã clube de vampiros. Os poderosos sugadores de sangue além de bloquearem o Sol, também “congelaram” o tempo e o mar em volta da ilha impedindo que os sobreviventes escapem e para tentar acabar com essa ameaça, nós embarcamos em uma aventura como um dos quatro personagens jogáveis que estão presos neste local. A ideia é interesante a princípio, a melhor parte dessa trama é a história dos “deuses” vampiros e seu passado que nos leva a entender o que causou todos os problemas, em contrapartida os personagens jogáveis tem passados fracos e as missões secundárias que envolvem os sobreviventes são totalmente descartáveis. Infelizmente não existe nenhuma conexão direta e nada é bem desenvolvido aqui, você dificilmente irá lembrar o nome de algum NPC ou irá se recordar de algum acontecimento, no final das contas a história está aqui mais para justificar os acontecimentos do que para deixar qualquer tipo de marca.

Bem, a história é um ponto que poderia ser deixado de canto caso a jogabilidade fosse minimamente interessante, mas nem isso consegue. Redfall falha ao tentar misturar elementos de FPS, looter shooter e RPG mas não consegue desenvolver nada muito bem. Além de uma gameplay travada para um FPS dito como frenético, os sistemas de dano, level e árvore de habilidades são pífios, não existe sistema de craft e tudo o que você coleta se transforma automaticamente em dinheiro que é utilizado para reabastecer seus recursos, o que é uma pena pois a quantidade de itens coletáveis é grande, o que me levou a crer que provavelmente este sistema foi planejado, mas cortado durante o desenvolvimento. Essa falta de customização faz com que as armas não possam ser melhoradas e por causa da quantidade de itens novos, você ficará constantemente gerenciando o inventário e alternando entre armas. Em complemento, a desinteressante skill tree gira em torno de habilidades com efeitos desinteressantes que não mudam nada a forma como o personagem joga e custosas demais para os benefícios fornecidos. Quando você pensa nas grandes árvores de habilidades encontradas em jogos como Borderlands 2, onde diferentes combinações de vantagens afetaram severamente a maneira como um personagem se apresenta, em Redfall, elas quase não causam impacto, o que significa que há muito pouco a apreciar aqui na forma de buildcrafting

A diversidade do arsenal me agradou. Na lista de armas convencionais temos desde pistolas, metralhadoras, rifles e espingardas, armas estas que causam muito dano em humanos, mas pouco dano nos vampiros. Por outro lado, as armas especiais são específicas para enfrentar os vampiros e são separadas em três categorias, sendo um canhão de luz UV que petrifica os inimigos, um disparador de estacas que causa muito dano e um sinalizador que causa danos altos e coloca fogo no inimigo. A ideia de diversificar seu arsenal para cada tipo de situação é bem divertida e funciona até que bem, mas a falta de variedade em si e de customização, fator esse fundamental para esse tipo de jogo, é que joga tudo pelo ralo.

Já no quesito IA dos inimigos, houve um retrocesso absurdo. A Arkane nunca foi conhecida por ter uma boa programação de adversários no ambiente, mas aqui parece que não houve programação alguma. Além dos inimigos comuns serem extremamente desinteressantes (apenas alguns bosses e minibosses se salvam), são burros a ponto de mirar e atirar em direção oposta a sua, chega a ser hilário.

O ciclo de jogo é curto e o mapa de Redfall não é grande e nem denso em pontos interessantes. A ilha é dividida em áreas que servem como diferentes mapas, cada uma possui pontos de viagem rápida, abrigos para serem ativados e um chefe. As missões principais e secundárias envolvem geralmente ir até algum lugar para coletar algo e aqui temos um grande problema, pois o jogo não possui destaque de itens chave e você irá perder mais tempo procurando o item no local do que indo até lá ou enfrentando inimigos. Jogando de Jacob (o sniper que fica invisível), meu loop basicamente se resumia a pegar uma missão, correr até o local, utilizar a invisibilidade para passar pelos inimigos e procurar o item da missão completando o objetivo, dessa forma era só voltar para a base para enfim fazer tudo isso de novo. A apresentação inicial do jogo é interessante, mas não demora a tudo começa a ficar enjoativo de se fazer, pois você se vê repetindo as mesmas tarefas, enfrentando os mesmos inimigos sem nenhuma variedade ou um real objetivo.

Uma vez que os créditos rolam, é isso. Reinicie o jogo em uma dificuldade mais difícil ou com um novo personagem. Não há mais atividades para desbloquear e explorar, é possível vencer o jogo, sozinho, na dificuldade mais difícil possível e fazer tudo menos de 15 horas, não há muito o que apreciar em forma de conteúdo pós término.

Por fim, graficamente Redfall é tenebroso, não é um jogo de nova geração e não é tão bonito quanto poderia ser, quando comparam com gráficos de PS3 não ache estranho, em ponto à razão. A arte tem uma abordagem cartunesca e embora traga alguns efeitos de iluminação legais, temos uma baixa variedade de cenários e praticamente todos os modelos de personagens são esquisitos e pouco definidos. Somado a isso temos a otimização que foi a gota d'água, entregando 115 FPS nas áreas de hub fechadas e baixas para 25 fps nas áreas abertas. Além dessas taxas de quadros abismais, o jogo também sofre com texturas surgindo, travamentos duros, inimigos com falhas, NPCs em T, e tudo isso em cima de uma conjunto de movimentos que luta contra você enquanto você joga, tornando a travessia das partes verticais do mapa frustrante. A trilha sonora não é das melhores, os efeitos de armas são genéricos, existem poucas falas para os inimigos, a música de fundo toca em momentos aleatórios e sem sentido, mas pelo menos o jogo está dublado em PT-BR (apesar de que todas as falam remetem ao plural, como tivessem outras pessoas na party mesmo jogando sozinho, o que é estranho ao extremo).

Redfall é uma enorme decepção, apesar de ainda conseguir enxergar um pouco do brilho da Arkane nesse abismo. A única alternativa viável para jogar seria caso você tivesse amigos com o jogo para tornar a experiência menos cansativa e problemática, dá pra dar pelo menos algumas risadas, mas nem sei se vale a pena uma assinatura do GamePass só para jogar isso, e óbvio, definitivamente não vale o preço.

Redfall at this point is an anomaly. Critical and public reception has been abysmal marking it as the first big miss for Arkane. Failure seems to bring out the worst folks and has drawn away from more important conversations to be had. Redfall is not the game I wanted it to be. It is not the game that the downbeat zeitgeist has made it out to be. It is a mess, but at the end of a twenty-hour playtime it was a mostly good time leaving one question, am I so out of touch?

It isn’t that hard to make excuses when you can see the stumbling blocks a mile away. No studio can change their engine or design, let alone both, without facing hurdles. Add to that some early mandates for a game as a service, a pandemic, staff attrition, and an acquisition and you just get the sense that Redfall was built on an insecure foundation.

There are plenty who will say that there is nothing here. A rotten package at the core. An exaggeration at best and certainly a byproduct of the greater fervor surrounding the game. The core is respectable enough. It is simply that there are asterisks attached to a lot of the compliments you might be able to give the game. Take for instance combat. It feels good and there is enough variety in the characters to have something good here, but the enemy design and placement is so poor that there is hardly ever a real engaging combat loop. To make things worse, any trademark complex level design of Arkane is gone too. Most buildings are empty—one way in or out. It is a game of simple environments and simple enemies to shoot at.

The real shame is a small town during the fall harvest caught up in spooky shenanigans is the setting of most great Halloween stories, but the town must have people in it to feel real and Redfall is barren. there are no people to connect with out in the open world. There just isn’t any real connection between the player and Redfall. NPC interaction is limited to the safe houses and itself is limited. Where most games rely on game loops or engaging characters Redfall can’t even provide proper cutscenes. After an initial animated cutscene and a proper in-game cinematic setting up the scenario the entire rest of the game is poorly color graded still images with vague narration. This is not effective storytelling. Arkane is capable of great diegetic and cinematic storytelling. Redfall has glimmers of an interesting story within the game world hinting at something more than the still image slog ever does. You have to really dig for that, and it is just so disheartening.

Playing through the game it felt as though some adjustments to the enemy design—placement, AI, variety, and consistent difficulty—would do wonders in setting the game right. Is it ever going to be a masterpiece with just some general improvements? No, but that doesn’t mean people should hold this over Arkane and the industry at-large for the rest of time. There are some real issues here. Some not so easily fixed. You can’t just make cutscenes for an entire game for free. You can’t just populate the world with neat things to find. You can’t just make the characters feel more present with a few weeks of dev time from a reduced team. Hell, even if the team does tweak its enemy design that won’t fix the games greater structural weaknesses. It is no exaggeration to say that Redfall has one of the worst final boss encounters in a game. Honest, the final boss is just holding X at three points, and you win. There is no fighting if you are quick enough. Twenty hours later and the bottom falls out and you just have to hold X.

Still, even after everything I can’t say Redfall is wholly a failure. Sure, the game is a mess, but it is an enjoyable mess. There is a good time here and I honestly wouldn’t mind playing more of it, even if they don’t fix it. It would be a wonderful Halloween game, but what will really captivate anyone back to this by October?

Arkane is just stuck at a crossroads. Either they pump more money in for a course correction and after a few years the game has its cult audience that never really justifies the cost but maybe makes folks more kind to Arkane for doing right by the final product or it is dropped and left to haunt the memories of the people who hold onto this stuff as ammunition in any gamer debate for years to come. A dire fate for any game.

I don’t think Arkane wanted to release Redfall like this. There clearly is a story here that echoes the halls of famous “game development is hard” stories because game development is hard. It remains a miracle that any game ever ships and sometimes a developer just ships a bad game.

I toughed it out for a few hours, having convinced myself it was at least a passable "brain off" game à la Borderlands but ultimately bailed.

Redfall (the town) was amazing to scamper about in, though - beautifully realised King-ian small-coastal-town. I love rummaging through people's homes.

I don't have too much history with Arkane but I have Xbox Gamepass so I though I'd see how bad it really is and oh my god this game is so boring and forgettable. No cutscenes, terrible AI, boring story, shitty gameplay, and mobile game UI.

I hope Arkane isn't stuck making dull looter shooters and can go back to making immersive sims.

it honestly just makes me sad, i respect the amount of work put into this and i absolutely adore Arkane's other work, but it feels like redfall just fell flat.

I've seen rumours that Bethesda redistributed resources during Redfall's development to get Starfield out the door, and honestly after playing Redfall I can totally believe that.

Redfall has the bones of something great, but the world feels empty and the game-play feels unrealised. It just feels so different to every other Arkane game, and not in a good way. It feels stripped back. It feels like i'm playing an early access release of the game, like i can see this becoming something very cool and fun, but at the moment it's too full of glitches and bugs to really see that vision.

I still want to try and finish it, because I wanna give it a fair chance, so maybe this opinion will change once I've given it a couple of more hours. At this point though, I'm not loving it.
