Fun, simple game. Not much else to say about it. The soundtrack is great, and honestly probably a big reason I kept playing. The constant spinning motion at the core of the gameplay really keeps your attention glued to the screen, but the level design is a little too simplistic to make it mentally engaging. It’s a solid time waster, but probably not the most memorable or interesting.

I decided to play this game in preparation for Wonder, and I’m so glad I did. I didn’t expect to like this game very much, but it’s probably my favorite 2d platformer now. It feels like I’m doing this game a disservice by taking a break from replaying it to play Wonder. The movement in this game feels perfect, I absolutely love the way the momentum can be used to make insane jumps. The levels feel so unique and varied, even without changing up much visually at all. I feel like this game does so much with so little, and it really pushes its simple gameplay to the max. The theater theming is also pretty cool, even if a little subtle. My only complaint really is the bosses. It’s such a boring fight, and I hate how much it’s repeated. Other than those anticlimaxes, the levels were pretty much flawless. I used save states with NSO so that I could take breaks (only saved at the beginning of worlds), but I want to go back and play through in one sitting/with no continues. I feel pretty confident if I do that I’ll only love this game even more, so I’m comfortable giving it a 4.5/5 stars.

This game invented the formula Zelda followed for the next 26 years, and it’s easy to see why. It’s such a satisfying, no bull-shit adventure game. The dungeons are great, the map is fun to explore with plenty of rewards, the combat is tight, it’s all been said before. On my first play through there were several frustrating puzzles/combat that really sullied my experience. For now those frustrations keep the game at a 4/5 stars for me, but I’m itching to replay and I only expect it to go higher.
