Sights & Sounds
Top tens are impossible, yes, but I’d like to follow Guillermo Del Toro’s word when he says that a Sight and Sound list tells you exactly “where you are at this moment in your film life.” I’ve never played as much nor as many games as I did in 2022 and - along with the turmoil of real life, the joy and the near-death experiences - the act of play itself has rekindled my love for the medium. A list is never just about the quality of a game, it’s also a statement, a way for its author to entrench their aesthetic sensibilities, prophetize and bash the rest in equal measure, share an anecdotal take that's left a mark or maybe just write a love letter in fewer - or longer - words, pretend it’s just about the medium for medium’s sake when really we wear these games on our sleeves. So I’ll admit, my Sight and Sound is explicitely about my expression of self through experiential values and the cornerstones in this voyage. Some go way back to before I even knew what kind of person I wanted to be in the world, it was Combat Evolved before even wondering what it meant to point a rifle at mangled oppositions, while others simply crashed on my headtop as if we were always meant to encounter each other. I wish Nocturne had graced my PS2 when I was nine. Here is a slight attempt at historicity, too, which I anticipate to grow as my gaps in knowledge get filled with emulation and CRT filters, my way of saying sorry for spending 2000 hours inside Destiny.
