something about the gba's limitations lend themselves well to this specific kind of punk rock weirdness. i definitely like the cuter, ko takeuchi-flavored recent games a lot but something about this "ugly" first entry appeals to me.

like if freaked and jet set radio had a baby or something

on god i knew something special was in store when i landed that first hit on a foot solider

Many parts of Sonic Frontiers annoyed me. Its clunkiness is really something you'll have adjust to, the mini-bosses are filled with padding, and the gameplay loop could get tedious if the Memory Token requirements get high. However, the act of actually manuevring Sonic through the vast lands and fast-paced levels within them is so fun - plus, the game is overall elevated to high heights by its unapologetically cool presentation. Sonic is now being put through the wringer with butt rock playing the background, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

look i'm not gonna pretend this game is the scourge of the earth. i'm also not gonna pretend i have anything new to say about it. it's the incredibly middling end result of sonic team being pressured to make something shippable in time for christmas. it has more focus on spectacle than anything, and that would overall be fine if it didn't feel like levels were bland and tedious, and the controls weren't outright unsuited for standstill platforming.

loses a point for classic sonic's iron fortress. i'm glad sonic team is finally getting their way for frontiers, tho.

i mean yeah it's still great, despite some of the bosses being some ass

mm yeah this sure is a neat platformer

Massive improvement for the series, overall. Really short, but better controls, fun themes and bosses, and great graphics for Famicom make it a cool 30 minutes (if that).

It's definitely more of the first game with weird-but-fine horizontal stages thrown in there.

It's two of the best side-scrollers ever made compiled into a neat little package. There are things that it could've done better for sure, but at its core, it's still the 2 mainline Klonoa games that people love. Even with the Wii version being used as a base for the first game, one could argue that it's better for newcomers than the PS1 version.

Special shout-out to Lunatea's Veil, which already takes what made the first game work gameplay and story-wise and builds upon it greatly, for being one big journey for Klonoa healing through his own trauma from Door to Phantomile.

i have a ps5 now :)

it's the sony "i clapped" video game and i wouldn't have it any other way. this equally feels like a tech demo for the ps5's potential mario odyssey equivalent as much as it does for the ps5 itself and the dualsense (which is quickly becoming my favorite controller ever)
