Without a doubt the best one of these I've played so far let me tell you now. The story is un-fucking-matched, I don't think it gets as ridiculous as 2's but it's so focused and pretty well-written for what it is. Lan throws MegaMan at a guy's head and also jumps out of the second story window of a hospital, literally how can this not be a 10/10.
The music? Wonderful, best ost of the first trilogy. The dungeons, while definitely not amazing (at this point that might just be a trend with this series), are the best yet. I especially love the hospital scenario, it's a legitimately good chapter with high stakes. Same for the final act, that finale is so damn good.
If this were the final game in the series, I think this would be the ideal sendoff for this cast and world. But alas, there are 3 more.

Absolutely wonderful game. My highlights were easily the distant future, imperial china, and final chapters. I liked the near future one too though mostly because it made the mecha fan in me clap. This one's a keeper.

I wouldn't call this one BAD per se, played it through the legacy collection. I think it's good, and the characters are great and whatnot, but the dungeons were easily the weakest part of this game IMO, and there are alot of those.
The story also feels really disconnected, you can do villain of the week while also progressing the plot as later games show, but this one kinda fumbles and JUST feels like it only does the latter. Still pretty good, but the sequels are miles better.

Man, what a massive improvement overall from the first game. A better, more focused story, way better dungeon design (still a little eh, but at least it's not Elecman and his battery bullshit.), and the tweaks to the battle system by adding the style mechanic is great. I liked this one alot.
On the subject of the story this story gets insane in comparison to the first game oh my god it opens up with a dude GASSING A CHILD FOR RANSOM MONEY AND THEN THE SECOND CHAPTER THEY TRY BLOWING UP A DAM AND FLOOD THE ENTIRE REGION?? THE END OF THE GAME THEY FREEZE THE INTERNET WHICH WAS USING A PROGRAM TO KEEP THE PLANET FROM GETTING RAVAGED BY NATURAL DISASTERS???? I LOVE THIS GAME.

this and ark of napishtim, these are great rpgs with tight controls and fun bosses, easy recommend
