Shame because Blinx had huge mascot potential, just needed something a bit more accessible to everyone. John Halo is fine, but he's not a cat. Just not a fan of more serious mascots like him, personally. They gotta be scrimblos like Blinx.

I remember for years I thought this wasn't all that bad, but the thing is I never got halfway into it. And it is just ok at best if all you're doing is checking it out. Just once you actually decide to beat it, that's when it sucks. Experiencing the whole game for yourself just isn't ideal imo. Play like an hour at most, then watch the rest if you really want to. Please don't suffer.

Usually people tend to like sequels more as time goes on, I know people usually say 2 or 3 is the best (4 for me). And a lot of that has to due with more being added, simplicity making the older not as good. If anything, the simplicity in this one is what makes it 2nd best for me. After playing so much 5 and recently playing through 2-4 again, it's just nice going back to this. It's just races and showcases. There's speed traps and zones, but they're not really necessary. Only bonus boards are discounts for parts. It's just very simple and to the point. I miss that tbh.

Also I know I'm anti-corporate, but I like how this had real brands and stuff sponsoring races. Like it just made the world feel more alive. Like not having the sponsors nowadays just makes the series feel even more corporate somehow. Idk.

I'm sorry, I just don't get the nostalgia and all behind this one. Like it's not bad, definitely a good game. But it's not really series peak or anything to me. I remember liking it way more when it came out, but I think the age is showing for me.

I've beaten it twice before and, as of writing this, just tried to get through it again. I can't be bothered to, though. I wish I could 100% understand why it's not great to me, but I know one thing. It feels like it tries way too hard to let you know you can go off road now. Every single tournament has at least 1 cross country or off road race of some sort. Even if you're driving the least sensible car for it. I'm tired. Give me races that match the cars. I don't wanna go offroad in a Ford GT40.

also dont like the map tbh

Reviewing DLC separately as to have no impact on my thoughts on the base game.

That being said, it's a huge step up from 2 imo. The biggest upside for me was being able to use any car for any race/championship. Complete freedom. That and a much more engaging map. Really everything is a lot more polished. Only a shame this was the last title with bucket lists. I kinda liked that feature.

Only downsides after replaying this after spending so much time in 4 and 5 is that traffic/drivatars don't ghost in speed/drift zones. Even then, it's more of a minor gripe since you get kinda used to it again. That and (this is a bigger issue in 4 and 5, but it shows a series weakness) the ending is extremely anticlimactic. It just ends after the last showcase. You don't need to do every race or upgrade every festival to level 5. This game unfortunately started Horizon's trend of pretty bad endings. Like even 2 wasn't great, but it was at least after winning a tournament. It felt like it had more purpose.

Only reason this rates 1 star lower than 4 for me is that 4 was a very right time, right place game for me. Plus I was able to look past all its flaws since I always played these games solo anyways. Not one for multiplayer/online stuff. So I felt like 4 just had more for me.

Still, really good to revisit this one every few years.

Barely any memory of this since the first time I played it at launch, I just remember beating it and being like "yeah that was ok".

Much worse the 2nd time tbh. Like I got to round 7, saw it went up to 11 rounds, then gave up. Like with not so great snow physics on a tiny ass map (50 roads in this one) with blizzards that happen at random outside of races. Just wasn't fun for me tbh. Only going halfway with the rating since it is FH3 at least. Nowhere near as bad as the latest FH5 rally expansion either. I just got really bored getting through this one again.

Way shorter than I remember. Granted, the first time I played this I went for 100% and this time I just wanted to finish it normally.
Surprised you can even get to the final race by only doing all the stunts, bucket lists, and just like 2 races.
Really fun side thing, either way. Way better than 5's sorta lifeless attempt at the same thing. Even the map for 5's HW DLC was worse imo. There's a nice charm to this one.

Reviewing DLC separately as to have no impact on my thoughts on the base game.

After a 2nd playthrough, yeah this one's still the best imo.
I want to state again that I pretty much avoided all online play in every Horizon game, so most issues people had with this one were ones I never really experienced.
So, as a singeplayer only experience, this is the best it's ever been to me. Solid set of races, stories/businesses are pretty good (bad writing aside, but it's a racing game so I don't expect good writing), collectibles and activities (speed traps, jumps, etc.) are all easy enough. Like to me this is just better 3. Even the map is my favorite.
Although, after doing every race, showcase, etc. everything that you /can/ do solo. I'm not sure which part was the ending tbh. Which, given how 3 ended, is kinda better? Like 3's ending was a bit anticlimactic after it was just the last showcase.
Still, this game was very much a right time, right place sorta deal for me. Like 2018 was a very good year for me in terms of discovering myself, progressing as a person and all. So having this there with me throughout 2018-2021(? up until Forzathon stopped adding new cars) made it very planted in my mind. Especially in late 2018-19. So maybe my sorta recent nostalgia bias is hitting hard, but I can't deny 5 has been a major downgrade.

also tbh it really was ghosting traffic in speed/drift zones that saved this the most ngl

EDIT BECAUSE I FORGOT TO MENTION IT:
Since I played this on XSX, it had enhancements. Maybe it's just me but this game even looks better than FH5 in some areas. Not all around by any means, but definitely certain areas. Especially the colors/saturation. Like 5 just always looked a more desaturated to me, like the life was being sucked out of it. This one definitely still feels lively.

2nd playthrough and I don't remember this being as good as it was. Again, maybe just my FH4 bias, but I had nothing but a good time playing through this again.
The occasional storms were nowhere near as annoying as the blizzards in 3's expansion, the progression felt good with better rewards (1mil for finding a treasure chest each round and some new to this DLC cars with some of them), all good races and stunts, really good map for what it set out to do, new drift story (which I really appreciate since I love drifting in this, and no overly bs bonus boards or anything. It's just solid. More FH4 with the addition of that story I mentioned, treasure chests, and trailblazers.
Treasure chests and trailblazers did come back in 5, but the chest in 5 are just to progress towards the latest Forzathon car and don't give much of a reward. And then the trailblazers in 5 also just didn't feel as good as they did here. Really nailed it their first time with them. Still, it seems the drift road in this really inspired them to give us better drift roads (like the mountain) in 5. So that's something.
Great vibes in this expansion all around, not too long either.

I originally had this at 4.5. Now 2.5, this was way worse than I remembered. Also gave up on it near the end. I got to the point where I finished the first (yes, there's 2 of them) Goliath and the next part was unlocking the UFO for the house. I just couldn't be bothered once I saw what came later was the Second Goliath (2 laps of the existing one) and a winner's trophy to unlock after that.
Like so many of the challenges are so tedious and grindy that even reading their requirements made me feel exhausted. It just didn't feel worth it going that far a second time. Definitely not something I'd recommend 100%'ing, but just messing around in for a bit can be fun for a while.
Still, nowhere near as good as Fortune Island. My FH4 bias really doesn't help this one. It just felt kinda boring.
Also, I do not agree with "it's bad because it's Lego". While I can see how it's a detriment to the map in some ways, I never thought the branding was what ruined it. I think it's just not very fun.

Kinda mediocre DLC aside, this one is definitely good. Just not great.
Like yeah, not as good as the rest, but not bad either. As of mid 2023, it seems they're slowly picking up on decent updates and all. But this one's been pretty average to me tbh.
The map was a huge personal letdown for me. Like too much of it just feels like the same farms repeated. What small towns/city areas are around are fine, but it feels very nature forward.
Also probably the buggiest one so far, but like I said, it's getting slightly better. Maybe it's just placebo idk what they actually fixed tbh. I only play solo/offline so it's really just been a "time to unlock the weekly cars" thing.
Really just the biggest lack of soul/character in this one. It feels corporate in all the wrong ways. Like they just wanted to ship out a game, so they did. And, even though I gave 4 a 5/5, that's kinda sad seeing something even more lifeless than 4.
Not much grand they can do since the 2 big expansions have already been put out, but I hope this game makes some kinda comeback and comes to its end stronger in some way. Since FH titles tend to just kinda end once the next FH title is out. Like they'll stop giving out new cars in Forzathon, slowly stop Forzathon, and then the last title just kinda exists. Like, please at least just do something fun with this before Motorsport comes out.

I can see how this would appeal to some people, but I don't think rally just means "take the base game offroad races, add way too many switchbacks to each race, and make it a 1 person race with co-driver callouts to sell the point even further.". Like it just felt very lazy to me. Even on top of that, 100% requires you to do every race Twice. By the time you've 100%'d it, it kinda just feels like they reshaped the main map into something much smaller and was like "look its rally go have fun".

Idk maybe it's just that FH5 itself was already the most disappointing Horizon game to me so far, but this especially was just boring.

Ignoring multiplayer/online for this review as I don't really care to try it.
Also correct me if it's not completed, I beat every tour on Builder's Cup (save for open tour since it rotates monthly) and nothing else showed up so I honestly have no idea if that's all singleplayer gives you outside of monthly events or what.

Either way, I'll repeat "built from the ground up". What this game was marketed with.
It wasn't built from the ground up, this is just F7 again when you play singleplayer. I've heard online is a much different experience, though.
Singleplayer, however, is kinda lame tbh. There's only one cup and then the rest is a couple cups that cycle out monthly, with each part of it being unlocked weekly. No little bonus challenges, minigames, etc. like in 7. Just race after race. Only racing. Not many tracks as of now, either. Really wore itself thin very early on. It's all just very repetitive for a Forza game.
As for bugs and all, idk I didn't really see any. Just a flickering texture for a second every now and then. It's really all just a game as a whole issue for me. Like it does control well and all, but it's hard to have fun when there's not really progression for singleplayer now aside from leveling up cars (which also wasn't executed very well here).

idk this is just disappointing more than anything

Technically completed, I did 100% the arcade mode, which isn't too much of a task. The main issue comes with the career mode not having a real final tournament or anything. So I got about 40% through career mode and gave up since the progression really starts to wear itself thin once you get endurance races unlocked. Insanely long career mode, too.

Not so great career progression aside, it works. Would've been a really good time for XBox users in 05 for sure, but with all the future titles there's not too much reason to play through this one other than curiosity or nostalgia. Good handling, good selection of cars for it being the only OG XBox Forza, difficulty felt kinda sporadic but oh well.

It's pretty good, I'd probably recommend playing through arcade mode so you have more freedom. Won't have any cars you unlock through career if you do it first, but you can pick whatever's already unlocked.

Shelved this just a day in since really it's just FM1 with better visuals.
Did every arcade exhibition race except the Nurburgring, saw arcade had time trials that unlocked cars too and didn't wanna bother. Didn't even progress in career after seeing it had the same progression.

I'd just say read my FM1 review and you got 2. Just more cars and better visuals here, more polish. I'd recommend this one over 1 in that case, even if I couldn't be bothered to do anything in it. But that's just because I have burnout from 1 still. Might revisit it someday and at least get halfway through the career.

Anyways, this game is dogshit. Yes, I rated it 3.5/5.
Imagine being in a call with your s/o and being like "huh Garfield this looks bad" and beating it in one sitting. Then doing it again in a call with your s/o and another friend.

It has some weird magic for me that can just make me and all my friends laugh at it. From the repeating dialog we get stuck repeating ourselves to the One Song Just One SONG IN THE HWOLE FIUCKJMMN FUCK

Edit : I'm just now finding out it has multiple tracks and I'm not sure if the PC version either lacked them or if it was bugged and only played the ground floor music. Either way the music is kinda not great

Leaving Online out of this review because I think it's absolute ass.

Beaten many times in the past, but never 100%'d until now. Really surprising just how much you /don't/ have to do to get 100%. Like there's still a decent amount left to the game if you do only the necessary for 100% stuff. Coulda done without having to win once at every sport, but oh well.

Not much to say for the game as a whole that hasn't been said. It's not my favorite writing, I think it does have a kinda decent blend of serious and humorous. But it definitely leans a bit too heavy on humorous and starts wearing itself thin in some areas. Like both Michael and Trevor in their entirety get a bit exaggerated, really shoving it in your face one is old and sad and one is psychotic. Franklin's written pretty safe overall, though. At least to me, certain side characters even had better moments. Just a weird mixed bag to me in terms of the story and writing. Really hope VI improves there.

Gameplay I'll always stand by tho, it's all solid. Driving, flying, shooting, everything works. Flying was especially a nice improvement after IV's sorta awkward helicopter controls. Kinda happy if VI takes the 2 character approach, though. Especially since, by the end, I was really only sticking to one character. It's pretty easy to leave one or two completely out of it once you're not doing the main missions. People also say IV had way better driving, that's subjective. More realistic I can agree with, but I feel like GTA doesn't really need driving to feel that heavy and realistic. Especially in crowded cities. Like honestly I'd be fine with VI keeping everything V had, but with whatever polish they (hopefully) bring so it doesn't feel like more of the same.

Graphics are also another thing I see people say hasn't aged well. Maybe on the last 2 gens, but I feel PC still holds up pretty well. Idk I'm not one to talk much on graphics, if the game is fun then the graphics are just a nice thing to tack onto it. Worst I can really say is how you start to see the same face in every character. This is way worse Online, which I said I wouldn't mention, but, where every single character has the exact same face and you cannot unsee it.

Overall, definitely not my favorite, but still an amazing game. Something that'd be hard to forget for everything new it did at the time and the unfortunate legacy of Online.

Think of this like a car. It's got a new coat of paint, just don't pay attention to the missing bumpers. Or the missing side panels.

There's really not /too/ much missing here, but it's still weird when you realize how stripped down this is compared to 1 so far. Like I have hope they'll eventually add a lot more in and just work on it, but as of now I just feel a bit conflicted. Like it is a good game, but I feel like they probably weren't ready to put it out just yet.

Like let's look past how amazing this game is and how horrible I am at certain puzzles so I have to use a walkthrough every time I play through it. Like I've beaten this maybe 4-5 times since I got it in 2015. It doesn't bother me that I need that aid. This is probably my favorite environment + music combo in a game. This is one of those games I give the "Doom 3 effect". Like it's good, but is it really what the series originally was? It definitely captures it, but it feels so different. Obviously way more polished and all since MM2 was starting to look a bit dated by 2003.
The real highlight, imo, is how it actually has more of a story mode to it. One for each city. It's a lot more narrated and over the top weird. Still, not bad. Shame it had to Xbox only since modding is what made MM1 and 2 so great imo.

I was way into this from 2008-2011. Didn't touch it much at all until just recently this year I decided to see what people could do with it.
Like yeah it's impressive what people can do with Lua scripting and all that now. But it really takes away the charm it had in 2008-11. Maybe I'm just old and miss it idk.

This is coming from someone who thinks Saints Row 2 is a 5/5 game and the best in the series (not too familiar with 1 tho). Even playing a lot of 3 and 4.

I don't get the hate. Someone's gonna see the 5 star rating and just say it's bias and yeah kinda. But to me I thought the writing here was good. Like a good mix of 2 and 3. Even the gameplay just being like 3 but better. As far as bugs go, I didn't see any and I 100%'d this. Maybe it's different on PC given I did it on XSX but idk. Still I think people should give this more of a chance once they get past whatever bugs there are. Also, at least imo, the writing is nowhere near as bad as 3 and 4 just being like Borderlands/Adult Swim bait. Like just random adult humor for the sake of being random. This game still has /some/ of that, but it didn't feel like they were shilling out to a tv channel.

Also I see "they talk about student loans too much"
they mention it like twice. calm down.

Adding a bit to the end now that all the DLC is out and Volition shut down:
All of the DLC was dogshit. Like extremely disappointing, but honestly kinda relieving to know this game is /done/ done. Sad Volition shut down, but, as far as I can tell. Both Deep Silver and Gearbox (scary) still have the rights to the series. At this point I just hope they can finish the SR2 PC patch. Either way, I still really like the base game here. Just don't get the DLC.

Slightly better missions than the heist DLC, but still really underwhelming aside from the map expansion.
Like before, it's just a solid map expansion that unfortunately only sees use with DLC missions and some activities/collectibles like the last.

Shame the game might end this way. The base game is still a personal 5/5, but they really screwed up on every single DLC.

It's just the Murder Circus mission from the base game but now you get to do it over and over. Unlocking weapons and perks as you go. Also there's 4 characters to play as and all of them can go up to level 9.

I mean maybe it's fun if you really liked that one mission, but this felt really unnecessary. Like I got one character to level 4, got tired of doing the same shit over and over, and gave up.

I'm fine with this ruining me getting every achievement tbh. If it sucks, it sucks. Just a shame the first DLC story and this one weren't great given how much I loved the base game.

Missions weren't all that great, but at least the new part of the map was amazing. Sucks that it only really got used for this.

More advanced nowadays than people might think. Just that a lot of new people end up finding a lot of old bad stuff.
Which there's still a lot of.
It's a mess. You just gotta know where to look.

I bought this on sale like an hour before it became free on Steam. Honestly ok with that since it's both support to an indie dev and support to something this fun to just get lost in.
It's nice having something where getting lost isn't a problem.

I wish I could rate this twice so I could rate both the Genesis and SNES versions since they're a bit different.
Like I'd give the Genesis version a 1.5 and the SNES version a 1.

Genesis version : I honestly don't hate it, it just doesn't hold much. It's fun to show a friend to laugh at or play through every few years maybe. Has more fights than the SNES version and offers a bit more of a challenge.

SNES version : It just has less. Like less in general.

Actually loved this on my first playthrough and had it at 4.5 at first.
Second playthrough was when I realized you can get through it in like 2 hours if you hard focus on it and it's not a fun 2 hours either. But hey you can make your character look like a gamer with a thousand yard stare after witnessing a public beheading so that's cool I guess

Being dead honest, I've barely played the modern version of this so this rating isn't really much for it.
I played A Lot of this around 2006-10 tho, maybe even earlier. At least early enough that Knuckles still had the really fucked up wall climbing sprites and jumping on the roof of that house in the first level sent you to hell. Also remember Zim's house being an official mp level in it and spending a lot of time on servers running that.
Still had an insane amount of fun with all the mods and hangout servers back then tho.

Gave up on the Golden Capital Act 2 boss fight, so really I only had like 5 levels left after that. But, I was not having a good time even from the beginning. I think the looks sold me on this game, and that's all there was to it. Just the looks. The controls weren't horrible, but it was a matter of how fun it was to play. It wasn't. I know the levels did have some branching paths, but even then it still managed to feel oddly linear for a 2D Sonic game. That and some levels lasted way longer than they needed to. Every act 1 had an extra boss, so there was a boss each level and all of those were just as bad. Especially the Golden Capitol one I gave up on that was a 5 minute autoscroller that reset to the beginning if you died. So just a mix of shit levels, shit bosses, not much feeling of accomplishment after everything lasts way longer than it should, and another problem I haven't seen many people mention, the camera being a bit too close to the screen. Idk, I think I'm just even more disappointed after expecting a 2D Sonic game to be decent. Like even my least favorites (SA2 (sorry), CD (also sorry), and Shuffle) have more redeeming factors than this. It just felt like they knew Mario Wonder was in the works before it got announced and were like "hey we can make that too". Didn't work out too well imo.

I swear to god I've beaten this game 3 times and can only remember like 3 levels from it. Each time I played it again, I didn't remember well over half of it.
Like being unmemorable is one thing, but to the point where I question if I'd even beat it before those other 2 times? Is this game real? Did I hallucinate this?

I'm so conflicted with this one. Like I've been playing it since 2014 iirc. I remember even enjoying the early access version more, just exploring planets with no real goal and building shit.

Something about the full game and having a story you can easily beat. Idk, like after I beat it I was just like "ok now what". And that's it. Now what? You can mod it, but imo (and most other peoples' from what I've seen) it just gets boring fast af.

I'd have to play it again to really know (and I don't want to), but this was my first N64 game.
I played this at a friend's house when I was like 8 and even then I wasn't sure how he found the N64 amazing since this was what he had to show for it.
This and DK64, which I'm also not too familiar with and I know it's better than this. But dude could've gave me any other game for a better first impression.

I know you can do it in any Valve game and a lot of other FPS's, but there's something special about looking at someone, both stopping dead in your tracks and staring at each other for like 5 seconds, then violently shaking the mouse up and down then moving on

I hate this ending so fucking much
You just win the final tournament and there's a cutscene of your characters stiff ass face just saying like I Win :)

then you get a car you can easily buy at any point in the game fuck you

Anyways it's pretty fun to progress through and all. Maybe tiring and repetitive after a while, but it gets the job done.
Also the maps (2 of them) are huge holy shit

It's hard for me to express just how much I love this game. Like even from the demo on the first XBox Exhibiton Demo Disc. I've been with this game since Day 1. I didn't even know this was a series back then, like I just assumed that 3 was a weird symbol.

I can see why a lot of people wouldn't like this game for how weird and annoying it can be with all of its characters and music tho. Still, this came out when I was 5 and I've been doing yearly playthroughs of it since. Sometimes more than once a year.

So much I ended up loving the whole series, got all the cutscenes from this game uploaded to my YT channel on top of beta/scrapped scenes, got the Dreamcast beta files on hand and 4 prototypes for Xbox that were leaked recently. Checked all those for differences. Like I've done everything I can with this game and I still don't get tired of it. Like the amount of excitement I had when I found out Xemu could run this so I could finally stream it for my partner.

Anyways, it's only a little bit like 1 in that you walk around levels, pick up presents to use, and get to the elevator. Just more to it. There's objectives for each level and enemies to "Funkify". Just 2 boss fights and minigames in between. Vinyls that act sorta like stars in SM64. I guess you could call it a collectathon, but I think it keeps itself fresh enough. Every character has their own special attributes, too. Even 3 DLC characters you can get through the 2nd XBox Exhibition Demo Disc. It's repetitive, yes. But, I'm biased and it's fun. At least try it. This one was buried by Sega and they really made sure nobody remembered this series save for the first game. Really did the whole series dirty. And if you do try it and like it, god forbid you tell me you like it. I can talk about this series for Hours.
