I adored the studio's previous game, THE MESSENGER, so I was keen to back this on KS. It's beautiful, sounds great, but damn is it lacking in the story and writing. There's nothing new here plotwise, which would be fine if it weren't for Garl. I found him so insanely annoying that it was honestly a struggle to continue once he joined the party.
Got a bit over halfway through (Autumn Hills, which just reminded me how great The Messenger is) before coming to terms with the fact that the battle system wasn't going to get any more interesting, nearly every cutscene featuringGarl being Garl repelled me, and it was time to hang it up.
Beautifully rendered, lovely soundtracks, repellent character. A damn good effort considering their first game was a great riff on Ninja Gaiden!

Phenomenal in all the ways you've heard. It's commendable the way the new arc is woven into Royal, but that last act still feels like something that would have been left on the cutting room floor.
By the time I got into that final semester, I was tiring of the stupendous battle system and kicking the difficulty down to progress the story. I don't have the time or desire to grind like the good ol days.
Still, the stories it tackles, the characters, the sheer design of the thing, are nothing short of incredible. AND THAT SOUNDTRACK!
