Second favorite mainline Dragon Quest game! I played a fan translation and I think they did a good job preserving the classic Dragon Quest tone. The scale of the plot is really awesome, you don't often see games where you play through like 30 years of your character's life

love the character switching, chapter system thingy. really fun characters and it's cool to see their stories converge. first dragon quest game that i'd describe as "minimally grindy"

Really cute, i love to see how this game's DNA was worked into DQIX (my favorite entry in the series)

very interesting from the perspective of being the first jrpg, however that really shows in every possible way (uninteresting, linear progression, flat combat, arduous leveling). none of that kept me from beating the game and maxing my xp, however. i definitely recommend this game for jrpg fans, but i wouldn't play it without an emulator with a fast-forward button

best dragon quest game hands-down! have been replaying it on my ds (first played when i was like 12 or something) and it still holds up. sooo wild that there hasn't been a port or remake of this one yet

didn't really enjoy as much as dark souls, will have to give it another try again because the story and art direction are incredible

Really dope game, want to go back to it cuz it was extremely hard and I never even got past the first level, but the aesthetic and concept of it is just so rad

just absolutely insanely compelling in every possible way.. play the bedazzled edition if your computer can run it (even at like, 20fps it's worth, just the most stunning look ever)

genuinely so inspiring as a walking sim, so good at making u feel specific emotions,,, the sense of progression via item pickups was genius

Glad there's open source recreations so I could play it, never did as a kid. It like sucks but also is so charming
