February 12th 2009. That was the last numbered street fighter game I could confidently say I gave a shit about. Street fighter 5 came and went, It got better in the end but never shook off the image it cultivated fully from it's abysmal launch. In all that time I just kept playing a bunch of third strike (love that game to death) so you can imagine my skepticism when this game was revealed. I sat there and watched the reveal live and i'll be honest at the time I fucking popped off more for the fact that super puzzle fighter 2 turbo was getting ported to modern systems and pc then sf6. I just kinda stared at Ryu and Luke and went "yeah thats street fighter". Then the first big showcase of the game happens I can't remember off the top of my head when that happened. That was when the game won me, seeing the fact that sf was heading back to an older urban style that third strike went for definitely appealed to me but also the fact that street fighter looked like it had style again. Yea sure sfv had an artstyle but it felt so incredibly sterile compared to what's on offer here. With the giant splashes of color and the meticulously designed characters and world. This is what I've been waiting for. With other games for the past few years taking up my interest when it comes to this genre like guilty gear rev 2 or a series I always go back to which is my beloved KOF series. I can confidently say capcom has pulled me all the way back in. With such a snappy feeling game that oozes with style and personality, to the responsive online and amazing online systems (seriously I enjoy strive but fuck you arcsys your online lobby system is fucking garbage). It is so addicting to just play this game, to just constantly hit rematch and go "we go again fuck it". The world tour is such a nice little rpg mode that twists the fighting game formula. I don't think it's the best campaign ever made or anything but I thoroughly enjoyed playing through all of it. With being reminded of just how fucking goofy these games and their world is. Also enjoy the abundance of final fight references. Capcom continues to pump out hits lately and as a long time capcom fan it is so rewarding to be here for it. This is definitely going to be my go to fighting game for the near future. Dates of played are for how long it took to finish world tour. This game is worth your 60$

i was very apprehensive about this game early on. a lot of small things were bothering me, combat felt a little odd, the camera was annoying, and overall it just felt janky and bad! i was pretty close to quitting honestly, once i ran out of yellow orbs and realized that mechanic i almost decided it wasn’t for me and gave up. i didn’t though, and i’m really glad i didn’t cause after the initial awkward starting phase this game was really fun! once i got ifrit i was struggling significantly less and the game made a lot more sense to me and it was pretty easy and fun the rest of the way through.

the combat is pretty simple but it’s pretty satisfying, ifrit especially feels super satisfying and really opened the game up to me. that and understanding devil trigger and the moves you can buy. the game being so short works in its favor because i can see the combat and gameplay getting super repetitive if it tried to pad out game time but it was like a 4/5 hour experience and that felt like the perfect length.

enemy variety and bosses were not amazing but nothing stood out as obnoxiously bad either. i wish there was some more enemy types and especially bosses to change things up. i liked most of the bosses and to the games credit they do get new moves and patterns each interaction but it doesn’t change the fact that there are like 4 bosses you fight 3 times each. the final boss was new and super fucking cool though, the dumb insane demon transformation starfox section was sick.

the game looks and sounds great, the locations are decently varied considering you just kinda run around the same mansion for 90% of the game but it can get a bit stale and samey occasionally. the whole structure of the game is really odd, it feels like it really doesn’t want to be mission based and yet it still is. it leads to some odd missions where you kind of just go to an area to pick up a key, and backtrack to where you initially were to use the key and the mission ends. it’s not a huge deal or anything it just made me think the whole idea of mission structure was kinda odd.

overall a really solid first entry to a series i foresee myself really enjoying! i was expecting a lot more jank and dogshit but it was a pretty good time once i got past the initial hurdle. gold orbs are still a shit mechanic though, no video game should have lives!

yea it sucks. i came into it knowing it would suck, i had been told by friends, the internet, even capcom themselves that this game sucked and didn't really matter. it made me assume going into this game that it was an unbearable piece of garbage. i wanted to play it myself to see what was up, partly because i was curious but also because i like to play every game in a series generally. it isn't that unbearable piece of garbage, but man is it fucking BORING!

it kind of lulls you into a false sense of security right away. the controls and camera are universally improved upon. jumping feels better, the double jump isn't locked to a sword upgrade, you can wall run which is pointless but looks kinda cool, there's a dodge roll button that isn't locked to when you have guns trained on an enemy. this all seems good, until you kinda just keep playing. the lock-on system is frustrating as hell. you don't manually turn it on, and you can't swap who you're locked on to. sometimes that doesn't matter but there's multiple segments where it's incredibly frustrating and feels terrible.

the combat as a whole is just so fucking boring. it seems there's some way to do other moves but it's not explained whatsoever and felt entirely random when a new move would happen. the bosses are a huge low point, the best bosses in this game are tolerable but the worst are some of the most boring and lame bosses ever. it's not super difficult or anything they are just so lazy and boring.

the story is nothing, dante is way less fun and generally way more boring here. the coin twist was stupid but at least kinda funny i guess. the game looks okay, i was hopeful the locations would get a bit more interesting since they weren't locked to 1 castle the whole game but it's a lot of insanely boring and way too open city locations.

it's not a broken or terrible piece of garbage, but it's also just a huge step down and so incredibly boring the whole way through. trismagia is the worst boss ever also.

god this game made playing the other 2 feel so fucking worth it. it owns so absurdly hard. before i get into the deep dive specifics i just had such a fun time. the 4.5 star is a little more preemptive than anything, i have like 3 more games i have played and i wanna see if any of them exceed this in a big way. it's a tall fuckin order but from what i've heard about V you never know!

the first thing that stands out about this game is the story and cutscenes compared to the other games. it's significantly more pronounced, and while the actual story isn't anything incredibly special the way it's presented is so fucking over the top action movie insane that it's a joy to get to any cutscene. the opening cutscene might be one of my favorite opening cutscenes in any game it's so fucking over the top and it rips so insanely hard. the whole game has that absurd feeling but the intro especially encapsulates it perfectly. dante is at his peak as a silly little dork with a ton of stupid one liners and trying way too hard to look cool... it works though he's so fucking cool LOL. virgil is a fun addition as like an actual character now, arkham/jester is the best villain of the 3 games i've played so far, and lady is a significant step up from trish and lucia. it isn't winning any awards for writing but god the cutscenes are just so insanely fun to watch that it was a big highlight for sure.

visually this game looks pretty great! i played the HD version, which is hard to judge how much of it looks good because of that but it seems really impressive this was on the ps2. the biggest visual aspect i appreciated was how varied the locations are. you revisit some areas briefly and some rooms are kinda reused but overall there's so much more variance in the locations and visuals of the areas that was a breath of fresh air. the way hell looks in this game is pretty breathtaking and super cool to run through.

controls and general gameplay systems are realistically at their best here. lock-on was fixed from 2, and most other moves are retained and are the best they've felt so far. the red orb system still isn't my favorite way of obtaining upgrades/items but it works the best here for me. you get a good amount of red orbs so you can spread it out a good bit but it still is limiting and discourages experimenting with upgrades to your weapons and such. the style system is overall solid, but because you can only swap at statues it's kinda hard to justify swapping around styles because you feel committed to one when you select it. i think it would be nicer if the EXP required to level up styles was significantly lower, i stuck with swordmaster almost the entire game and didn't fully level it up until like mission 17/18 of 20. otherwise the style system is really cool and i for sure wanna replay the new switch version that lets you swap styles/weapons anywhere with the dpad because that sounds like a massive improvement.

the last bit and obviously best part is the gameplay/combat. holy shit does this game feel phenomenal to play. it brings back the general combat style of devil may cry 1 but significantly faster and with way more variety. the very first thing i noticed was how instantly you can shoot out of combos and how seamlessly you can swap between weapons mid combo. the guns are very samey from the other 2 games, nothing super new or exciting really. the weapons are so much more fun and varied here though. each new weapon was unique and fun and it was super exciting to find a new one. my favorites by far being beowulf and agni/rudra. that's not to say the other weapons aren't fun but these just clicked the most for me, cerberus was super fun too though. just to gush a little bit beowulf especially with the swordmaster style is so fucking badass and satisfying to use it's genuinely one of my favorite beat em up weapons ever now. the simple combo of uppercutting an enemy into the air and then slamming an enemy to the ground with air raid is so insanely fun and never got tiring to me. the other big thing about the combat is the bosses and they're a massive step up here as well! there's a couple misses, arkham especially being pretty terrible but man when the bosses hit they absolutely fucking hit. agni and rudra was super fun and the second phase was so incredibly hype. the biggest standout by far are the vergil fights though. tons of games have tried the "mirror" boss idea, where there's a character that's incredibly similar to you and uses a similar moveset but usually i find they end up falling a bit short but the vergil fights in this game are the mirror match boss fight perfected. the first time he used devil trigger against me i was so hype, and him utilizing some of your moveset/showing you what you can do with some weapons (namely in the 2nd fight) is so smart and cool.

i'm very glad i finally got around to playing the devil may cry series! i knew i'd have a good time but i just kept putting it off for way too long. i promised a friend (hai alex) i'd finally give it a shot because she loves it dearly and it was a great time. i had an alright time with the first one but this is the one that truly made me understand why this series is so beloved.

this is a better game than luigi's mansion 1 to me but the ghost aren't as stupid looking so is it even really worth it...

this is not the best game ever made but it is my favorite and that's more important i think...

excellent addition to the series. i appreciated the updated graphics and improvement on existing mechanics. my main concern is the lack of meaningful updates and live events despite this literally being the most popular game when it dropped, but other than that it was pretty fucking epic...

i got a substantial amount of the way in before forgetting about this and never playing it again. something something too much grinding or whatever. but it was really fun when i was into it

I don't really feel comfortable rating this game because it is a piece of someone almost. This felt like therapy for the creator. I can just say that some stuff really connected with me. Having traumatic events followed with "no dramatic music played, I still felt the exact same as before" really hit something. The line really just made every moment so much more of a sinking feeling. I'd say play it if you can because it is an important story to hear but just know this is indeed someone recounting their trauma.
