Games that were and still are especially beloved by the Russian game playing public

Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete
Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete
Everybody my age (pushing 30) and older knows this and probably has played this. Heroes V was developed by Nival, a Russian dev team, which imo shows just how important this series is to the ruskies. There was also the King's Bounty series, now made by the Russians, although initially an American production.

The Neverhood
The Neverhood
Since gaming at large came into the country at a time of an economic crisis, after the fall of USSR and all, piracy has been an inseparable part of its culture, which means that PC was the biggest platform (and still is). Office workers staying after hours, playing whatever on their working pcs, sometimes with the tacit admission of their bosses, was a common occurence. One pirated translation of this game, widely circulated, was named as an omophone in russian (не верь в худо, believe not in ill).

Didn't know anybody with a Gameboy, this was how we played Tetris
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2
City 17 is gonna be close to any slavic person's heart really, it very successfully amalgamates visual signifiers of eastern european cities into one location
The Witcher
The Witcher
Many Polish folklore and mythic elements are close and understandable to Russian people.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Came at a time when tensions regarding immigration into Russia were high, mirroring the game's themes.
One of the most popular and contentious theories of the emergence of the state of Russia is the Norse theory, that northerners from nearby states came in to "put a stop to internal quarreling" aka conquer eastern slavic people. Hence why Russians are likely to associate themselves with vikings and such.
Ulfric Stormcloak was voiced by Sergei Chonishvili in the localization, a guy who voices fucking everything nowadays but was beloved back in the day for a flash cartoon about Cheburashka smoking a joint

You know how you find that one weird jank game and hold on to it, showing it to everybody? This is that for the entirety of Russia's gamers.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Botched pirate translations are a genre onto themselves, and this one is the crown jewel of it. People will use phrases from it without even knowing the source.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
Found it on pretty much every household PC when I was 8-9. I also had that tshirt with the bomb symbol around that same time.
Russian localization boasted translation by Goblin, an ex cop named Dmitry Puchkov made famous by his comedy dubs of famous movies like the Matrix and Lord of the Rings. He has a youtube channel now with a sizeable audience, talking pop culture and politics sometimes, which goes as well as you'd imagine.
Pole Chudes: Capital Show

The only reason I didn't include this classic was because I didn't imagine it being on IGDB, but here we are.
This game was on PCs in every school I ever went to, and I changed schools a lot. An indie game made by some guy in a restricted city, this was amazing to see. He was a professional programmer, but it still demistified a lot about game making and programming, at least for me.
There's a treasure trove of trivia about it and the show it was based on, this game is untouchable and legendary.

In case it seems otherwise, no, this list is not made in support of Russia's war on Ukraine. Putin's autocratic state is as much at war with its own people as Ukrainians, many who enjoy or have at some point games such as these are now going out to protest and then are detained, beaten and tortured.
Also, a sizable portion of these was developed in Ukraine, so yeah. War must stop. That maneater must pay.
I guess this is just me reminiscing about a period of time that has come to an end. However this all resolves, the place I grew up in is no longer there, neither in my head nor in physical reality. We can never go home.

Thanks!
Believe it or not, Cossacks: Back to War was a gift from school when I was like 11, along with Chessmaster 9000.
