2021

At this time I can't properly give this game a review. I'm trying to enjoy it, but the world and story just feel boring, empty, and slow. I don't relate and find myself not caring for the npc's or the journey the mc is embarking on.

I'll try to revisit this at a later time if only to listen to the soundtrack by japanese breakfast.

Man, this was a short, great puzzle game.

The narration and story telling is super unique, and I love the quick scaling confusion as you progress through your own mind. Even in times of seriousness the story was amazing. The scary parts were terrifying for me and the cool visuals and concepts were amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Similar to another game I reviewed, I sadly believe that going for the 100% would be more of a grind than fun, so I think I will skip out on that part.

It was fun with a couple confusing puzzles. Before the map, I got kinda lost pretty often...

Decent story and I liked that I was challenged while playing through the puzzles, but in a fun way. I beat the game, but I might come back to 100%? I feel like it would be more of a grind than anything to go for the 100% when I've already got like a 70-80% completion on my own exploration.

Very fun with friends. Somewhat repetitive.

2018

It was pretty, but way too slow. Nearly half the game, I was just looking towards the end. I enjoyed the visuals and cute little animals, but the game felt like it took forever. It is one indie game that I really don't want to replay or try to 100%.

The visual style felt unique and beautiful, but the gameplay was fairly boring with relatively easy puzzles and a fake sense of danger in what I would call "interactive cutscenes". Maybe I just didn't appreciate the art of the game enough, but I think it was just too slow.

I could listen to an argument for a 3-star rating, but nothing higher.

This is a post Relics of the Old Faith DLC Review.

This game is just barely not perfect in my opinion. There's so many amazing things with the colony sim, character interactions, interesting story, and super fun gameplay, but I felt like it started to taper off near the end. There's just little aspects here and there that, upon review, I can tell I wish were improved.

Before the end of the main story, I felt like I hit the devotion cap kinda fast. Having all of the upgrades to my base made me a little sad as I continued to progress through the rest of the game without really having a reason to change it up or add new structures. It just made me little sad to see my cult all grown up and handling life mostly on their own.

Another banger published by Devolver Digital, this game quickly shot up to be one of my favorites. Most of the progression and building is perfect, the combat is fun and different every time, and the out of combat simulation and minigames are perfect for when I need a break from killing bishops and heretics.

I really enjoyed the characters and their dialogue or growth throughout the game.

I felt the gameplay a bit too easy at first, but the second half/endgame are much more appropriate to what difficulty I was looking for.

This game is short, and I liked it.

The first half of the chambers are kinda boring, but GLaDOS makes it enjoyable. Ending is beautiful, and the challenge chambers may have been my favorite part to the entire game.

The game would've been better had it been longer.

I really love this game, but I can't make the jump to 5 stars. I honestly feel like the game could be listed at 4 stars, but it is noticeably better than Portal, which I consider a 3.5-4 star game.

As fun and entertaining this is, it didn't give me that push over the edge to 5. I finished the story, the co-op, and a few workshop maps.

Story
Funny and Exciting
I don't think it was necessarily very challenging, but it did make me think a couple times. I loved the personality that can be felt through Wheatley and GLaDOS. It is leagues above the dialogue from the first game, which is noticeably much more bland. I purposefully stopped multiple times just to listen to the turrets talk, or make sure I heard the full dialogue from Wheatley.

Gameplay
Extremely Innovative
The gels were an amazing addition that provide so much opportunity. This can really be felt in the co-op levels.
The portal gun is an icon and deservingly so. It is truly one of a kind and has inspired so many other creators to include tributes to the game.

Issue(s)
As much fun I had playing this, it felt so short. Less than 12 to casually play through the entire story, co-op mode, and even extra workshop maps feels very lackluster. There simply needed to be more content for me to reach that 5 star mark.
It is a relatively easy puzzle game. I think I was just looking for and expecting some slightly more challenging puzzles to try.

This was my first deck-builder but not my first rogue-like.

The learning curves go crazy here. I thought I was doing well at first, just to watch a YouTuber here and there and realize it's not too hard to consistently hit the final Boss.
10-15 hours in and I'd gotten a hang of most of the characters. Another 10-15 and I was able to start getting to the final fairly consistently.

I got through a couple ascensions on a few characters before slowly losing motivation for the game as I started to like others. This game is amazing, but I was just looking for something new at the time.

I think I had the most fun with The Defect, but the most success with The Silent.

I'll definitely come back to push for higher ascensions.

Fun party game to play with friends or even alone. Best played with friends, so you can all shit talk each other and screw each other with modifiers or in game.

A little grindy for more options, but cool to see that you can't just pay for more. Everyone is equal here.

I beat it.
Pretty unique and fun gameplay. Story kinda lacks, but I wasn't playing for the story anyways.

Overall, I enjoyed this game, but it had a fair share of annoying or disappointing aspects.

Overall 7/10
Gameplay - 7/10
- very cool mechanics
- hard carries the game imo
- the big mechs suck
- they throw off the speed at which the game feels good to play forcing you to slow down and think of the best approach instead of just speedy slash and dash
- the boss fights kinda suck too
- the giant cylinder boss (the first i believe) has to be my favorite, and I still think it had issues
- hel and mara were just meh
- learn a simple pattern and repeat for 2 minutes

Visuals - 6.5/10

Fun - 3/10 - 8/10
- It really just depends on the area/level on whether it's going to be super annoying mechs vs. cool platforming and dicing through enemies at light speed

Story - 5/10
the ending is dull, abrupt, and underwhelming
- I love that Jack kills both Mara and The Architect, but it happens too fast and seems to leave a bunch of plot holes behind
- the whole tower is shut down and outside it still death
- mara's creations are still running around potentially
- It's kinda there, but it's mid
- I could see the architect twist somewhat early on, as he's caught in lies so fast and tries to distract from them
- I didn't really feel myself build a connection to the story as much as I think that they wanted

Replayability - low-mid
The game somewhat forces you to play each level twice
- Once for speed
- Once for collectibles
I think the game suffers from the collectible aspect, but still having a little leaderboard showing your time and deaths at each level. To find the collectibles you have to play slow, but that isn't exactly the intended gameplay.
I think it would much better suit the game if the collectibles were placed on alternate paths that might be harder to go through, but still progress you forwards, instead of having to constantly turn around to see if there's one behind you.

Extra
I started hard mode, but it feels like a chore with randomly placed enemies making it fairly unfun to play.
The speedrun/time trial mode is really fun.
The waves mode is alright.

I really liked the design and concept of this game, but had a few issues. The story is somewhat there but a little hard to follow and understand. More frustrating than the story would be the map. More specifically, the lack of a map. It became very hard to understand where to go for certain sections of the game, not because of the puzzles which were cool, but because it was hard to tell where I've come from and where I was going at certain times. The last downside would be that several of the collectibles have to be returned to in order to grab them. I left a bunch behind not having the powers to get them and went back to grab them just for the trophy.

Overall the gameplay was very fun and unique. I also really enjoyed the sequential upgrades learning more and more through to the end of the game.

Extremely challenging. I've tried, but I've never beaten it.
