this was the second Pokemon game I recieved after my bootleg copy of Emerald, and the first one I completed. if someone brand new to Pokemon asked me which Pokemon game they should start with it'd probably be this one - Kanto and its creatures are familiar to plenty of people, and manages to update Red and Blue in a more refined way without introducing the bullshit they introduced in Let's Go. if it contained the Physical/Special split I'd argue this would be THE game pair to start off a total newbie with. I know that the game being a little too loyal to Red and Blue is a common complaint with this pair, but HeartGold and SoulSilver are sometimes worse on that front regarding the flaws of the original so idk
also the Gen 2 music remixes in this game are better than the entirety of HeartGold and SoulSilver's remix OST

copying this from my review of LeafGreen since they're the same game

admittedly, I still haven't gotten around to playing the 1.4 content yet. I kinda burned myself into a ditch hardcore when I played this game and absolutely nothing else for the summer of 2016 to the point where at one point my hours in one summer for Stardew surpassed 4 years of playing Terraria
but god, once this game hooks you it's very hard to quit playing

not as good as the Shadows of Almia by any means but this game had a soaring function before Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and this game made me want it as a feature SO bad after this game introduced the concept. anyways I didn't have the right internet to connect my DS to the internet so I never got to see the special episodes and that kinda sucked

admittedly I am very enamored whenever Mario isn't afraid to get weird (see my review of Super Paper Mario, another very weird Mario game) and I played the hell out of this on my 3DS during the initial software drought. the physics are a little wonky but there's little weird pieces of charm I haven't seen anywhere else in a Mario game. I can't say I want all of it back, but it'd be at least nice to see a Sarasaland enemy again at some point
