If I wanted to play a game where the story and background is explained entirely through reading, I'd just play Umineko

This game was overall a massive disappointment compared to the excellent shooters that were the initial 3 halo games. The levels feel looser, the new weapons feel boring, and by far the game's biggest fall is that the Prometheans are not fun to fight in the slightest. The story is fine but it feels far too overindulgent for what it ends up accomplishing. Only play this one if you really really like Halo.

Even though I enjoyed my time with Halo 4, it left me conflicted. On the one hand, Cortana’s deteriorating mental state and evolving relationship with Master Chief is an interesting dynamic to the story, the level design in some of the later levels was great and the forerunners new weapons and enemies added some welcome variety. On the other hand, the game’s antagonist bored me, some of the new weapons and enemies have mediocre designs and many levels are too open to promote strategic positioning on the battlefield. With some better writing and design decisions this could’ve been something special as the core gunplay, visuals and audio are all strong. I’d still recommend Halo 4 to Halo fans, but if you aren’t invested in the franchise and its antagonists, I’d skip this.

Halo Ranked

while it still retains a solid chunk of the core halo gameplay (the only reason this game isn't just straight up BAD), it still has some hard miss points in the gameplay, with the prometheans just being MUCH less fun to fight compared to the covenant. the story is just, silly, honestly. a bunch of characters not present in any bungie halo game come in and act important with no personality whatsoever, cortana's arc is just silly and made me laugh at multiple points, but the level design wasn't bad (i thought the piloting part at the beginning of the last mission was kinda ass and the pelican section was just SUPER underwhelming though) and fighting the covenant was quite a joy, much to my surprise. i recommend big bungie halo fans to play this game cause it was fun ENOUGH for me personally.
don't touch the multiplayer though lol

update 10/14/21 im replaying through it solo legendary after finding out theres an achievement for it and i was too nice to this game lol

It's kind of unfortunate that the only Halo game with a good story worth a damn happens to be attached to a shooter that's lackluster in almost every other area.

Not to say that the story is the only component worth considering here, Halo 4 definitely has incredible audio and visual design, with the best sfx in the series and wonderful vistas to discover. The soundtrack, while not as good as Bungie's general outings, is still solid and makes a lot of particular scenes ebb out of the screen in awe.

But everything else here is practically a miss! Level design is wide open but terribly balanced areas, with subpar enemy design with weaker AI than their prior counterparts. The forerunner enemies especially end up annoying in how reductive the strategy is to manage them, with some of the weakest emphasis on positioning here. It's unfortunate, because otherwise the campaign tells a great story about moving on, despite its shortcomings on pacing and the dank meme that is The Librarian. There's also some cross lore from the books that isn't exactly well put in here, although it does make true on forcing the Chief into an incredibly unfamiliar area with a shitton of time passing, so it's somewhat forgivable.

The multiplayer and spartan ops are just outright awful too. While it's not exactly the worst multiplayer in the world, firefights have incredibly boring map design and very low skill floor mechanics. You can pretty much sleep to get a decent kd because ttk is high even for Halo. Weapon strategies are simplistic, and snowballing is an ever growing problem even after patches. And the less said about Spartan Ops, the better.

That being said, I can't really say that this is an overall misstep in the series. The highs of Halo 4's campaign is enough to make an enjoyable entry and it does FAR FAR FAR FAR better than what Bungie did with fucking Halo Reach. Worth playing once.

Halo 4 feels a lot like 343 Industries trying to be Bungie and coming close. Both to its benefit and its detriment the game feels a lot like 3/Reach, albeit modernized in some respects. Sprint, cinematic gameplay moments (L to crawl), and standard late 7th-early 8th generation mission archetypes are all 343 really adds to Bungie's foundation. In some respects it works, the gunplay feels great, but in others it rings hollow. There's the prefunctory escape sequence, the Scorpion sequence, etc. There's a definite tension between 343 wanting to replicate Bungie's formula and reclaim (hehe) the series for itself. But, often 4 feels planted in another team's design.

Then, the second half of the game hits. While the Didact is a fairly underdeveloped character, the plot and its cinematic qualities are excellent. Cortana's descent into Rampancy is legitimately touching. The game comes more into its own in terms of level design and gameplay concepts too, focusing on the Promethians. It's fun to mow down Covenant, but the Promethians are 343's baby and they're pretty engaging combatants. Their arsenal is pretty much reskinned UNSC weaponry, which is disappointing, but as a pseudo-replacement for the Flood, they're great.

On the whole, it took a while to warm up to Halo 4, but then I really started to enjoy it for the game it is, not the game it could've been had Bungie made it. It feels like 343 gains that confidence too in the second half, and the end result is a pretty good, bordering on great sci-fi shooter. I'm excited to play 5 and feel 343 settle more into its enhanced mobility, ADS-focused gameplay and fresh narrative. While I understand people wanted 5 to feel more like classic Halo, I think 4 is at its best when it is moving forward, instead of looking back. I'm personally excited to see that doubled-down on.

343 sure does their multiplayer better than their campaigns, don't they?

Edit: After 10 years, I finally finished this campaign! I understand why I fell off so quickly at launch, the levels are pretty unremarkable at first. Thankfully, I discovered today that the last three levels are absolute FIRECRACKERS. No idea why everything before then feels so bland, but Halo 4 ends really strongly! I'd even say the Broadsword mission was a more enjoyable vehicle level than CE or 3's ending Warthog runs.

Story's kind of nonsensical, and the change in tone is obvious even if you didn't know about the Bungie/343 handoff, but those final levels really make up for a lot.

I actually won this game in a contest on a gaming website back in the day, together with a brand-new XBOX 360 in the Halo 4 design. This should have been one of the happiest days in my life, since I never owned a home console before and had always dreamt of having one for myself. But sadly, this stroke of luck happened only after I was already starting to lose my passion for video games. My computer broke down shortly before and I was drawn to other interests. I ended up rarely using the console and only played a couple of games on it before giving it away.

One of these games was, of course, Halo 4. I was a big fan of the series, especially Halo: Reach, which to this day is one of my favorites. So, I really tried to like this game. I played through the campaign multiple times, alone and with different friends in co-op, like we always used to do with the previous entries. But it just never seemed to click with any of us. On the contrary, it slowly but surely dawned on me with each successive playthrough, just how uninspired and boring this game truly is. My last playthrough was with a friend who was unimpressed from the start. I remember vividly how I kept trying to convince him – and myself, for that matter – that we were having a good time. Before each new mission I used to say: "Now just wait for it, this time something cool will happen." But it never did.

It was a clumsy attempt on my end to pretend like we could recapture the excitement of the original games again, just because on the surface the situation looked similar to what we experienced before. I was unwilling to realize that even something as robust a foundation as the shooting mechanics from Halo could become stale and generic when they are detached from any sort of engaging stakes, interesting novelties, or even basis competent game design. It was exactly how it must have felt like for the developers at 343 Industry when making this game.

"Halo 4" leaves me conflicted. There's truly a lot to like here, but equally as much that doesn't work.

On the good side, I love the look of this game. There's a Metroid Prime level of immersion with Chiefs' helmet that really stands out. The art-direction top to bottom is just gorgeous with terrain and enemies that look unique and have a metallic sheen complementing the cyberspace-esque nature of the world. I struggled with the feel of the game in the beginning, but then remembered 343 gives a bevy of options to make the game play like you remember or different. I even love the Mantis and every time it showed up I got excited.

Where the game doesn't work is in its story. I applaud the relationship building between Cortana and Chief. I even love the cliffhanger at the end. However, 343 made a miscalculation in assuming the player base at large had read all of the numerous novels leaving for a story that felt really confusing as someone who hasn't done so. The second half in particular I just checked out story wise, cause I knew I was entirely lost and got back to the fighting.

That fighting also becomes a big problem in the later stages because, well, the Prometheans aren't always fun to fight and in tighter level designs it becomes more about popping up taking a shot and getting back to cover and in a game that does utilize cover mechanics it just always feel somewhat clunky if not broken.

"Halo 4" isn't nearly as terrible to me as many people claim it is. The word "terrible" never even entered the equation, it was more "lacking" if anything.

I completed a second playthrough of Halo 4 in co-op with a friend who was playing it for a first time and screw it, I like this game's campaign even more so much that I think it's an 8/10. I love this campaign and think it gets way too much hate because it really does a lot right. In my opinion, 343 did a really good job for the campaign.

Halo 4 is by far one of the most over hated games I've played and I really don't understand a lot of the distain for it. But first I'll address the elephant in the room and that's the new art direction and style. A lot of people don't like it, but personally I really like it. Chief's new armor is really cool and Cortana's new design is also cool, the weapon redesigns are awesome and are detailed, and some of the new weapons and enemy designs are great. If anything I think the real issue with the art style is more of a lack of transition, but that's kind of it. I do still prefer the traditional Halo art style however and I'm glad Infinite is returning to its roots.

I also think an underrated aspect about this game is the sound design and my god I love it. Yeah the new shield recharge and plasma pistol hum is different, but I think they sound awesome. Especially the shield recharge. The weapons are also more beefy than ever and I really like how 343 recorded real firearms for the effects.

One common criticism people had for Halo 4 was the characterization of Chief and I really don't understand why people dislike it. Chief has always been a likable badass in Halo 1-3 even though he only talked in cutscenes briefly, but in my opinion they made him even better in Halo 4. Not only does he talk during gameplay now, but he talks far more in general and his banter with Cortana is a lot more natural. He used to be a blank slate for the player to insert themselves into and now he's a fully realized character. People also didn't like the new dynamic with Chief and Cortana, but I think it's fine and is just as good as always.

The new sandbox is also really fun to use. While they could have had more, they did add a fair amount of new things to keep it fresh. The new promethean weapons are awesome and feel really cool to use. I love the gravitational design of them. Some of the new UNSC and Covenant weapons are really unique as well. My favorites especially being the new UNSC SAW and Rail Gun as well as the redesign for the Covenant carbine and needler. My only issue with the new sandbox in Halo 4 that really bothers me is the very low ammo spare ammo you can carry. It's really annoying at times. I also want to give an honorable mention to the new UNSC vehicle called the Mantis. It's one of the best things ever.

One of the things I actually don't like about Halo 4 as much is unfortunately the music. Don't get me wrong, there are some amazing tracks in Halo 4 and my favorite is 117. It's the first time Master Chief actually got his own theme and it's by far one of the best tracks in the Halo series. There are a few other standout tracks, but they're nowhere near as memorable as 117 or any other tracks in the Halo series. Marty O' Donnel unfortunately did not compose this game since he was working on Destiny at the time (which is kind of the opposite since the game sucks, but the music is amazing) . Marty's work on CE, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach is fantastic and has some of the best music in gaming history, but Halo 4 just falls flat and a lot of it is forgettable except 117.

I love the story for Halo 4. While it does have its hiccups at times, it's pretty great for the most part. I won't spoil it since all my reviews are non-spoiler, but the personal journey of Chief and Cortana is great with a very bitter-sweet ending. It's just a shame such a good story leads on to Halo 5 which had a terrible campaign. The level design in Halo 4 is also for the most part pretty good. There are some pretty bad sections at times like I found the final level to be pretty annoying at times, but overall it's pretty great.

The only thing I can confidently say that's really bad about Halo 4 is the multiplayer. The multiplayer is awful and tried way too hard to appeal to CoD fans. Now don't get me wrong, I love me some classic CoD multiplayer like MW2, but it does not translate well to Halo's formula. Halo has always been a more arcade and traditional arena shooter, but for some reason Halo 4 implements a loud out system that's really broken. It's not surprising that it died so fast. It's just really a downgrade from what we're used to, but luckily Halo 5 has a great multiplayer. Halo 4 MP does have its fans though and I respect that.

Overall though, Halo 4's campaign is great in my eyes and is definitely over hated. The multiplayer sucks, but the campaign is definitely great and very memorable. Because I'm judging this as a whole including multiplayer, I have to drop points because of the multiplayer alone. The multiplayer is like a 4/10, but the campaign is an 8/10. Still though, I'd highly recommend playing this game on the MCC and would discourage you from skipping it.

7/10

Horrible story, wannabe Call of Duty-ish gameplay with incredible pacing issues and the worst AI of the series. Can't wait for Infinite!

adjusted my expectations after years and years of seeing how polarizing this was among players and even still this was worse than i could've ever imagined.

a lack of larger scale multi-faction combat scenarios, terrible bullet sponge enemies with shitty weapons (with ammo counts like they were trying to make a survival horror game?) on top of even shittier overall encounter design. this was really off the mark for me.

it looks incredible for a late 360 game but that's almost it in terms of nice things i can say about it. maybe the multiplayer was fun or something but i don't care for that.

343 is Microsoft’s Naughty Dog

u think u Finishd Teh Fight? sorry but An Ancient Evil Awakens (the makers of games such as Too Human, Turok 2008 and Kinect Star Wars, all merged together into a MegaZord called '343'). Cortana looks like she belongs in a porn parody and I think that accurately describes the overall quality of this MTN Dew/Dorito wombocombo advertisement that received 9outta10's from all your favorite gaming media outlets, who were keen enough to inform discerning consumers that this made-with-love sequel has the strongest story yet (love and kind regards from GameSpot). Credit where credit is due, the people behind the story clearly cared enough to read every Bionicle book and the lore wiki in preparation for this, that's why they act like MasterChaff is an actual character with gravitas even though up till now he'd been a camogreen brick who doesn't afraid of anything while outside of the games he was a soda mascot. Look forward to my upcoming review of Halo 5 my felllow gamers who recently purchasd the master chief collection for 9,99 on steem (what a deal!!somany achievements for me to collect)

This wasnt even that bad tbh but every time I look at it, its just a reminder that maybe this and everything else after this just shouldnt have happened.

Finally got around to playing it, and boy, it was pretty obvious from the start that 343 Industries should not have had anything to do with this series.

Just a soulless campaign. Cortana is "dying" the entire time and glitches get progressively more annoying, the main villain is a nobody whose finale is an EPIC!!! quick time event that doesn't belong in any Halo game, and for a lot of the game you'll be forced to use the lame Promethean weapons that feel like they came from a Bionicle box (and somehow even less cool). This game is barely Halo, it's as if they somehow managed to put one of Halo 3's farts on a disk.

I haven't played Halo 5 yet, but I hear that's even worse. Maybe it's such a train wreck, it manages to be entertaining? Halo 4 will leave your memory minutes after you stop playing it, at least a shitshow has a chance of being memorable.

If you haven't played this and own the MCC, just consider it a waste of hard drive space and time. Don't bother trying it out, look at how they're STILL mismanaging Halo Infinite, you think their earlier work was any better??

10/10 if i were rate cortana....💙

343's first attempt with a mainline Cheif Halo game and it was kinda disappointing.

The story feels like a fan fiction follow up to Halo 3, with a Cheif X Cortana "Romance", weird character motivations and writing. Awakening "Ancient Evils". Just really out of place stuff that doesn't feel like it belongs in Halo.

Gameplay-wise it doesn't really do anything new besides add a dedicated sprint button. Shooting feels okay, but not as satisfying as other Halo games because of the new enemy alien type you fight. The new weapons you get which aren't UNSC/Covenenat weapons are really bad and don't pack the punch the other weapons had. The gameplay kinda falls a few steps back from where Bungie left it.

The biggest addition are these new enemy types, the Promethians, are not fun to fight at all. They teleport all over the place, don't react to your shots, and just aren't satisfying to kill at all. It feels like you're shooting at rocks. They are also really annoying to fight as they can be revived by drones once you kill them. Very weird enemy design by 343.

The environments, being one of the best things about Bungie's Halo, is very uninspired here. You're just getting jungles, deserts and some facilities. Nothing really stands out besides the final trench run mission - that was pretty cool - and the fact that you get to control a Pelican.

I think on release many people gave 343 the benefit of the doubt with this game, giving them a chance since this is their first mainline Halo, but in hindsight they were going down a deep hole that Halo couldn't really return from.

Halo 4 isn't terrible. It's still a decent FPS but considering the games that came before it, it was really a drop in quality.

New species, new guns, a new halo, running is bad in this game though.

Amazing game. Soundtrack was awsome and the story was good. Multiplayer was call of duty. Overall a good overall first effort for 343.

Halo 4 is the greatest gaming letdown I've ever encountered. It's a complete disservice to fans of the series who had been there since Combat Evolved first hit stores.

Nothing about this game is good; the convoluted and unecessary plot, abhorrent enemy design, boring map design, one note environments, Master Chief speaking way too much, and the absolutely horrible weapon pallette.

It's such a bad game from start to finish it's really hard to put into words, and to boot the multiplayer is somehow worse than the campaign.

I can not recommend this game to anyone.

I want to give 343 alot of credit for this one. You can really tell just how much they poured into this game. The end result just isn't my thing. Its to this day 343's most content complete game and has a very decent campaign that is worth revisiting. But I just can't get behind alot of the direction this took things. I dont mind a more human Chief and Cortana but I am not really sure it was something I ever would have asked for if I didnt have it.

Visually Halo 4 is one of the most impressive games on the Xbox 360. It runs at a native 720p (something the other games didnt do) and has a very clean image. Its just such a striking image with lots of detail. The art direction itself is to be debated but even as someone that abhors it, to be able to sit here and type out that I think Halo 4 is an amazing looking game is saying something. Looks even BETTER on PC at higher frame rates. In a lot of ways playing this on the MCC in 2014 was basically like playing it again for the first time.

Its worth one run through frustrating enemy design aside but stay away from the multiplayer....

don't be fooled by the name, Halo cannot hold 4 guns in this game, only one

343 didn't think they were cooler than a Halo campaign they however did think they were cooler than a Halo narrative.

Meu favorito da franquia...
A melhor parte do jogo é o multiplayer local, foi um dos jogos que eu mais zerei na infancia com uns amigos.

For me, this game feels like an entry in the franchise that has no respect whatsoever for what the original trilogy was all about.
Many gameplay decisions go in total contradiction to the core of Halo's arena design. Sure, I can play it for 2-3 matches and have fun, but after that it gets very stale.
What many will praise is the campaign, and I also have many complaints about it. I do love the premise of the story, specially the plot-line of Cortana's rampancy. The gameplay, level design, and enemy encounters of the campaign however, just bring it down so much. The entire campaign feels like I'm waiting for a level with those epic Halo battles I love, and it just never came.
