As of yesterday morning, this game has now shut down and is no longer playable.

This game was really special to me, so to say that I'm sad to see it go would be a strong contender for understatement of the century. In an age where multiplayer games are dominated by practically indistinguishable gritty war shooters and dime-a-dozen annual sports games, this chaotic, over-the-top take on 3v3 dodgeball was a refreshing standout.

I remember how I was convinced to give the game a go; my mom was watching EA Play that year and saw this game get featured (since it was still an EA Originals game at the time), recommending it to me because she thought I'd like it. Her observation was more than a little bit astute - in case the post-mortem essay you're reading right now wasn't a dead giveaway. I ended up giving the free trial a shot and I was instantly hooked. The gameplay was challenging, competitive and a ton of fun. It was the first time in ages that a multiplayer game resonated with me in such a way. I kept playing whenever I could for quite a while, and while I did end up taking a few breaks, I always ended up coming back around to it sooner or later thanks to the abundance of fresh new content that was getting added on a regular basis.

This game was something special. A truly unique game, and one that I will always look back on very fondly. From helping my team claim victory, to getting stomped by the enemy team thanks to their ability to actually - perish the thought - catch the ball, to laughing a bit harder than I'd like to admit at the announcement of the Among Us collab, this game brought great times all around to me and many others.

It wasn't meant to last, unfortunately. According to the developers, the game's death knell was its inability to retain a consistent playerbase. I always thought this game was underrated as hell, so knowing that said underratedness ended up doing it in feels like a bad kick to the gut. So here we stand; Knockout City is no more. This game I spent so much time on and loved enough to write this many words about is just... gone. Of course, there is a private server version on PC, which is cool since there is technically a playable version still, but it's not exactly ideal for someone like me who can barely play PC games at all. I'm very glad it exists, but as far as someone like me is concerned, there is no such thing as Knockout City anymore.

I've been through this kind of thing before - Dragalia Lost was a pretty recent one that I still miss a lot, and Sonic Runners' shutdown will always remain a very sad day of my gaming career (although Revival thankfully has taken up the original's mantle and also rules), but very few shutdowns like this have hit quite as hard as this one. This silly little dodgeball game was genuinely one of my favorites from recent years, and I will miss it very, very much.

I'm going to miss the refreshingly colorful, Saturday-morning cartoon esque vibes of the game and its visuals. I'm gonna miss the competitive, easy-to-learn-yet-hard-to-master gameplay. I'm gonna miss the feeling of logging in that day to see some new content or events. I am really going to miss Knockout City. Wether I was slinging dodgeballs around the court, teaming up with my allies to crush the competition, or getting smoked so hard that one of the guys from the enemy team sent me "LMFAO, get rekt, GG EZ" on PSN, I had an absolute blast with this game from the time I first picked up that dodgeball all the way until I threw my final one.

According to my Exophase statistics, I played Knockout City for 136.6 hours. It was my go-to multiplayer game for a long time. It ranked #2 for playtime on my 2021 PlayStation Wrap-Up just behind Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, and was my most played game of the year in my 2022 PS Wrap-Up. And every single one of those 136 hours was filled with fun, competition, and smiles. I'm very sad to see it go, yet I'm very grateful that I got the chance to experience this.

If you told me in 2021 that my longest Backloggd review would end up being for the silly little dodgeball game, I would have laughed my ass off. Because it's just that; a silly little dodgeball game. But it was my favorite silly little dodgeball game. So much so that I'm here writing more words about, as my sister called it once, "Volleyball Town", than some people have wrote for their favorite games of all time. Guess having a game you absolutely love vanish into the sunset will do that to you.

Goodbye, Knockout City. Gone far, far too soon, but gave me lasting, happy memories all the same. It may not have managed to find its place in the overall gaming community, but it sure meant a lot to one guy in particular.

Some of the most fun multiplayer I had in 2021. Getting together with friends and wrecking house in online dodgeball is incredibly fun. It's a shame this game didn't have a better launch and wasn't more popular.

Fun Competitive Dodgeball with Power-ups that make the game seem reminiscent of a time where you go over to your friend’s house as a kid to play on their N64 and play something like Mario Kart or Goldeneye.

The best feature about the game is that the free trial is good up to being Level 25 (but depending on how good your perform, you could achieve hitting level 25 rather quickly)

My favorite power-up is the Multi-Ball because of the multiple ways you can approach the opponent with 3 balls in your possession. Plus you can act as a support role with them and could keep passing them to your teammates if they are closer to an enemy. Well worth the $20.

had fun for the first couple of matches but for the rest of them it was constantly getting steamrolled by people who have been playing this (pretty dead) game for 6 months. not to sound like a sore loser or anything but getting absolutely steamrolled is so demoralizing. think i'll just find a different game

Knockout City feels like a game Nintendo would make. The dodgeball-inspired gameplay, and the robust systems it is built upon, brings a truly novel experience to the multiplayer space. It cannot be mapped onto anything that has come before.

Yet, its uniqueness would be squandered if it wasn’t such a joy to play. Pretty much everything, except a weird mapping of the double jump, feels great to pull off. And the meta layer of strategy players engage in to try and determine how to outplay opponents is utterly captivating. All of this is elevated when playing with a team, as the game removes basically any friction to synergy, even if you solo que.

That’s not to say Knockout City is perfect. It’s art style is, to put it kindly, polarizing and the DJ announcer just plain sucks. Coming up against a clan as solo qued players is often a bad time. And a few moves seem to be in need of some balance tweaks. But all this is easily forgiven when actually playing the game is so tremendously fun and refreshing.

Sooooo I live in Eastern parts of Russia, and usually I either play multiplayer games in Asian or South European servers. But, alas, Knockout City literally forbids me from playing on a server that has a ping of 200. And for some reason the nearest servers have higher ping. I dunno, man

Dummy fun multiplayer game. Ranking system actually works, netcode surprisingly immaculate, mechanics are easy to learn, middling to master, there are zero bad maps, and while teams are encouraged, there is always potential for an individual to shit on everyone around them.

My only gripes are a slow level up system (you telling me there are 900 levels in a season; hell naw) and on the blue moon occasion when the game does lag, it is the most unplayable multiplayer game ever. Like, worse than Super Smash Bros. Brawl online. Some new modes would also go a long way to make this stand out.

This is not a single player game, this is absolutely a burst of team-based multiplayer 3v3 perfection. I really hope this game takes off like Fall Guys did sans the community-killing social media.

i don't know how lasting this will be but it's really well constructed and it's the first game in years - probably since PUBG got big - that i've been able to just chuck on and hop into a game with some friends who are already playing. the tactical levels to it are a lot of fun, and altho the sort of retro-futurist-rockabilly theming is a bit corny, it does a good job of being visually readable and highly customisable. pretty cool Big Game, i hope it continues to get stuff added to it!

Fun, smooth, good looking, good to play with friends. Found it got a bit old after a while- there were only so many ways you could throw a ball at one another.

So close to not only being the best free to play game, but overall best multiplayer game. Unfortunately the servers are inconsistent at best for this always online game. Otherwise, literally everything else is perfect.

Out of all the sports you could turn into a video game dodgeball is a very strange one, even though it makes perfect sense, but the most shocking thing is how fucking fantastic the game is, I won't be playing for a long time I usually don't with online multiplayer games but this one was a lot of fun with friends.

Also: this game is too much fun to be published by EA, it just is.

This game is dreadful. Its incredibly bland, clunky as hell, awful to look at and despite being a ps plus game all I can find are matches with bots.

I'm Surprised That I'm Saying Good Things About A Recent EA Game, But Here We Are. Knockout City Is A Very Fun Online Game That Works With Its Alright Art Style But Fun Gameplay. When I First Saw It, It Looked Pretty Generic. The Different Ability's You Can Use In This Game Are Cool And Unique In There Own Way And Work Very Smoothly.
Gameplay: 7/10

Good casual Fun with friends. Not much staying power or depth, but it's pleasant

Initial impressions look a lot like a game that allows for skill expression through simple mechanics, but the reality of it is that the rigidity of its systems makes it tough to play. Offense players with one of the normal (non-powerup) balls can alter the timing of a throw, but in a 1v1 it'll be pretty hard to trip up a skilled defensive player. Teamwork is important primarily because defense is so easy, meaning that you'll need a teammate doing something to prevent tackle-spamming or making an easy catch (the timing window is fairly generous). This game has/had potential, but without some tweaking of timing windows, new mechanics, or new interactions with existing mechanics, I think people may tire of this one fairly quickly.

This was fun, I always like when a company makes an online multiplayer shooter that isn't Manly Military Blow 'Em Away #4572. Didn't hold my attention for long but I enjoyed my time with it. Of course because it's EA you have to pay extra for all the cool costumes and aesthetic stuff even though the game costs 20 big ones so that sucks. I'd recommend checking it out on GamePass if you have it or waiting for a sale but if you wanna play it you should probably do it soon, I'm pretty sure the community's already dying

Concept is interesting but it wore off pretty fast.

Honestly pretty fun if it had more people playing and it wasn't shutting down already lol. Had a lot of potential.

Ah, Knockout City, a multiplayer game with a unique concept that unfortunately didn't stick around for long. The idea of converting dodgeball into 3v3 matches is a neat one, and it was fun playing some matches online and trying out the new game modes, but after that, there just wasn't enough to keep me engaged for much longer. Sucks to see it go, and the first trailer they've shown off didn't do the game much justice, which is a shame, because it's a decent game. Even though the servers have shut down, I look forward to seeing what Velan Studios has in the future.

kindve an ongoing review because this is multiplayer only, but yo this game is fun as hell.

Things I liked:

Easy to pick up, but enough depth to intrigue.

Costumes are colorful and fun and definitely needed because everyone is ugly as hell.

Any chance of winning beyond the earliest ranks is predicated on close teamwork and this will only become more true as people figure out the game.

To that end, glad to see the first limited time mode is one where you can only throw balled teammates.

Crossplay right out the gate. 60 FPS mode on the Switch as an option. Pretty good netcode even across platforms. Love to see a multiplayer game that isnt broken on release.

Things I dislike:

The faces are almost all uniformly hideous youtube poop monstrosities.

Maps are a mixed bag. Some of them just are not fun to navigate.

Not a "dislike" so much as something I'm keeping my eye on. I'm curious what the actual skill ceiling of this game is and what "high level" play looks like. Is it gonna be like For Honor on console, where everything was a boring parryfest? That game still had pretty long legs even with those problems tho

Been playing it with my bros and it's been a pretty fun time.

Wonderfully stylish and addictive. Curious to see how much it has in terms of legs, but other then that small quibble this is a great multiplayer experience and one of the most accessible as well. Easy to pick up and play, I can totally see this becoming a favourite of many friend groups in the future if it continues down this path.

It also helps the game is actually surprisingly complex for such a simple premise and basic controls. Strategy is key here and your quality of teamwork will make or break your game. Ranked is one of the best in a while as well, definitely a must play for anyone looking for a fun multiplayer experience.

Knockout City is my surprise of the year so far.

To boil it down, it's basically a 3v3 or 4v4 arena shooter themed around dodgeball. It's very unique and crazy addicting. The feeling of catching an opponent's ball only to lob it back at them to knock them out is amazing.

There is nothing on the market that's quite like Knockout City. I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun online diversion.

Blinked and you missed it. Was fun for a little while when played with friends only
