what a delightful little game! not without its flaws, but i had a great time with this one. actually, it mainly has one giant flaw. the camera is so monumentally shit. look, i get it, its a ps1 game and the developers have never made a 3d game before, yada yada, i don't really care. i'm not playing this game in 1997, its 20XX now and the camera is so bad i almost dropped this game entirely. i got better at handling it over time, sure, but even by the final boss battle, after about 8 hours of playtime, it still felt like i was fighting more against the camera than the boss itself.

but other than the camera, i really loved this game. interestingly, if you analyse each element of mega man legends individually, you'll find that it doesn't excel at anything at all. as stated, the camera is dogshit, but also the voice acting is terrible and combat is mediocre and the music is repetitive and the dungeons are very uninspiring. the exception is the art direction, this game is absolutely gorgeous and everyone knows it. but i feel that mega man legends is a textbook example of a game that is so much greater than the sum of its parts.

sure, the voice acting sucks, but it's also kind of charmingly bad and the cutscenes were always a joy to sit through. the combat is nothing special, but there's a decent level of depth to trying out different combinations of buster parts and special weapons, and learning the attack patterns of each enemy so you know how to avoid getting hit is pretty rewarding. the dungeons consist of narrow hallways and tunnels, occasionally throwing in a large arena-type room for some variety, and it all kind of feels like they were built by one of capcom's interns, but they're still a lot of fun to run-and-gun through. there's just something really cozy about the atmosphere, i'm not sure how to explain it. it's the vibe of the thing.

the last thing i want to comment on is the narrative. no spoilers, but it took a really strange twist at the very last second that i was not expecting at all, but then that twist is promptly resolved by an unexpected character and i loved it. there's lots of humour sprinkled throughout the game, you'd do well to speak to all the npcs just so you can experience all of the dialogue boxes. i only wish i got some more tron bonne, she was my favourite character. they should make a spin-off based on tron bonne, i think.

anyway, great game, i highly recommend it, it's not long so you might as well play it especially if you like cozy comfy ps1 games and shooting and robots

there were a couple annoying boss fights, and i don't think i ever got used to the camera controls, but besides that the combat was pretty cool, and the character models were surprisingly really good, especially the expressions
idk how soon i'll be getting to the sequel tho lmao

Tron Bonne's sweaty pantyhose

It's great how it balances adventure and town-building elements with interconnected dungeon-crawling, although more could've been done with both aspects. The tone and art direction cement it as a personal fave.

I was going to be harsher on this game due to its controls, but after a certain point I got used to them. They are still bad though, everything that is hard about this game comes from its control scheme.

Moving away from the negatives, this game is super charming. All of the designs are great, especially Roll's, a straight up 10/10. Graphically, this game is still great; the only way I can describe it is as charming. All the characters are fun, and the Bonne family makes for entertaining villains. Considering the era, the dub is surprisingly alright; again, it all helps create this charming quality.

I DIDNT THINK ID LIKE THIS GAME BUT I LOVE IT

A good-looking PlayStation 1 game?! How can that be...

Time to point out the obvious, this game is adorable and has one of the most unique art styles in all of the PS1 library, and proves that a well-crafted art style can be timeless just like how Wind Waker did in the next console generation.

Now, now we all know that this game is adorable but what about the gameplay? It's alright, the overall gameplay loop is great I really like exploring the dungeons, killing monsters, and finding secret items to unlock new weapons and upgrades it's pretty basic but it works well. Now the main issue of this game is the controls, it's infamously bad and even if I really do love this game I think it just really kills it. Of course, I'll recommend this game to people it's just that most people tend to get filtered by the odd controls, and especially when the game first starts you are forced into 3 boss battles in a row. The main issue with the controls is that it uses tank controls with L and R to rotate the camera to the side pressed making the game very clunky to control and move around, though you do get used to it so it's not unplayable.

Even if the gameplay isn't for everyone there's still a lot to love in this game such as the dialogue and overall ambiance of the game reminiscent of an anime from the 80s-90s which is highly noticeable during the cutscenes with the character's facial expressions.

Outside of the main story, there are a few side quests that unlock over time and they are fine at best, they are mostly just fetching quests in the city with cute scenarios and the reward often tends to be upgrade materials for new weapons.

This game is highly in need of a Remaster fixing the control and some gameplay clunk but nothing graphics wise dear god please do not make an HD remaster of this game and ruin the art style I beg of you Capcom do not fuck this up.

Roll Caskett is my wife.

Roll Caskett is the best roll design in the series

this was one of the first games i ever played, so there is no way i can be objective, but Megaman Legends is a joy. the dungeon crawling gameplay is idiosyncratic and occasionally frustrating, but breezy enough to forgive. the art and cutscenes do an astounding amount with so little. you can say the same about a lot of the game. it focuses on one small island, packed full of characters with stories and problems. the game’s other half, the underground ruins you explore, interconnect too. they give the impression of something older and more sinister than the delightful surface.

This game is awesome. It's amazing how well animated this is. At times I forget it's even a PS1 game. This was a great transition to 3D for the blue bomber. So many cool and interesting characters and a fun little town to explore and mess around in. Lots of customizations and dungeons to conquer. It's a great romp.

An incredibly solid game from start to finish. Tank controls with strafing does take some time to adjust to, but once you do, the gameplay is very quick and runs smoothly. Locking onto enemies is snappy so battles never feel like a struggle trying to keep track of what you're doing.

Visuals are gorgeous with a lot of flat shading/texture work to make it looks more like an anime in 3D. Clever use of low draw distances for dungeons, and unique textures for them as well. The animations and cutscene work are also solid if very simple.

Sound design is no slouch either, music is catchy and memorable voice acting is top notch for its time, and the ambience in this game is hauntingly beautiful.

Really my major complaints just come down to controls and it's difficulty is a bit all over the place.

That said this might be one of the best gems on the PS1 and I still very much adore and enjoy it. It does what it needs to well, and doesn't really get held back too bad for it.

当時のPSとは思えないいい出来だったなぁ、せめてHD化とかをお願いしたい……

One of my favorite art styles of this era of video games. Really fun and unique game, I really have to play the second game.

the characters, world and gameplay all come together really well to capture the feeling of playing through an OVA. Really great overall, though I wish there were a few more dedicated dungeons.

it's good if you aint a lil bitch

This game is fucking awesome I don't really wanna write a whole thing for it cause I've already done that so many times but it's like super duper good you should play it.

Enfim, MARAVIGOLD!

"Charming" is Legends biggest export. With a control scheme sunk right in that terrible period before analog stick camera control became standard, the gameplay suffers from limitation jank but the heart is definitely there.

The 64 version but OG and better in pretty much every way! Even though I grew up with the crunchier version, I still love this one just as much. 10/10 Still a vibe~

came into this not expecting much and ended up enjoying a bunch! while some issues with the unusual control scheme and absolutely horrid lock on did frustrate me at times I found it to be a great time for the whole way through! will be playing legends 2 immediately now

the quintessential 32bit anime game

god this game ages so well, minus 'yass hills'

Cute and charming, with a wonderful localization (voice acting included) and some of the best faces you'll see on the platform. A big change from the franchise's roots, but it's a lot of fun, despite the general 3D camera gripes.

Love the aesthetics and the dialogue/story was charming. The controls were the worst thing I've ever experienced tho :)

People who can't get over tank controls shouldn't be allowed to be near a videogame controller
