In awe at this strong culmination of all the lessons, understandings, and ways Takumi has grown in his writing and directing. That was my first thought when going through the first two cases, a sort of magical expertise in having perfected a lot of the mechanics of mystery and characterization, as well as how the themes developed to the end. And while he still hasn't 'quite' found his footing on pacing all of those just as perfectly, the way each case gave a fresh introduction of stuff we've all seen before, alongside characters that went through familiar but stronger arcs vs. the rest of AA, was enough to just seal the heavy tears I had during the ending suite.

To an extent I don't even need the sequel really, I feel like there were so many wonderful character mysteries and characterization all interwoven together. That interrogation of justice, defense, and honesty by Naruhodo, to what the law really means, and then a complete breakdown of how a disgusting flawed system of 'justice' ends up becoming a weapon used by the people hurt by it to their own ends, even the most vengeful ones. The profuse personality emanating from Sholmes, who quickly jumped to the top of my husband list, to the earnest dialogue given by Iris and the defendants. I think the part that nails that feeling most is that when the jury was first put in the player's face I felt like it was irritating, but by the final case I was jumping at my seat to the next summation and interrogation because Takumi just pulls out every drawer from the cabinet to give each one heart!!!

I do still welcome what the sequel will bring for me, but I think even on its own, this is the best journey I've had with the series as a whole and I'll not soon forget it.

Blitzed through the fan translation in a single week. Shu Takumi's passion for justice and his disgust with unfair systems shines so bright in these cases. It really exemplified my problem with modern Ace Attorney: the games became more about solving complicated mysteries rather than understanding why those mysteries occurred or the way horrible people can subvert justice for their own ends. I don't want to fully claim this is only Takumi's doing, but the games under his direction clearly demonstrate a greater interest in who these crimes affect than just the crime itself. Its the Umineko philosophy: the mystery genre is nothing without the heart.

The character work really shines in this. Ryunosuke is a great protagonist, rising to overwhelming odds that are designed to keep him down. Susato is a wonderful assistant. She feels like a real person instead of a collection of gimmicks. The tertiary characters are more cartoonish, but they're still likable and endearing. The team clearly did plenty of research into the time period to understand the weird prejudices and biases of the time, but also the more minute details to understand the clues that help build a solid mystery. And it doesn't spell out answers until you've already presented them, letting you feel like a genius ahead of the curb.

The biggest knock against this game is that it was clearly made with sequels in mind and it sounds like the sequel, realizing that the odds are against it, works more to provide answers. I'm so ecstatic to get to the next part of this adventure and see the pieces come together.

With this being Shu Takumi's return to directing an Ace Attorney game, I'm left racking my brain as to why exactly this one feels so much less engaging than the original trilogy. Could it be the slower pace, the fact that all the dialogue feels unnecessarily verbose, especially in the early cases? Is it the character dynamics, which are less fleshed out than their counterparts in the first game? Maybe it's how the music, while pleasant and appropriate for the setting, lacks the same punch as the original trilogy's. Ultimately, it's really that a combination of these factors and more that end up making the entire game feel like one long tutorial. Takumi's ability to wrap a disjointed story up in a tidy little bow remains as strong as ever, but it's getting there that's what I'm more interested in. Ace Attorney is at its best when it combines its simple contextual mechanics to create complex sequences. Pressing to have a witness adapt the testimony in a specific way before presenting evidence, for example. Save for the end of the final case, here you're never asked to do much above the minimum. Press on every statement, flip a piece of evidence to discover a note on its back, shift focus to a different witness when the game tells you to. The new bells and whistles, both deductions and juries, while undeniably entertaining, fail to require any foresight as well. Foresight- this word, to me, is why the series' apex represents a potential new evolution in the field of detective fiction. Not only encouraging but requiring the player to be one step ahead of the proceedings is the genius that made the original trilogy so immediately and lastingly appealing. Where'd it go?

why are the best AA games the JP only ones

The story of how being cross-eyed saved the government

Definitely a game that’s made to set up the sequel but if the sequel is anything like AAI2 then I’m fine with that, and unlike aai1, this game is actually pretty good on its own. It certainly has pacing issues and isn’t as engaging as T&T or AAI2, but it’s certainly “deeper” and more fulfilling than anything that came from SOJ or DD.

Yo cuando Herlock Sholmes realiza la peor deducción posible: porfa ten sexo conmigo

This review contains spoilers

The game was good, worse than the first and third games of the original trilogy (I haven't played the Apollo and Investigations games yet).
The first case was good, but it kinda felt too long for being a tutorial case and the second while introducing the best character in the game, it felt lacking because it was only investigations and had no trial segments.
The third case is great, it felt similar to Farewell my Turnabout, with the whole defending guilty stuff.
The fourth was a good filler case, but I was getting tired of accidental murders by then and the fifth was great, but worse than the third.
My ranking of the cases is:
3 > 5 > 1 > 4 > 2

Maybe a game that’s making me wish I didn’t stick to whole star ratings. A high-3, if only because I still don’t love Ace Attorney’s model, It’s just a little too long-winded for my visual novel tastes (the fifth chapter’s trial had me exhausted), and a little too visual-novel-y for my adventure game tastes. For me to stay engaged in a mystery where I can start to see the beats line up along a rail, but have to wait for the trolley to chug on through them all, I just need a little more momentum. The autoplaying of dialog really saved my overall experience with this game; I even opted to use the “story mode” for the final chapter just because I didn’t have the heart to play through it all myself, and I was interested in seeing how it worked.

I cannot deny, though, my experience with The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures was leagues more exciting than my time trudging through the first couple of games in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy a few years ago. Besides the aesthetic being enormously more intriguing, the “deduction” sections help break-up the investigation segments of the game so much better and I just found myself a lot less disengaged for half of the game. Herlock Sholmes clears, what can I say?

What also got me locked in here was the general politics of it all on display. The way this game is about the British Empire imposing on the world their own systems, looking down on all foreigners, especially non-white foreigners. I mean, this is basically a racism simulator. The over-arching story really grabbed me along with the over-arching vibe, so once again I am finding myself adoring the world and characters of Ace Attorney, but just not really able to get locked into the game. Does make me deathly curious how I’d feel about Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, since I really love the former’s gameplay and not the latter’s.

That really was a The Great Ace Attorney Adventures...

Great Ace Attorney is a crime-solving VN where you play young Japanese man Ryunosuke Naruhodo who has been thrust by unlikely circumstances to become a lawyer in England.

The premise is ridiculous and the game successfully walks the thin line of taking itself serious at times where it's important (with big shonen anime pathos, but serious, nonetheless) and being a playful adventure around both intriguing and wacky roundabout crime-solving mysteries with courtroom drama.

One thing I should mention here is that Great Ace Attorney ventures far more into the realm of "real-world" problmes than the other games in the series, namely, racism. You would think a wacky anime game like this is ill-equipped to take on such a heavy subject matter, but it realistically depicts how people back then (and nowadays) view other people from far removed cultures. The constant allusions to Japanese people being "just weird" almost feels like an indictment towards this sentiment in our era, where it's always about those wacky Japanese people doing wacky Japanese things without any regard for their other cultural habits and customs. I highly respect that Great Ace Attorney was willing to go there, even if it always addresses the depicted racism with some form of levity and snarky remark from Ryunosuke and doesn't just make you look at it and get too uncomfortable.

Enough heavy stuff. I feel like VNs live or die mainly by presentation and writing, which are both in my opinion
a) absolutely excellent and
b) highly subjective
but I can also commend the games on its active gameplay segments:

1) Mostly linear point & click investigation segments. These are mainly structured in a way to pace the flow of information, which, admittedly, doesn't really feel like meaningful gameplay and more of a knack in supplying information in a more exciting way but that 100% isn't meant as a detriment. Tiny bits of looking around and clicking stuff to simulate investigating a crime scene goes a long way for experiencing a story that is fundamentally built on mysteries and intrigue. Being delivered all this information passively through pure VN segments would frankly be more boring and make you feel more disconnected from the mystery at hand.

2) Deduction-based gameplay:
This is where this series truly shines. Unlike the gameplay mentioned before, these segments are strictly linear, but they always face you with a conundrum that surrounds the established facts. Does anything that has been said by a witness contradict the facts? How do you explain this or that circumstance of the case? What evidence has to be looked into further to give an answer? The genius herein lies that the game (usually) has given you a lot of information at the start of each of the deduction segments, making you anticipate the points that might crop up but also blindsiding you with details that have always been there from the first place - Yes, some revelations only come with time and you will be given decisive information very late into trials, but the way everything falls into place is always a very satisfying romp and a very engaging brain-teaser. I was flabbergasted when the final case had established and hidden a crucial detail right in the first 20 minutes of the courtroom trial, and I never noticed until it became important.

The game had me beam with joy at its writing and character the deduction segments were engaging and fun, and it's all around a wonderful experience. The worst I can say about it is that it feels too much like a mid-season-finale, almost like it sets up too much for the second game and is not interested enough in explaining its own overarching mysteries, so it ends on a rather unsatisfying note in regards to that. I have to deduct points here because the game is banking on the promise of something really good coming. I do wonder if the second game will make it all pay off, and if it does, hey, I'll be very happy, but I can't give points for promises, now can I?

i just want to state that this is currently an incomplete review as i have only played the first game but this will be updated when that happens (who knows my backlog is massive)

the first great ace attorney is a very interesting package. i really loved the first case and i think it does the nervous person doing their first ever case trope better than all of the other games. when you hear that first objection and go oh shiiiiit. its a great case. after that i felt the game was a little slow. didn't help that the second case was all investigating but i felt like my main problem was the lack of stakes. this game has 5 cases and within those 5 they pull both the accidental murder trope and the no culprit trope which im not the biggest fan of in this games COUGH COUGH* turnabout reclaimed. its still a great time and i definitely need to play the second one at some point

fundamentally a prologue for the second game I just know this is a great introduction for the entirety of the duology and I'm so here for it

as a fan of ace attorney since something like 7 years old when I used to play it on the Nintendo ds during toddler years wait what actually is a toddler fuck my not native English speaking skills are vacillating

so

as I was saying i was pretty excited to play this also because some friends hyped it for me saying these 2 games are almost as good ad ace attorney 3

another excursus

ace attorney 3 could be categorised as some of the best games I've ever played one my favourite games of all times one of the best written story I've ever experienced in the medium and I game I recommend to everyone reading this and not godot please fuck me in the ass

the absolute might of ace attorney 3 cannot be even comprehended through words its just something you need to get your hands on one way or the other and I'm 100% sure the whole hassle (if you can call it that) of going through AA1 and AA2 is worth it

definitely

so for that reason as soon as they told me this information my godot bottom senses tensed up and I was so ready to get going with this epopee

mainly a story focused game I will just say some random stuff and then get to the JUICE

gameplay is standard ace attorney with some tweaks you get some more jury during the trials that elicits some new interesting mechanics but the actual star of the show for me is holmes dance of deduction where sexy hot Mr Holmes will just play the detective and begin some random deductions here and there but you'll have to correct him to place him on the right track

and those are some great segments of the game if you ask me possibly the juiciest stuff yet

these game actually were for the 3ds so somehow theyre building on the established art direction of aa5 and aa6 but committing it into a new and totally different environment with some super slick animation great character models and really tight art style all in all its just absolutely great

the little character portraits are absolutely breathtaking like when ryuunosuke and susatos illustrations appear during the dance of the deduction I swear to goooooood my babies I love them so much forreals

but anyway this is not the important stuff because mainly this is about the characters and story beats

ryuunosuke and susato act as a great pair and I'm honestly growing really fond of susato she has the bases to be my favourite character in the game and I'm really excited to l see what they're gonna do with her I'm really a sucker for this kind of character

when you encounter her the first time she's a very strict and polite person due to the fact that she probably grew up this way but also because she has a strong and diligent personality towards the work of judicial aid and I can only be happy about that

AND SHES INTELLIGENT AS FUCK my sweet little baby

shes just a master of brainstorming and she saves naruhodos ass more than once

what I do love though is the fact that she steadily grew to open up more to naruhodo being his judicial assistant and how they formed some kind of trust bond theyre sharing and a great working pair

partially due to this is why I also love naruhodo by extension

he has that goofy little attitude of phoenix wright but unfortunately he has a huge flaw which is he doesn't get me super horny every time on screen

let's get real and serious for a second

throughout my playthrough of ace attorney 1-6 there's never been a moment where I wasn't eager to see phoenix in any way shape or form he has this dumb himbo vibes to him that absolutely bewitched me he could he saying the dumbest stuff on earth and my mind would only say "I'd choke on that"

and I don't need to remind you about the cultural impact it had on my persona and my junk the advent of hobo phoenix in my sexual maturity so I'm clearly more emotionally attached to him than ryuunosuke here but that's to be expected

so there's none of that for ryuunosuke he's a cute fella but his sex appeal didn't land for me what it did land tho is the absolutely great little character development he's showing from being an insecure young man with an identity still to define into a competent attorney with the law as his first interest

this would be also caused by the sudden

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

SPOILER FOR THE SECOND CASE

puberal growth of penis he shows I know you're still reading please go away if you didnt play TGAA/DGS

so I was saying the bereavement of asougi

asougi was and still is in some way one of my favourite character in the game (basically every single character I'm gonna say this sentence) and his sudden death was absolutely fucking sorrowful for me I really wanted him to be some more than just an excuse for naruhodos growth but really people he's wow

he's so hot I will take the opportunity while he's still warm

apart from the main japanese trio londoneers sherlock holmes and iris watson join the gang

DISCLAIMER

sherlock and iris names were changed during the localisation because copyright issues (rightfully so) but because Japan really doesn't give a shit and still puts out these kind of works i'd advise you to add a patch for the game to change the names back to their original state

even though you put this patch some kind of scripts won't be eligible for the mod so sometimes if a character screams theyre gonna be like SHOOOOOOOLMES with the censored (?) name

so yeah I still do recommend you to add the patch (also add the 60fps smoothness patch) to the game to get the full experience

END OF DISCLAIMER

sherlock and iris might be my favourite characters in this game (here is the phrase again) but forreals sherlock might be one of the most charismatic charming and irresistible characters in the entirety of the ace attorney universe

he's a big great detective who everyone knows and he takes pride in that but being that naruhodo and susato end up living with him and iris theyre gonna see some new aspects of his character that the public doesn't (need) to know

he's moody he can get easily depressed and even though he shows little to know consideration for others he actually cares for the gang and especially for the little iris to whom he acts as a fatherly figure

and also he's dangerously hot like umhhhhhhhhhhh do you all feel hot right now or is it only me thinking about sherlock holmes umhhhh no forreal tho how did they come up with this hunk of a man I'm

I'm a sucker for stupid outgoing dumb men (see above) and this guy …..
…..
this guy takes the cake he's completely ruined me no man can take his place in my life ever more

can I can I have some detective titties please

iris is also a charming one and she's definitely more than the fatherless behaviour child prodigy trope

ok maybe she is just that sometimes BUT they do work on that blueprint to deliver the character and actually make her one of the most fun personality in the entire game to be honest she's super enthusiastic and intelligent and this can be also caused of her scarred past but in some ways she managed to find in hurley a father figure and just hangs in there for the time being while looking for his father

plus she's extra cute

and one last character I want to talk about is van zieks

he's first and foremost hot

so as we already settle that I can actually add on this consideration with saying he's a really interesting personality an unmovable iron wall in the trials and one that actually can compete with edgeworth with witty remarks and snark though I can say that van zieks is even more unreadable and imperturbable throughout the entirety of the trial but in the end he's just interested in finding the truth than just finding the suspects guilty

the other characters are cute . I like the inspector more than I actually should the side characters are interesting at least and I'm not a huge fan of Gina I mean she's fine but she's not actually making me jump in joy when I see her but its fine

now the cases are all good even tho most of them don't even have investigations lmaoooo but yeah pretty much the second case is possibly my favourite one in the entirety of the game because implications

but as you would actually know this is the time for me to talk about the ost because its absolutely magical

this guys is one of the greatest opening main themes I've ever heard in my entire life every time I booted the game and this ringed in my ears I had an epiphany FORREAL WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK THE STRINGSSSSSSSS THE FUCKING STRINGSSSSSS oh my god this game

also another grand theme is asougis theme the shivers jesus fucking lord the melody in this one is breathtaking I swear

and possibly my favourite objection theme it does a GREAT JOB to pump you up for the pursuit you're gonna take this is MMMMMMMMMMM idk what the instruments at 0:34 are but good fucking lord as soon AS that part starts I just stop the game and get in the groove jesus this talent just cannot be replicated guys I swear

people I just put this song and got incredible shivers and I'm talking about susato's theme as for now susato is so dear for me and this theme is just incredibly nostalgic it manages to make me teary eyed in 20 seconds

this one's an absolute hidden gem and it's a shame its only played twice in the game this is incredible ok actually RELISTENING TO IT ? This IS EVEN GREATER WHAT THE FUCK ????? oh my god a crime this is only played twice

ok I guess thats the end but rest assured that every single character theme is great and honestly there's not a single piece of music in this fucking game that blows even holmes weird fucking violin play when it was broken

so

I cannot fucking wait to play the second game soooooo ONTO THE NEXT ONE TURURURURUURUR

this game has the pacing of my essays when im trying to reach a word limit so i just find different ways to rewrite the same sentence over and over

Case 5 is pretty good and all the characters are great but holy shit what a slog

Shu Takumi must have been smoking some good shit when he came up with the line "so this is what being an Ace Attorney is all about"

Can confirm London is just built like this

Never thought I'd see the day where I felt an Ace Attorney game's best case was the third one

This was my introduction into the beloved Ace Attorney series and (setting my British bias aside) I absolutely adored it. Every case brings a plethora of fresh and exciting characters, scenarios and damn right wacky antics. The main-stays Ryunosuke and Susato are wonderful protagonists - with the latter being one of the cutest characters OAT - and the later Iris and Sholmes are perfect companions that allow for even more of that sweet, sweet banter. [Also, the Logic and Reasoning minigame is one of the most fun I've ever played in a detective game]

I knew it was going to be a little silly, but it's astonishing how GAA can weave dark and interesting tales using such excessive and sometimes abhorrent resources, with characters looking and acting in a ridiculous manner as you unfold the mystery of a cold and calculated murder.

In all, the only thing I didn't enjoy the entire time is that some characters animations are just a little tooo much for my liking. This doesn't ruin the scene at all, I'd just prefer not to watch giant snot bubbles linger from a man's nose.

Bom Demais. Divertido pkrl.

I can't believe they did the impossible.

They made Ace Attorney even gayer.

This was worth the wait, Great Ace Attorney Adventures offers an adventure unlike anything I have seen yet in this series offering an unparalleled overarching story for this series with a gorgeous backdrop of late 1800s London. Shu Takumi proved with this game he can do writing on par with his work in the Ace Attorney Trilogy, by branching out from Phoenix Wright, to create a completely new but endearing cast of characters. The cast of characters in this game might be the most consistent in this series up to this point, not quite reaching the heights of characters such as Godot or Edgeworth, but no one in this game really stood out to me as annoying or a waste, and all of the main cast are excellently executed, with Herlock being a highlight for me with his over the top goofy antics. The gameplay mechanics are also a definitive step up from anything we have seen up to this point, with the new cross-examination mechanics along with deducing the facts with Herlock, its all incredibly engaging. One thing you have to keep in mind with this game is that you are getting half a story, unlike any other ace attorney, and you will have to play the sequel to get a lot of the answers you will understandably have on your mind, but looking past that this game gave me a remarkable story that doesn't hold back with its more mature themes for the sake of comedy, while still balancing the two well, not giving you whiplash like in previous games. I'm very excited to see where the sequel takes me on this journey.

Might be experiencing a bit of hype backlash but, I thought this game was just okay. To start with what I liked, I think there’s some really interesting ideas touched upon, many have already spoken about the depictions of anti-Japanese racism within the game but what’s more interesting is how the writing wrestles to come to terms with the rampant racism that was prevalent in this era of detective fiction that it takes so heavy inspiration from. We all have our problematic muses, and GAA is keenly aware of how romanticized the stories it looks up to are in hindsight.

Case 3 is also pretty incredible, featuring a jaw-dropping twist that calls into question one of the basic assumptions made in the series in a way that only works with Ryunosuke as the protagonist, and not Phoenix. Still, the potential fallout doesn’t quite feel fully capitalized on, leaving what could have been a truly transformative moment for Ryunosuke into a mere bump in the road.

What I end up finding myself sorely disappointed in, is the actual cases themselves. Outside of case 3, the cases featured in this game are incredibly simple and straightforward, with the writing holding your hand and all but telling you what you need to look at every step of the way. It’s the easiest game in the series, and the cases often feel incredibly drawn out. Case 5, in particular, is my least favorite final case in the entire series for how anticlimactic it is.

I’m well aware that this is meant to lead into GAA2, and from what I’ve played of 2 so far, it’s been everything I wanted 1 to be. Still, the potential for interesting explorations of ideas, and the likability of the main cast, can’t fully save the game from the dullness of the episodic cases. Not bad, but man did I feel disappointed.

very charming game that captures a lot of the magic that ace attorney 1 had. it was refreshing to enter this new world with endearing main characters that felt fleshed out and distinct from other ace attorney offerings. far and away one of the game's strongest features is its animations being a lot crisper and detailed, due to being mo-cap'd. even minor characters had little animations that i found a joy to watch.

biggest flaw with the game, for me, is the unevenness of the narrative. the pacing is very peculiar, with a third case that feels like it belongs in the fourth case's slot due to how heavily referenced it is by the fifth case. and the cast is either incredibly endearing or absolutely repugnant with basically no middleground. i love characters like susato, gina, and even sholmes, but cannot stand characters like von zieks and gregson. also, it seems like this game has a pretty heavy recurring element of racism that doesn't ever get really touched upon in a meaningful way, which is an odd choice imo. it's definitely what i would expect from 1800s britain, but it's just weird to have sooooo many microaggressions (as well as the occasional outright "i hate the japanese" esque comment) and not really make a point of having naruhodo or susato react to them in meaningful ways. in many ways, this is the most divisive cast because the great characters are stellar, while the awful characters are series lowlights.

i'm very interested to see what tgaa2 does considering how heavily this game leans into being a duology. there were a lot of unanswered questions and dangling threads i didn't expect to remain unresolved by the game's conclusion, so i'm hoping that extending them into another game means the payoff will be even better. i've heard a lot of good things in passing about tgaa2, so it'll be hard to not have high expectations. if nothing else, i was pleasantly surprised that this concept that i had next to no interest in was able to deliver a charming experience.

God FUCKING dammit Naruhodo where the FUCK are we?

There was a lot of yaoi that I had no idea existed that I discovered because of this game, I think that makes it peak

This game had all the makings to be my favourite Ace Attorney game. No psychic shenanigans. The music being the best the series has ever produced (in the four games I've played thus far). Some absolute bangers are finding them straight into a spotify playlist ASAP. This game also has my favourite supporting character in an Ace Attorney game, a Mr. Herlock Sholmes. He is fucking hilarious and grew on me far more than I initially expected. By the end of the third case I was convinced that this would top Trials and Tribulations as my favourite game in the series. However it loses a lot of enjoyment in one place in particular; very slow pacing.

Thankfully once each case gets going my grievances tend to fade away, but there are some parts in the investigation periods particularly where I just wanted things to hurry along. Also during trials some of the solutions would be glaringly obvious but you had to spend 3 minutes to let the in game characters to come to very obvious conclusions. However when this game gets good, the case is in its final stretches, the music is blaring, objections reigning out from each side, the game really scratches that Ace Attorney itch.

Gameplay wise this game also felt a lot more engaging, being able to interact and spin around pieces of evidence to discover clues that actively would be used to turn trials around, most notably an ENTIRE FUCKIN' BUS being evidence in which you can explore. My only real grievance with the mechanic would be that you don't get an indicator to show you've examined a particular area when dealing with evidence. This means that at times during trials I would miss a clue thinking I'd already pressed on that particular prompt. There is also the deductions of Herlock Sholmes which conceptually interested me but often went on longer than I wanted them too. The jury system also was a surprising addition but one that added to the gameplay. Summation soundtrack SLAPPING also helped.

Overall I really liked the game. The music is really freaking good. If you can tolerate some pacing issues here and this game is well worth playing.
