"Monster Hunter" meets "beat-'em-up RPG" with IntiCreates spritework. Interesting, but the single-player is lacking and the multi-player is dead, partly due to its pricey release scheme. Still I wish it had taken off! It had potential.

A decent coop action platformer ala Mega Man. Stages were slightly boring, but there were some cool boss fights in there.

I think this is a game that if you don't have anyone to play multiplayer with, really don't think about getting it at all. I played with just one other friend while exclusively playing witch and she's an extremely fun character, and if you like grinding missions at higher and higher difficulties kinda like Monster Hunter but with the standard Inticreates gameplay experience then it's worth playing, but otherwise it's probably not worth your time.

One of my favorite multiplayer games, but with a lot of just alright content and a post-launch content drought, DMFD is hard to recommend full price.

My review of this game is based on two experiences, I played this game co-op the whole way through, and I only used The Witch.

First off, I gotta say I love Inti Creates and their art style of keeping games with 2-D sprites and them looking beautiful and retro, I love the art style as someone who has played the Mega Man Zero series and Gunvolt.

I honestly really wish I could speak on the music, but as I said, I played co-op with a few friends so I never really got to sit and enjoy the sound track, nothing jumped out as awful except the annoying fanfare that pops up when you have the game selected on PS4.

The gameplay is that of your normal 2-D platformer or a sort of Metroidvania if you will, jump from one place to another, you can go at it vertically and horizontally, it's always a pretty big map, because this game has an RPG element to it, and you're meant to explore and fit treasure to gear your character up as well as kill enemies to level up. Nothing super special if you're familiar with Metroidvania games. Every character has a sort of playstyle that can be adjusted to your liking via stats, equipment, leveling up, or changing Contracts which changes your characters element and behavior of certain skills. The game is very mission heavy, so it's always go do this and fight this boss most of the time or go find this. I'm honestly trying to be a bit vague as somethings are just fun to discover and do on your own as you play, if this sounds interesting, then have at it.

It's very fun to go around and search the map and get new gear and build your character the way you like, as well as with a party if you go at it co-op.

This game isn't without it's flaws...

The story really takes a backseat it feels like, it's not badly written, but the game's story isn't based around the character you chose, so it's all written as a blanket dialogue meant to fit all the characters, so you'll never learn much about who you choose.

The gameplay while fun, the game does a poor job explaining things, I mean even basic things aren't told and the tips menu is filled to the brim with info that you NEED to know but are expected to search there as the game tell you little or teaches you little.

I honestly feel like the game feels very weak if you play it solo, it gets very repetitive and you can tell it wasn't built exactly for solo play and it was meant for multiplayer character synergy, and I think the characters suffer from this as well, some of their roles in a group, shoehorns some awkward styles of playing to make sure they can't be a one-man army of any kind, which is fine with me in multiplayer, but it just shows solo isn't ideal.

I can't speak on all characters as I've only played The witch and as of this review the Bandit, but the Witch requires button combos for every spell she casts, (example: B, Y, B, X, B, A to level up a spell for homing then you have to press B, X, B, X, B, X, B, X to level up the spell to it's next power, then B, B, B, B to turn it into a thunder spell.) this goes on for every spell and you pretty much have to learn to use these spells because it's pretty much most of her playstyle and she's a healer and support as well, so yeah that gets tiring. I'm sure other characters have their quirks, but that's just an example.

Also it's one of those games that has loadouts before missions, so you have to go to one place to change this and another to change that, it's not a super big deal, but it does lead to some annoying moments, this even happens offline as well.

All-in-all I hope it didn't come off as a negative review, I loved this game and had a lot of fun, it just had quite a few snags that could be improved with a second game. I can easily recommend this as a co-op game with friends, but I can't say the same for solo, it's doable but I can't see someone enjoying it unless it's in small bursts. This game really deserves more coverage than it got and really could use a sequel.

More like Dragged Through the Dirt Dead

Cool artstyle but it's a very rare L for Inti Creates. Did not think it would be possible for Inti Creates to make a bad 2D action platformer but here we are.

A bump in the road in the grand scheme of things thankfully.

Inti Create said go make some friends. Ones you can touch. At least Empress is pretty cute. Please give Toru Nakayama some more work and like tell him to make a twitter or like update his pixiv or something

This is a game that was stuck in development hell for about a decade after originally being planned for the PSP, and BOY does it play exactly how you would expect!

Decent idea but the execution kind of blows. Perfectly responsive and functional on the player side for sure, but the level design is snooze inducing and the enemies and bosses are largely quite boring to fight. The arguably challenging content is all post game, but it's gated behind an obscenely tedious gear grind loop that will have you mindlessly repeating boring trash content for many hours. I got the fuck out of dodge shortly after beating the story, but I highly doubt that any of that post game content comes close to being worth the shitty gameplay loop required based on how subpar the game was up to that point.

It's co-op but honestly who gives a shit with gameplay this barebones and inexpressive. Also it's pretty ugly, imagine sub Rockman ZX quality art stretched 100 times thinner.

Basically inti's worst game. Music and character designs are nice though.

Horribly monotonous and blandly designed.

Waited with playing this until I could convince someone else to play it with me but the level design, the enemies, the bosses, the overall gameplay loop where you have to quit out of co-op to go get items in shops that feel randomly thrown on a map… it feels like it wants to be monster hunter so bad but then absolutely fails when it comes to providing a smooth, fun co-op experience… and I’ve heard solo it’s just a spongefest of enemies. It looks nice I guess, the art is on point, but that’s about it. Feel free to skip.

I love the game but it has alot of grinding and it's best played with friends, which can be hard to set up. Id still recommend it though.

I'm a huge Inti Creates fan, and I really like everything about this game, but man is the balance for solo play terrible. Everything is 2-3x as spongy as it needs to be, which makes some of the later missions just boring to play.

Despite the many mixed reviews I saw before playing this game, it ended up being a pretty decent time. I will say though that you should NOT play this game by yourself. This is best enjoyed with one other friend at least, and I think you'll get the most out of it that way.

The gameplay is varied and distinct between each of the classes. I chose the Shinobi, and his mobility really made getting around a whole lot easier. I can see how backtracking through levels could get really annoying, as I saw my friend, who played Witch, having to experience. It was fun locking onto enemies and spamming them with attacks. It really comes in handy.

There isn't too much in level or enemy variety, which is the main reason I think playing this game solo could be an absolute slog. Having those other players there to work with you and take on bosses really enhances the experience a lot. There's definitely plenty they could do to make the gameplay better if they ever make a sequel. I think getting rid of some of the tedium in level variety and structure would help a lot. And just ironing out all the little janky things for quality of life.

I still enjoyed my time though, and I think this series has a lot of potential if they ever make a sequel (which I would actually love). There's more I could say but I think that's enough. I think half the price it currently is is good for this game. Also, like I said before, a great one with friends.

this game is weird but I kinda dig it? not sure if it's just cause I like Inti games cause otherwise I'm trying really hard to vibe with what this game wants to be but something just isn't quite clicking. I think this game was supposed to be a PSP game and that just feels so right.

2d Monster Hunter with less to do (and that's not a bad thing). Structure and purchasing scheme aside, this game does a few things right: the inticreates aesthetic has been winnowed down to a tee, there's decent selection of classes/items/doodads to find and the multiplayer makes it feel genuinely exciting to speed run through levels together. The single player experience is lacking, but not exactly a disaster. Keep your expectations in check and there's plenty to like here.

A very fun, visually beautiful, and engaging 15-25 hour single player game mauled beyond recognition by its bizarre insistence that it's an MMO.

Divertido para jugar multiplayer, gab me dejó tirado como siempre

The rare Inti L. So much potential that just never got to be due to development hell. I'm really hoping a sequel happens that just revitalizes this concept because its such an insanely good idea on paper.

Awful, awful game. The main idea is that you go on Monster Hunter-like quests and complete an objective all while leveling up your characters. However, not only are a majority of the objectives garbage in their own right, you basically only go to 5 places and it geets tiring quick. In ADDITION, the game is extremely vague about the main way to progress in the game-- flags. Flags are gotten by doing some totally random, arbitrary, impossible thing to figure out without extreme trial and error or a guide. Beyond that, the game's level's are designed horribly and don't accommodate for the fact that you may be playing alone or with others, which makes the game imbalanced, the music is extremely forgettable, the story is godawful and the most ham-fisted "NO RACISM" plot I've ever seen in a game. The ONLY good things DMFD features some gameplay ideas for the main cast (the Witch) and their designs. Otherwise, literally everything else is terrible. Go play something worth your time.

A terrible hybrid between a Metroidvania in level design & Monster Hunter in combat, alongside a stupid barrier of entry via the 2 packs available for digital download.
