Another pure-concentrate dose of Gameplay similar to [but tonally distant from] Ynglet, truly the Good Stuff. The sensation of the boomerang mechanics really gives this a completely new feel though. It was initially awkward for me, but when I got comfortable with warping and recalling the feeling was truly unlike anything else. And it's, for the most part, impeccably designed. Enemies that seem like useless "fodder" evolve into tools for building up your weapons of destruction; enemy types immediately test your understanding of new gameplay wrinkles, and change up and interact with one another to keep things fresh. The combat in this almost feels illegal for how much adrenaline it provokes effortlessly, and it's wonderful that it's so tightly put together and well-paced.
The final boss is where it kind of lost me though, since I personally don't think it plays to the game's strengths, which is to say that specific spatial awareness in the final room is brutal in a way that I didn't find interesting or fun to overcome. The individual details of the fight are mesmerizing, but there's at least one too many of those details, and I just found it frustrating since the game didn't properly build to it for me. But at the end of the day I don't think it matters too much, for it's still that rare form of joy that excitedly shoots the nerves.

Managed to get two thirds of the way through before the intensity got to me. I like difficult games with quick restarts, but X will have you routinely making it to the last few waves before wiping out. As much as I wished there were mid-level checkpoints, there’s just no way the developers intended it to be played that way or else they’d been readily implemented. Shame as it totally would’ve been the thing to keep me going til the end.
If I could describe this game with one word, it'd be the word tight. Tight controls, tight gameplay, tight pacing, tight level design, tight length. My only issues with it were the fact that it was really short and it being really easy aside from the final few encounters. I also had some weird frame pacing/stuttering issues but I'm not sure if it's the game's fault or not.
Very fun idea that kind of wears on you towards the end. I'm relatively new to movement shooters so I end up making a lot of mistakes, which while normally not bad is frustrating due to the Boomerang X's overall messy UI with too many particle effects. The final boss in particular took me a long time to actually finish simply because the edges of the arena deal damage but it was hard to tell if I was flying into them or not. Good idea, execution desires more.
This game is sick. It is essentially a series of arena's where you face waves of enemies with just your boomerang. You only have to kill a handful of the enemies though so you get the fun of facing a horde of enemies without the tedium of killing them all. What makes the game great though is the mobility you get. You quickly get the abilities to jump to your boomerang and slow down time which allows you to practically fly. It's stupidly fun and satisfying to fly across the room to get behind an enemy and hit their weak point using the time slow. The enemy variety and arena variety is also quite good notably.
I wanted to give the game 4 stars, but their are a couple issues with the switch version. The first problem is that the camera controls on pad feel quite rough. It feels like I don't quite have the precision I want. The gyroscope controls do alleviate this issue though. The second problem I had was that the game crashed on me TWICE at the same exact moment during the final boss. I didn't attempt third time after that, so maybe it was a coincidence, but fool me twice ya know. I imagine these problem aren't really a thing on the PC version though.
