The game that started it all. As is often the case, it's been done better since (eg Metroid: Zero Mission), but this is a pretty good metroidvania too

The elderest of elder god tier games. Metroid perfected. 2D Platform Adventure gaming perfected. Perfect game.

this game rules, but has anyone ever considered the backtracking might be a.... little too much? also there's areas where without a guide you're straight up boned.

If three decades later you're STILL the best game in the genre YOU made and everyone is copying, you deserve an automatic perfect score.

I thought replaying this would be a nice way to kill time in the lead-up to the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, and well, it’s still six days to go until Final Fantasy VII Remake. As for Super Metroid, it wasn’t as fun as I remembered it, but I think I had been a bit spoiled by Samus Returns, which allows you teleport around the map rather than requiring so much backtracking. I still like the sense of exploration Super Metroid provides, and I think it’s particularly good-looking 16-bit era game, but I’m not sure if I had as much playing it as I’d hoped. The controls, at least on the Switch controls, could be a bit finicky, and the amount of back-tracking made the game feel artificially longer. Obviously, it’s a Super Nintendo classic for a reason, but it was my mistake to play a game like Samus Returns directly before playing a game that preceded it by a good 23 years.

For a game rapidly coming up on its 3rd decade of existence, the amount of template setting for modern 2D games is simply marvelous. The controls are starting to show age, but the experience is a classic, as you wind through a tightly paced, claustrophobic enviroment, finding new tools and vanquishing harder foes. A pioneer.

Deeply underwhelming given what came before. I guess having a map is nice, but it feels like it just leads to even more backtracking? And the whole world feels much less alien and hostile than Metroid (or even Prime, for that matter).

Hot take: hella overrated! I got to the final section, and then I guess I didn’t have enough missiles, so the stupid thing just killed me before I could kill it? I abandoned the game. The fact that the core of the gameplay mechanic is endless backtracking and finding powerups by blindly firing at the wall is a problem for me. Clearly massively important to the development of games. But a drag to play today.

I loved this game as a kid (the Mother Brain fight is a fond memory), but every time I play it as an adult I just like it less and less. The map design is very disjointed and Samus just doesn't feel fun to play as.

Great game. It has a lot of bullshit and it makes me very angry but it's a great game.

quite possibly the best super nintendo game

Um dos pais do gênero, difícil encontrar um defeito nesse jogo

Made me fall in love with Metroid and metroidvanias as a genre. The game that all similar ones try to recapture, and for good reason.
6 Trons

Ok this game is good, and I've played it so many times, but I just can't get around the controls and I've done many speed runs of this game. My best time for this game is 50 minutes IGT any %, which I'm super proud of, but a lot of my movement was fucked over because the control is just super awkward. This isn't only in terms of a speed run either. Just normally playing this game, I find that I struggle to perform the most basic actions, and it really ruins the game for me. The level design is amazing though, and I love the atmosphere this game has.

i can never forgive my brother for taking the snes and later selling it alongside my copy of this game. it's great. physics get whack sometimes

Man, this game holds up. Would have been 5 stars if not for the SAND.

I played this game for the first time this year and it is simply one of the best games ever made.

literally the only video game i'd call "perfect"

Quite possible the best video game ever made. The amount of incidental nuance in the gameplay set a standard that's still rarely matched, and the emphasis on atmosphere and isolation provide a template other games have failed to follow. It also manages, somehow, to offer a beautiful statement on motherhood. Gunpei Yokoi was yanked from this world far too soon, but in his time with us, he gave the us the greatest work of art that necessitates a controller.

god tier gameplay and atmosphere, many games have tried to replicate its style but none can match this one. zero mission is better tho lol
