I have fond memories as a kid of seeing this game in arcades and theaters and was always in awe of it's haunting aura.
Finally beating it and getting #1 on the local score rankings in my local arcade was one of my proudest moments as a adolescent.
Sadly it's becoming more and more rare to find these arcade cabinets anymore because it's "too violent" I assume.
Regardless if I ever see one of these in public I'll never hesitate to give it a go.

I want a new sequel or a remake of this game PLEASE!!

The pure definition of a quarter-muncher but I don't care this game's badass

Got the sinden lightgun today so like, OF COURSE I'd go straight to the kino.

I spent about an hour of troubleshooting just to ultimately run through the game with borders that covered up the edges (which made the second boss a bit tough) and a cursor I couldn't remove that was offset from where the gun was actually pointing. Still finished it though because it's House of the Dead. And House of the Dead is still huge fun.
Like listen to this and try telling me the experience isn't worth it: https://youtu.be/9RgXbb3ne24

Great start to a great series. still its far from the best in the series.

an arcade experience like no other

House of the Dead is not a perfect game, but a lot of what holds it back is its nature as a quarter eating arcade game. A lot of the time there is no way to avoid damage, save survivors or get the precious few helpful items in the game without replaying it over and over again

But if you can get past that (such as with a home port) it is a blast to play. Action is fast, shooting zombies feels fun, there are tons of creative moments in the game, and the voice acting & story is so bad that it's awesome. I love this game to bits.

Really fun time, awesome visuals and sounds, I beat the entire thing with my cousin in a random arcade at a beach. It cost A LOT of quarters.

The main fault of this game is that it is extremely cheap often, there are so many moments that are just straight up bullshit, added just to fuck you over and make you spend more.

Also top tier voice acting. Don't expect to get through this without dying a lot, there will be countless cheap deaths, but despite this, it can be a fun time.

most pure video game ever made. shoot da zombie

dialogue is so kino it hurts. "I will destroy everything" - last boss

The House of the Dead is far more difficult than I remembered, and made me wish I had two lightguns. Goofy fun.

What an arcade game! Taking that gun and shooting all kind of zombies in a spooky house was elite, especially because it was possible to play it in two player mode. I've never managed to get to the end because everytime the credits went out at some point sadly.

distinct memories goin down the shore with my cousins and saying made up swear words at the second boss when dad was off tryin to win us free candy

i like the part where you shoot the zombie with cool music

LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOOOOO

I totally slept on this game a lot as I wasn't really into light gun games enough to try to actually finish this and I'm so glad I finally got around to making the actual attempt because this game is fun as HELL dude. Gameplay is balanced between aiming well and having a crazy trigger finger and it feels awesome to just rapid blast 6 rounds right into a zombies face. The game has a lot of "gotcha" moments to munch quarters for sure but those combined with the large amounts of alternate paths and secrets to shoot at really just means it's a game that you gotta learn the ins and outs of to actually finish. I basically did at least one run a day until I could actually finish it within the continue and life restrictions the game puts, and I'd honestly rec playing that way. When I can still have this much fun even on the butchered Saturn port that looks and runs pretty chunkily shows how good the game is. The OST also is a lowkey banger. If I ever see the arcade machine for this game again, it's an absolute on-sight play. THIS GAME OWNS

I spent one summer as a student living in a dorm that for some reason had this in the basement. Me and my friends spent a disproportionate amount of time playing this and it wasn't bad at all! As a light-gun game with very little in the way of mechanics besides 'shoot stuff', a lot of its appeal came down to its atmosphere, which was equal parts intensely violent and entertainingly schlocky.

A fantastic arcade shooter that's not afraid of being hokey and goofy. House of the Dead would start a legacy of awesome rail-shooting action in a way where they want you to feel like you're the star of a zombie-slaying action movie! Or co-star, if you play with a friend. The game has a hefty number of beginner's traps, but many of them are definitely manageable if you have good reaction timing.

That remake is probably going to suck ass.

Games bullshit as hell but you get a cool gun so who's to say how good it is

For me, The House of the Dead 2 is the quintessential light gun shooter, but I do have some nostalgia for the original House of the Dead as well, having played it in a number of arcades over the years. Next to Turtles in Time, I might be the most prolific cabinet I've seen, though the first time I recall encountering it was in some dive bar my dad dragged me to during a road trip I vaguely remember. Later that night we went to a circus. This whole day exists in my mind like a faintly remembered fever dream, but if there's one positive to going to bars that had arcade cabinets, it was that my dad would get real loose with his money after getting a couple drinks in him.

The House of the Dead is pretty fun for what it is. The first three levels have branching paths that are dependent on what enemies attack you, background objects you shoot, or civilians you save or don't save. Adding to the replay value is a new Saturn Mode which lets you pick between six different characters, all with their own stats. The last of the four levels is a total slog, though, lacking in the non-linearity of the previous levels and mostly being a boss rush with some dull action sequences to break up each fight. It also culminates in a very spongy final boss that feels very underwhelming to fight.

The cutscenes and bits of character dialog you get are fantastic. Some of the absolute worst line delivery in gaming, and I love it. Much like the gameplay, however, I feel this is something that's even better in the sequel. If anything, The House of the Dead's greatest flaw is that the follow up outshines it in pretty much every way. Not that a short and sweet run through the original is a bad time or anything, but for me playing this was almost an obligation. I have a working CRT, a Sega Saturn, and a light gun. I paid my money, at this point not playing The House of the Dead would be downright weird.

The spookiest use of light gun arcade tech ever. Suck it, Time Crisis.

about 1000 times better than remake. looks better, feels snappier, doesnt feel like it's trying to troll me nearly as much somehow? boss on stage 3 sucks SOOO much less here. the boss on stage 4 still sucks but at least it didnt take me an eternity to kill it. that said virtua cop 2 is better

completed in default settings

Just beaten this with a friend and I have to say that I’m impressed with some of the visuals. Like the final boss’s character design is one I almost never see in games and wish for it more.

A classic of 90s arcade coin munchers. Has a number of cheap spots to steal a few lives from you, but overall it holds up well and the soundtrack is secretly incredible (but you would barely be able to hear it at the arcades)

It can't get much higher than a 4/5 because it's House of the Dead and although it is really fun, there isn't a whole lot to it outside of what you see in the first level. It's an arcade game, so that's fine, just doesn't get that perfect video game score.

"I think this is the security card."

Grabs card that says "SECURITY CARD" on it

me playing this on an emulator
yah go ahead take all my money iam so rich

This game brings back so much memory. It really gave haunting vibes back then. I enjoyed playing it in repeat mode. The second boss gave me nightmares.
