AlphaOne2's Sight & Sound List

Master List: https://www.backloggd.com/u/Pangburn/list/sight--sound-master-list?page_comments=2&page=2

Just five minutes before making this list I finally looked up what all these "Sight & Sound" lists actually were for. So why not throw my ten games in too?
In terms of what I'm judging on, I'm looking for the capacity of player expression and/or the ambition of the title and how much it exceeds on what it sets out to do. Some games here have incredible player expression, some have grand aspirations, some have both. By "player expression" it's essentially the amount of "freedom" available to the player; how someone's first playthrough will differ compared to another's first.
If this sounds odd, I'll just sum it up like this: These games are great and should be played by everyone. Obviously not everyone would like these ones, but they'd be some of the first games I'd recommend to someone based on my personal interests.

I believe Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is the more iconic one with how unique it was at it's initial release, but V has more satisfying gameplay which, to me, makes it the better candidate.

Ah crap, I left out a big thing for this list. My favorite game of all time is Kingdom Hearts II, but the reason I didn't add it to this list is that I wanted to avoid games where its expected to have played a previous entry to get the most out of it. This partially goes for Final Fantasy IX too, its a self-contained story yet it also has references upon references of previous Final Fantasy games. Playing previous entries is by no means a requirement, but you gain quite a appreciation to it if you did, thus I chose more self-sufficient games above it. That said it was close, but man choosing only ten games was tough.

It's too late now, but I just realized that what I said about not including Kingdom Hearts II and Final Fantasy IX could also be applied to New Vegas. To be fair... no one played Fallout 1 & 2, and if you say otherwise then you're lying.
No in all seriousness, New Vegas is still great without playing the older entries. The tipping point for me when it came to Final Fantasy IX was that it was a celebration and last hurrah to the old classic style of Final Fantasy. And a celebration like that is way more effective to those who are at least familiar with the previous entries, even if as I said IX is still great as a stand-alone game.
