Steam Next Fest Autumn 2023: Demos Ranked by Enjoyment

This is the best next fest season I've done, lotsa bangers.

1-5: Don't know when and how, but we WILL be playing
6-12: Wishlisted
13-20: Probably not for me, but I see what you're going for and I respect that
21-27: Undercooked, but there's a potential for turnaround
27-30: Avoid...

BIG day for RPG maker girlies because Square Enix decided to give one of those a budget. And it's fucking peak. It's so charming, gorgerous and mystifying. It looks on the whole other level from stupid "HD-2D" style Square has coined. The life sim parts are lovely, phantasmagoria of horror sequences is executed perfectly. AND it's yuri??? I'm kinda blown away. Where did this even come from??
Shaping up to be both more personal and more grandiose than the first game, and developments on puzzle mechanics are wonderful. Croteam might be absolved of the crime that was making Serious Sam 4
The Russian Empire is crumbling before the revolution while you're taming the fiends of Slavic folklore like they're pokemon. You immediately become buddies with Grigoriy Rasputin and the first thing you do is point out what a fucking whore he is. You beat the shit of soldiers deserting from Russo-Japanese war. It's fucking COOL

I couldn't get into Rabi-Ribi, but this might be exactly the refinement I needed. The devs really fucking get how to structure a great metroidvania – they get so much mileage even out of basic bomb ability, and there's a constant stream of new combat moves and fun trinkets to play with throughout the demo. Tasteful character design is another positive. Loved it!
One of the coolest takes on 3D platforming I've seen, nothing but praise for early game playing parts. Humor can be a bit of a groaner, but you also fight fossil fuels so it's all good really.

Haven't engaged with tower defense games in a long time so it might be just nothing special for those versed in the genre, but this was a cool short burst. The map I tried was full of those loveable bottlenecks which are fun entrench your defenses in. Your own gunplay feels really great. Because the sessions are so short, it looks to reward conservative straight to the point buildouts where you have to get the most out of every trap and deployable object. Very much digging what it's going for.
I'm sorry for being a Love Live secondary, but where is Maki Nishikino? Tojo Nozomi? Why for the love of God we can't Nico Nico Niiii? What's even the fucking point?

For real though this one of the better playing Inti games I tried. It does a cool thing where character summons acts both as attacks and metroidvania unlocks, and there seems to plenty of weapon variety. It's fun! I've already seen people saying the game is better than anime it's based on and I agree (I didn't watch the anime)
What if Touhou but cooperative boss rush that serves to evoke MMO raiding. A respectful proposition as I can see how fun the coordinated dodging/bullet cancelling might become. Couldn't find open lobbies though so I had to test it alone...
I'm always to partial to games with multitasking elements, and here you have to simultaneously control the little guy and manipulate environment to progress, which is already more engaging than most cinematic platformers I played. Perspective switching is another aspect that might go in interesting directions. Short demo, but quite promising and intriguing.
Moomins are cute Finnish mascots who are very dear to people in Northern and Eastern Europe. This is grandma's cooking for me. Snufkin is an anarchist icon who says ACAB.
Was more or less expecting a cartoony boomer shooter... Turns out it's more of a melee-based stealth immersive sim? You have to use environment a lot and think on your feet when you get in a skirmish. It's rad
Boomer shooter with a 'tude but you play as a girl. Demo doesn't show much, but the level you try is a very solidly designed urban location. Main character's quips are so bad and cheesy they immediately revert into being charming. Absolutely not breaking any new grounds, but I quite liked it.
A spatial puzzle game where the level layout is drawn on two-sided pieces of paper and you create new paths for your little guy by folding sides and corners of the list. Lovely! Seems a bit too easy to bruteforce though
PowerWash Simulator but awesome. Already it's full of bits of neat environmental storytelling potentially interspersed with personal drama, so washing stains doesn't feel like hollow exercise in obsessive-compulsive gratification. Not my thing, but I quite respect what it's going for. (Let's assume that AI voiceacting is just a placeholder)
Neat that the game so well-conditions you to cooperate with 9 other people. Unfortunately, I'm a Dota player
One Step From Eden turned into an online battler and theoretically I like it this way more. The first time I got matched with a real player I got my guzno whooped. I might not be very good at it...

Not an enjoyer of these cinematic platformer types usually, but this one was sweet. Very pleasant narration, and the flying-gliding traversal ensures that the world is actually fun to get around. Yet again not exactly my style of game, but you might love this.
Appealing premise of a shooter where you're playing as a tank nearly invincible to damage, and it seems to deliver? Ran like complete ass on my computer though. Also, ACAB includes Robocop and I'm sorry
It's aight... but you need an incredible soundtrack to make a remarkable rhythm game, even if it's a battle royale. This is not a remarkable rhythm game
Down to mechanical minutia it's really cool – I especially like the risk-reward of having to rollslam into enemies to cancel their special attacks. But structurally it's a roguelike twin-stick wave shooter with autogenerated arenas... And I just can't see myself invested in that however well it nails down the game feel. Sorry.
Kicking people into spikes and make them trip on ice is all good immersive sim fun, but really there's no kernel here right now... It's basically a polished up tech demo so it might find the core hook if it gets through the finish line
TONY HAWK ON UNICYCLES? ARE YOU /J OR /SRS ?
The game definitely has a lot of fun with its premise, but controls are so uhh, I could barely even finish the tutorial. If it came out in 2015 people would be wondering if this is Frog Fractions 2
Turnip boy should get better material :\
A weird demo where's just, not a single thing got to breathe? You've got a gravitation gimmick that amounted to easy as hell platforming section, you get taught dodge offset when you only have basic ass x x x combo, there's dialogue sprinkled everywhere that doesn't establish anything and only serves as banter for the sake of banter, you've got a boss with only one attack, etc. Whether there is a hook, this demo fails to present it.
This is trying to be both momentum Sonic and boost Sonic, and it's showing the dangers of mixing two philosophies because it's really really not good at being either
I get it; games with emergent problem solving undermine themselves with signposted predetermined answers. The thing is, I'm not convinced that no design is the solution to overdesign.
Look, another unreal game that runs like garbage! The car handles fine, but the game is unfocused, empty and not even pretty. Nothing to find here unfortunately
This is the most unreal engine 3 ass looking thing ever and I say this with affection. Otherwise it's just a roguelike shooter, pleasure over enjoyment. There are better ways to get your cheap dopamine hits. Have you tried spicy food?
She think she luna nights 💀

I tried. Had this issue: https://steamcommunity.com/app/835960/discussions/0/3879345465240821550/

My DirectX is updated. Tried everything the devs suggested in the thread, nothing worked. =/ Apparently it's some programming shanenigans and they are working on it. I supposed it should be fixed in a day 1 patch.

tbh Deep Rock Survivor automated way too much in general
