Over 10 years ago, I always watched my older brother play games on his PC. He also introduced me to gaming in general and this was one of the first games I saw him play. I don't remember much but this game and its soundtrack were stuck in my head for many years until I started playing video games myself on my parents' computer. As Cave Story is free to download, it was the first game I played and I enjoyed every minute of it, even though I didn't understand much of the story.
Since then, I replayed it a few times and I never got bored of it. Furthermore, I am also grateful for it as it popularised Indie games which in my opinion feel more personal and made with love than AAA games.

This game may not be completely perfect and has some flaws, but it has been one of the best experiences I have had with a game. I love that the difficulty of the game isn't just overcome by a typical skill tree that gives you big advantages. But instead, the main way to make it easier is to play the game and get good at its mechanics.
I also think the lore is very interesting and makes you want to find out more about it as it's not directly told by just playing the game.
The soundtrack is also amazing and the magnificence of it is emphasized by the absence of music outside of boss fights and the firelink shrine.
I'm currently at my first NG+ run and the game doesn't bore me yet and I can imagine playing it again 10 more times.
Personally, I think they could have made NG+ more interesting by adding more to it or giving duplicate items more purpose instead of just harder enemies and better versions of rings.
That's not a big problem for me though, as the game itself is very enjoyable, even after many playthroughs
