Games of the Year - 2004

Thus far maybe my favorite year in gaming, uh, ever in terms of stuff I've actually played enough to rank? Thousand Year Door and Pikmin 2 are Top 5 level games (even if one might be bumped out soon) and Trails in the Sky FC is RIGHT up there. Imperishable Night? A great Touhou game that delivered the dual character gimmick. Sacred Stones? Less killer story than FE7 but I love the class system changes, and while Swordcraft Story 2 failed to live up to the original it still has plenty of its own great vibes. And the remakes! Games like Metroid: Zero Mission and Pokemon LeafGreen took older games and modernized them without losing their essence, with LeafGreen still coming back to me as a comfort game more than I'd care to admit.

The scary thing is how many great games are still in my backlog: Metal Gear Solid 3, Mega Man Zero 3, Knights of the Old Republic II, Half-Life 2, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, Spider-Man 2 and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes are just a few of the games from this year in my backlog. I've heard 2004 often called one of the best years in gaming and with what I've seen so far it is hard to disagree!

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
Underrated as fuck game, especially because most people play the kinda stinky gameplay-wise 3D remake. Sure the isometric view isn't always perfect, but the storyline is super crisp (I love the Riku Replica character who goes through a pretty complex one game arc), the Action RPG / Card Game hybridization is quite unique and it has great visuals on the GBA plus a killer soundtrack! Really, just go ahead and listen to the first version of The 13th Struggle we ever got to hear ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt1KcUyke0g ) and go off.

A great memory I have as a kid is having my battery be low against the final boss, who is a slow and epic grindy type, and trying my best and hurry to defeat him before they ran out. Worth smiling over.
