Ugly duckling : "appears very unpromising but later becomes beautiful or successful"
Aka, games currently (or at one point) widely considered 'black sheep' of their series, but that I (personally!! as in me, myself & I) find beautiful in their own different ways. Standalone games can fit, too, if we follow this expression.
