It's all here: asset re-use, kickin remixes, a soaring difficulty curve, and infinite continues. All the things we want to see in a Classicvania.
The branching paths are really neat, even if they don't branch very far. Second mention to the kickass remixes, they are so good. Gets really hard at the end, but nothing I'd consider to be unfair (but stage 4's boss is shamefully tedious).

If you could backflip, this would be my favorite Classicvania.

This was the first game I played through after HDMI modding my Wii, and, um, how come this game has a bilinear filter over all of the game? But the pause menu and title screen is crispy clear? Can I turn off the bilinear filter please? What about 240p maybe? No?

Also: this game has a penchant for using really inappropriate sound effects. Dracula rereads some lines from the end of SOTN, skeletons make Ape Escape noises when they throw bones, it's pretty cute.

ん、𝙸𝚝°𝚜 𝚊 𝚂𝙾𝙽𝚈!!
So very much wordier than the first half!
I can't help but feel like the order of the episodes between both games could have been arranged a bit better. Mika's disappearence may have been a great cliffhanger, but the high personal stakes of that story made the next three episodes feel sort of limp in comparison. The phone episode was particularly lame.
Taken individually, each story (phone caller aside) is pretty strong. I also like Yukari's overarching plot thread even if it's kind of simple.
The girls are still just as oddly believable as always: poking fun and chastising each other whenever they're not in the face of certain death. You don't see serious stories attempt to have such relatable characters like this very often. They really take every opportunity to pal around and tease each other.
Because the stories are so much lengthier this time, failure was much more punishing. The lack of mid-dialogue saves means that you either waste time, cheese with savestates, or consult the excellent guide at riroa.com. This game must have been hell back when it released, because either my reading comprehension is crap or the answers that will get you killed are very hard to spot.
The automatic text advance from the first half is gone though, so you can at least proceed at your own pace.
The audio designer is still clearly putting in the most overtime: really stand out sounds and ambiance start to finish.
Overall, a lot of well done scary stories.

Adorable.
Definitely a small scale spiritual sequel to Moon Remix RPG.
Kind of overstays it's welcome in the endgame when it expects you to re-check the upper floor repeatedly and it stops giving good hints.
ムッピョタノヒー

People keep saying that this game is more fun in multiplayer and I strongly disagree. Unlike Mario 3D World, it's almost impossible for players to directly interact with each other. You almost can't contribute to each other's successes or become each other's downfall. It feels like whoever has the camera is setting the pace of the game, and whoever else is there is basically just getting the extra coins and politely waiting for their turn to have the camera. The game is fun in single player, but in multiplayer it feels like you're just asking your friends to sit next to you on the couch and watch you play. Worse, the drumroll when you ground pound, the power up appearing noise, and especially the voices of the flowers feel patronizing and juvenile so it's hard to feel comfortable making a friend watch you play bing bing wahoo.

Don't get me wrong, I love this game. Alone. With headphones.

Hit and miss.
Spends an embarrassing amount of time trying to recapture Psychonauts 1's campground aesthetic, never does so perfectly. Sometimes strikes out on its own, doesn't do that amazingly well either.
A few of the minds are very well made, a few of the character stories are profoundly touching. A few of the minds are just as bad as the Stratego board, some of the central characters are extremely bland.
They tried to vary the combat a lot more, but it still feels just as wonky as it ever did, so putting more attention into the combat was probably a mistake.
The voice actors all do a fantastic job portraying their characters, but everyone talks so much that you either have to stop and wait for each one to say their full line or just deal with them cutting each other off, a problem from the first game that is much, much worse this time around. In particular Raz is way chattier during gameplay than before and I suspect that he cut off mission critical dialogue a few times because other characters would talk to me as if I'd already had the goal of the level explained to me.
They succeeded in developing the ideas in the original Psychonauts in all directions, but they should have cut some out and focused their efforts on the others instead I think.

Extremely comfy
Extremely obtuse

It's amazing how much more enjoyable 3D Mario becomes if you scale it down to a group of bite-sized courses and ditch the boot-out mechanic.

Pros: everyone is always down to try this one
Cons: there's not a whole lot to try

This game is probably too unremarkable to ever get translated, but I enjoyed it. The reading level is above what you get from the average Squaresoft JRPG so it makes for a nice challenge. All dialogue outside of the MC is voiced too, which makes for good listening practice.

Also there's a reference to Holy Mountain. The fact that someone in Japan saw that movie is really funny to me. The fact that that person then used Holy Mountain to reveal a character trait in his eroge vn is fucking hilarious.

I'm sure that the correct timing for the button presses is not directly shown on the bar at the top, but I think that bar is also not consistently off beat either?
It's almost as good as Um Jammer Lammy though.

I got like ten minutes into this game before there was a button prompt that said "steal credit card" and I thought to myself "I think if someone sees me playing this it will be considered a hate crime" and I turned off my PS2.

Definitely a unique experience!

Sound design is really creepy and the amount of interactivity on offer is kept very ambiguous most of the time. Text crawl is relentlessly fast, and some dialogue choices seem to be on offer for only a short moment before becoming unavailable, so if you can't read Japanese about as fast as its spoken then you're gonna get familiar with your emulator's pause button.

The girls behave in a weirdly believable way, like even when they're investigating what is definitely a haunted area they still banter with each other sometimes.

I get the feeling that nothing in Kyuumei Hen is going to actually explain any of what's happened, it seems like the game's first priority is being atmospheric rather than telling a complete story.

Prox chat is really funny in any game it's in
I can still hear the nightcore remix of Rockefeller Street echoing down the hallways of the asylum

I wish that Japanese audio was an option so that people nearby wouldn't know what I'm playing

Do you think Yoko Shimomura considers Finny Fun to be her career's lowest low?
