As a game it's awful, but it clearly is on purpose.

This is a hilarious piece of political satire, where Bruce Lee's relative CHIN wipes out mainland China's entire population... oh but China's secret weapon is coming to stop him: a revived Deng Xioping (he was alive when this game was made lmao).
This game is so offensive, it's like the grandfather of the many offensive newgrounds flash games.

Play it, just to experience the madness. Be careful though, you may get 我愛北京天安門, 天安門上太陽升 stuck on your head.

Jeez everything wants to kill Silver Surfer. And I thought the whole town trying to kill Dr. Jekyll was like bullet hell.
Everything OHKOs you and enemies are fast with wacky patterns, still... the game is great and it has a great reward system: survive and you get to listen to the amazing soundtrack, which is one of the best on the NES.

I couldn't finish a single stage lmao
You definitely need a turbo button to have a chance.

I know it's unfinished...But how did they come up with a worse game than the first cheetahmen???

It's half the first strand type game (as dr. Jekyll) and half a shmup (as Hyde).

Honestly not as bad as I remembered. The first time I played it I just made fun of the game with my best friend. Even if we knew the mechanics from yt videos we just sucked at it.

Now I made it pretty far, but the game throws so much shit at you it's like a bullet hell, so I just quit.

Some times the screen is filled with literal shit, bombs, spiders, and the worst enemy: women running at you. Other times it's a walking simulator.

I can see why it's not well received but it's definitely not one of the worst games of all time. Maybe it's one of the most misunderstood games of all time. It can be hard and frustrating but I like the dynamic of trying to get as far as you can before turning into Hyde, then if you kill enough monsters as Hyde you return where you were with (mostly) full health. There's infinite continues too from what I played. Maybe I'll come back to finish it one day.

I had to start to tackle my list of "bad games" with this notorious "collection".

I had already played this years ago with my best friend. We were binging AVGN episodes and decided to actually try some of the games. We had a blast and I particularly remember Micro Mike as the "best" of the worst.

This game (collection) is hilarious. It's so fucking terrible. Many games are variations of each other, like the many shitty platformers with the weird jump or the bad shmups with enemies that sometimes just don't show up.
Crazy Shuffle, Micro Mike, Star Evil... some games genuinely make me laugh. I guess it wouldn't be funny if I paid $200.

I'll give it 1 star just for the laughs... and for cheetahmen's theme song.

What can I say...
After watching many South Park episodes on tik tok this thing seemed kind of fun. Unlike Wall Kickers this game was not good at all.
I could barely play it, thanks to being bombarded with ads. I didn't even need to finish a level for an ad to appear; there's banner ads while you play PLUS full unskipable mid-level short video ads, then, as the cherry on top, your reward for finishing a level is a good old full minute ad.

idk man, even if the ads weren't there the game is still bad. You just swipe left and right choosing the right path, and it's always extremely obvious, like braindead stuff that you give a toddler so they shut up. It's a template that you see on the same ads that interrupt this game all the time.
Just play Subway Surfers or Temple Run if you want an endless runner time waster I guess.

Well I gave Doodle God a 1 star... and this is worse than that game. Quantity does not mean quality. And the website's domain is .fun... yeah right.

wow this was fucking terrible. It's the same exact template from that AEW game.

I don't know what was I expecting honestly, that artstyle just makes a bad first impression. I guess I just expected the game to NOT be the same idle game just with another IP.

btw why all of these games take ages to load???

After seeing way too many tik tok videos with this game in the background, I decided to give it a try. Why not? It looked fun.

Great time waster. The game is really polished and, as far as I saw, it's free from the common mobile bullshit; for example there were 0 ads interrupting each of my attempts.

It also had a raccoon skin, so extra points for that. Too bad every cosmetic is paid dlc.

Years ago, when I went to get my physical version of this game the store just gave me a steelbook copy instead of a standard one.
Idk if it's because of that anecdote or maybe it's because I'm latino and it's in my blood to like every KOF, but I have a soft spot for this game.

This kof is not in the conversation of the best ones in the franchise, but I think it's... pretty good.
Yes, I know the graphics are um... not the best.
Yes, I know the character designs are... also not the best (look at Terry...)
Yes, it doesn't have the style of 13 or 2002um (or the early KOFs)
Yes, gameplaywise it's not 98um, 2002um or 13.
And yes, KOF 15 existing makes most people question why would you want to go back to 14.

14 takes from 98um, 2002um and 13, while adding some small changes to the kof formula (like the wall splat). At a glance it's like a simplified and less execution demanding kof 13.

15 is definitely the more refined version (like ultimate to sm4sh) and also way better looking, but for some reason I feel there's some charm to what could be considered a "transition game". Testing the waters of what a 3d (or 2.5d) KOF could be, trying out new character design ideas and even checking if it's worth continuing to make new KOF fighting games.

The roster of new characters is fkn weird. It includes shitty new protagonist Shunei, that for some reason is in the next game, and his friend sleepy boy who is the worst character in the franchise (worse than Bao and the Kyo clones). There's also team south america (more like team Brazil lmao) which includes a Brazilian ninja, a boxer with a cyber arm and a girl with a toucan. None of them came back in the next game. Then there's 3 pachinko characters and wtf is Xanadu????
There were some great new additions though, like King of Dinasours, Mian, Najd, Antonov... and adding someone from samsho is such a good idea. It feels like the philosophy when considering new challengers was that of quantity over quality, so it's understandable that some of them were duds. I mean it introduces 22 fighters to kof and of those 16 were all-new designs debuting in this game.
It's unlikely that most of the duds return in future kofs and I'm pretty sure that Love heart and Mui Mui can't come back ever. I think that alone can be a reason to come back to this game, just like Hwa Jai in 13 or the sports team in 98.

Apart from the weird designs and characters, and the bad graphics, there's not much wrong with this game. The gameplay is good (the less demanding execution is good for a KOF casual like me) and it maintains 60fps. The presentation is pretty bland but the ost is great as always. The online is trash, and it died extremely quickly but you can probably coordinate with other players online, just like I have been doing when I get the itch to go back.
If you liked 15 you'll probably like 14. I can understand the bad reactions at the time, since this had to follow 13, a gorgeous game, but give it a chance if you can.

I've been in a GB yugioh games mood lately and, having never played this game before, I was surprised with how much fun I had playing this.

I suppose I should call this a spin-off, although this early into the franchise there was still some experimentation.

Monster Capsule GB is a weird mix of various elements from the manga:
-It uses monster capsules, but it doesn't follow it's mechanics from the manga (the Mokuba duels). It's more of an adaptation, taking some concepts and doing something different. It's also kind of a follow up to the ps1 game (at least the battle part), with simplified terrain and limited movement.
-Storywise, it's an alternate follow up to the Death-T, where after Kaiba got exodia'd he mysteriously came back to challenge Yugi to a Monster Capsule tournament. Characters from Duelist Kingdom appear and there's no explanation on how they know Yugi. The capsule roster includes monsters from the card game in addition to the original capsule monsters.
-The game also takes inspiration from the Monster World arc (that's where the cover art comes from). In each floor, instead of a boss fight you participate in a DnD session against a DM (dark master). There are 5 of these "campaigns" and their objectives vary from helping a dragon evolve, to preventing your monster being sacrificed to the great moth, to escaping hell. Gameplaywise these sections translate to more traditional rpg exploration, with fetch quests, puzzle solving and random encounters.

The result of all of this amalgamation of ideas is a monster collecting rpg with tactical rpg battle mechanics and table-top rpg-inspired exploration sections.
The combination works well, and in my opinion this is the best game at capturing the original feel of the manga. The monster world sections are the best part of the game, even though the last one is really long and frustrating, with a crazy strong final boss (the blue eyes fusion).

I can't give this game more than 4stars though, even if I really enjoyed it.
-It's grindy, and you get minimal exp most of the time. Evolution exists, but it resets the lvl back to lvl1. Sure you get more base stats, but most of the time it's not worth it since every level takes the same amount of exp (100 per level). The exp you get is calculated with the highest leveled monster you use in battle, so lower lvl monsters are deadweight. This also means that changing the monsters that you use will result in more grinding, but you cannot use your best monster to help since that will mean you get less exp...
-It's slow, setting the text to fast helps when you are in battles but it doesn't work outside of them. You can't run in the Monster World sections, and if you have bad luck the random encounters will be constant.
-Every monster can only move 1 space each turn, and even though you can bring 4 to battle, only 1 can move/act every turn.
-It has permadeath, and through most of the game you and your opponents die in 2-3 hits if there's no level advantage.
-Most of the time your hit rate will be about 70-80%. You (and most importantly your enemy) can crit if you roll from 1 to 9, super crit if you get a 00, and hit yourself if you get 95-99. All of this means you can get absolutely fucked by the rng, so prepare to savescum if you don't want to lose your best units to a random encounter (this is at it's worst in the final levels of hell).

This game is filled with "old school" rpg stuff and can get really frustrating at times. The start of the game is painful as you don't have many options and you level up so slowly. Once you get past the slow start it's not that bad... until the final sections of the game. Literally hell. Kaiba's world is the size of 3 "campaigns" with enemies that get worse and worse as you try to escape hell. The "final 4" ends in a crazy difficulty spike, with the blue eyes being way stronger than anything else in the game at that point.

My final story team was:
Winged Dragon (Guardian of the Fortress), the carry for most of the game, he only fell off at the end.
Dark Magician, he carried me in hell and killed ultimate blue eyes in a 1 on 1.
Great moth, literally deadweight, at the end of the game I had only reached the 3rd stage (of 5).
And Joey.

Overall, if you like yugioh and can stomach classic rpgs, or if you like monster collecting games, I recommend Monster Capsule GB. It's not as clunky as NES rpgs and I like how the story progresses. The DnD sections are great and the dice being visible every roll is a nice touch.

Since I'm crazy, not only did I beat the main story, I won against every opponent in the post game, built an extremely op team and I even got the Yugi capsule (though I wasn't crazy enough to grind him to lvl 50, the max level, so he could evolve into Dark Yugi).
I also completed the game on retroachievements. It was fun and made me go towards some secret stuff I wouldn't have done normally.

Short and sweet.

It's missing the final part of the puzzle; the copy abilities from adventure, but everything else is here.

Really charming, no wonder it spawned such a successful franchise. Also the music is fantastic.

In this game Kirby can't float on his own so he dies when falling on the edges of the map.

I played this on my phone to try to come close to the original experience with the motion controls. Man this game gets frustrating quick, but it's so cute and it's really polished.

I won't finish it as I can't take a whole game with these controls.

Well nevermind, we actually managed to finish this game. Looks like the offline ps plus trick lasted for 2 weeks instead of 1.

I don't think that playing the last 2 chapters changes our score. There were some really cool set pieces, particularly at the last chapter, but that ending... idk. It kinda felt rushed, which is ironic since we thought the game dragged on a little too much.

Oh also, we got the platinum trophy yay

This review contains spoilers

If you don't believe I'm crazy I've completed this. Sure I didn't beat every duelist 100 times or obtained every card, but I did beat every duelist at least 5 times(including Dark Yugi) and saw the credits.
What's crazier is that this game was very successful, with tournaments where actual Japanese people played against each other. On this game. Yes that did indeed happen.

One look at this game's gameplay loop will make you say: "wtf??? How could this spawn a successful series of sequels and help the popularity of the manga and eventual physical card game?? It's extremely grindy and most of the time the game consists of play big number and win. " ...well that's a little specific but you would be right.

You can only play one card each turn and it's extremely limiting. It leads to big number = win; if you have a card with high stats and your opponent doesn't you'll win unless they have Raigeki or Black hole, and even those magic cards leave you vulnerable; remember, you can only play one card per turn. Only swords of revealing light can help you stall so you can top deck a monster with a big enough number. Good luck getting it though, as you need to grind 60 matches against the CPU... 60 sloooooow matches.

Fusions exist but unlike Forbidden Memories you can't fuse multiple cards then play the result on the same turn. To fuse you play a monster on top of another already in play. Also most fusions that are easily available to you suck ass.

Magic cards, like field spells or equips, exist but if you play Sogen you won't have a line of defense against an opponent's Summoned Demon or whatever. "Field spells" are powerful here because, unlike in the real card game, they give a 30% boost to atk and def. Equips are pretty good too, too bad you need a monster on the field already, and that means it needs to survive a turn...

You can't just leave a monster on attack position and not attack. Even if it would be advantageous, like for example: you have a Summoned Demon and your opponent has 2 Black Magicians; both have 2500 atk but you don't want to lose your monster...well too bad, your only other option is to leave it at defense mode, even if it's lower def stat (1200) will mean that you'll lose next turn.

To the game's credit it feels exactly like the very early Magic and Wizard duels in the manga... well except some weird stuff like elements and types of magic having weaknesses and resistances (that gets added in the sequel).

It's soundtrack is great (it does get repetitive... but that's inevitable thanks to the required grinding).

The art is also great, specially how it recreates manga panels. Monster design will get better on the sequels and the OCG but the spritework is still great.

...
The Yugioh manga was extremely popular and it feels like fans would eat up any adaptation of the card game. Honestly, same lmao. Looking back at the firsts sets, the actual physical card game was very lame and slow, and if you thought about it for a moment, the manga duels were also weird, convoluted and stupid at times, at least before Battle City. But it didn't matter as it was cool as fuck.
Actually playing this game, either against the CPU or against another crazy human player, feels slow and lame... but the music and art is cool and you can collect the cards that you see on the manga!

If it wasn't apparent from this review I really like yugioh. The manga is great, even at the start when it's just Dark Yugi killing criminals through shadow games. It's one of those IPs that I just like everything about it and yes, I play the modern card game to this day.
I enjoyed my time with this game thanks to being a fan, and having a strong resilience to outdated game mechanics. If you don't fulfill those 2 conditions don't play this game. It's not good. If you are curious play Dark Duel Stories or Forbidden Memories idk.
