This is when The Legend of Zelda really comes forward with its own identity! The dungeons, the controls, the puzzles, and the boss fights are all amazingly fun in their own right. But it’s also when the world of Hyrule becomes a living place rather than a series of cryptic challenges. A must play if you have not played it already!

This is my favorite game of 2023, and Peppino Spaghetti is my favorite video game character of said year! Seeing him smash, dash, and suplex his way through the titular tower to save his restaurant while being an absolutely anxious wreck makes him strangely empathetic. Also, the visual design is delightfully weird, the platforming is easy to learn and hard to master, the timed final moments of every level makes stressed in a positive way, the music is spectacular, and the boss fights are unique and challenging at the same time! This is a must buy game!

This is an improvement to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in every way! If it were simply that game and more of it, that would have been enough! But what Hidemaro Fujibayashi did was expand upon the abilities that Link can accomplish so that players are more free to experiment and let their creative juices flow! Also, the story is way more impactful and nearly brought a tear to my eye at the final cutscene (pun semi-intentional). The temples are more fleshed out, the sky islands and depths add an extra layer of challenge, and the bosses pack a total punch, especially dragon vs. dragon final boss with Zelda and Ganondorf! A must buy for any Switch owner!

It’s simply a showcase of what the DualSense controller is capable of, but it’s definitely a fun showcase of the DualSense controller is capable of. Astro is cute, the graphics are excellent, and it actually had a boss fight at the end that caught me by surprise and took me a few tries to beat. I had a good time, but it’s lack of substance makes this game not something I would replay any time soon.

While the comedic dialogue mostly fell flat on its face, Hi-Fi Rush is more than makes up for by everything else! The platforming, the colorful graphics, the core gameplay loop of beating your enemies in timing to the background music, and the unique boss fights! You get to fight Roquefort, who is a robot werewolf, that alone makes this game a must buy! One last thing to note is that I like to thank Hi-Fi Rush for introducing me to The Prodigy’s Invaders Must Die in the lead up to the fight with Roquefort.

While Sonic Mania was a game that is a celebration of 2D Sonic, this is just another 2D Sonic. While the story have some cute moments and it’s nice to play as Amy, none of the game really stands out as exceptional. But if there was one thing that will keep me from returning to this game, it’s the final boss fight! Trying to hit Dr. Eggman’s robot with the missiles was alright the first two times, it took multiple attempts until I read a YouTube comment that told me that I have to look at the background to look for its location, and it was a nasty surprise to learn that it was just the first phase, before I inevitably died and the irritation began anew! When I finally beat him, I thought to myself, “Finally!” not “That was fun!”, which is definitely not what I want from a 2D Sonic game.

Just when I thought 2D Mario games were ran dry of ideas, Super Mario Bros Wonder proved me wrong in an amazing way. The upgraded art style is beautiful, the new power ups are creative, and the control is just as sublime as ever! Plus, I think Nintendo took lessons from Rayman Legends and made some rhythm based levels that is extraordinarily satisfying to get the timing down, especially in the final boss fight with Bowser! A must buy if you have a Switch!
