It's undeniably fun and another example of fine craftsmanship, but decades of refining the 2D Mario formula have almost boxed Nintendo in, driving them to throw stuff at the wall for the sake of novelty.

my wife pia in live2d was all i needed for this to be goty
still the best girl of all time 14 years later

I think mechanically this game is superior to the first in every way. Everything is just more polished. Puzzles make more sense and its no longer just random trial and error to solve these somniums. There's a more logical pattern now.

The story is batshit insane in simultaneously stupid and fun ways. Like the game straight up basically lies and gaslights the player and you're just supposed to deal with it. Wouldn't say the story is better than the first because of that plot twist. It's genuinely hard to wrap your head around it. The final act is pretty fun with basically an avengers assemble moment. All the new characters are great and given a lot more depth than the first game.

It's funny that basically my complaints for the first game have been flipped for this one. This time the story is hit or miss while the gameplay is a huge improvement

Turns out, I like this more than I remember, but less than I hoped. An odd feeling!

Just let me enjoy my admittedly flawed comfort food.

I really don't understand why people like this. The best I can say is that Maya's return was great, it had cool concepts with the spirit channeling and some cool twists, but the execution was very poorly done. Rayfa was also an interesting character but I wish she was done better and Nayhuta was both boring and frustrating.

The pun names are bad and felt lazy, and it does a very poor job with worldbuilding and developing a culture by leaning on puns and only going as far as the country's government and religion and failing to develop on anything further, and the way Phoenix acted as a tourist was awful to watch.

Like Dual Destinies, it also undid a lot of AA4 and that's very apparent with Trucy and Apollo, and it fails as a supposed ending to Apollo's character arc by introducing a backstory out of nowhere only during the final case. Athena is also treated as incompetent as both a lawyer and a psychologist and it was just frustrating. It had most of the same problems as DD and I don't quite get why DD is so hated but SoJ is so loved.

I will give it credit though for having a decent system character but it had a weird issue where the character themselves were fine, but everyone around them was just awful with calling them personalities and forcing them to switch. Which I guess is accurate to real life tbf but Athena as a psychologist I'd hope would know better.

I don't normally like to rag on games this much but I really can't understand why people like it.

10/10 but the final area made my brain short circuit

It's longer than the average VN, the choice system is not the best, and parts of the game could as well not be there and it won't be a total loss, but I love this game because the things that do well, are very awesome.

A nice dark-fantasy turn for the series, some interesting ideas for post-game/New Game+. Unfortunately ruined all balance by allowing you to grind between missions. Didn't really love the more stoic and frigid tone, either.

Shouzou Kaga aint got SHIT on that super sad™️ character death scene that had like 40 seconds of focus on said dying character's balloon tits. truly the first engaging fire emblem game.

Good gameplay doesn't make up for the quality of the writing.

this game changed shu takumi for the better. writing was so goofy but so good. luke is forklift certified.

This would be a 8 but it gets extra 2 points for not being three houses

Neat story with raw moments nothing rly offensive in it the real draw is the gameplay, played on maddening and a had a well, engaging time this is just the best series has ever balanced the hardest difficulty
the music is fire both original tracks and remixes, the supports are all mostly fun to read, the cast is likeable this is something that will grow on me as time goes as i replay it not because i need 325235 playthroughs to get a full picture but because i actually want to play this,
3rd edit: changed my mind this is the best game ever

in spite of being passable-to-okay at best in nearly every other aspect, this game's character writing is so unbelievably tight that i've thought about several of the characters on a regular basis for the past three years or so.

i think if these same characters were in just some dysfunctional high school setting it would be one of my favorite things ever. like i want fire emblem: euphoria
