The formula is well overplayed now but the open world of Far Cry 3 was great for its time. The gameplay is solid and the story intriguing (carried largely by Vaas). Unfortunately the game's high quality dies with him as the second island turns into a slog in both gameplay and narrative terms.

Gameplay-wise it's a pretty standard shooter, though quite flashy and certainly with a nicer backdrop than 99% of other games coming out at the time. Elizabeth is obviously the standout part of the game and clearly it was well worth the effort as she is one of the best "companions" in any game to date.
Story-wise there is little that needs to be said as most already know how reliant the ending is on vagueness and minimal player examination to deliver its twist. Also, thanks Ken for taking the opportunity of the final DLC to retroactively make the first game worse as well.

The game may have been an internal disaster for Konami and may be missing large parts of important content. However, playing around in the open world with the stealth and combat mechanics is probably the best time you can have in a video game.
